ITNES I - An Epoch of Change

well china calls us Yeew Rrup, so were allowed to mess with your names just as well :)

Forever to sleep
It happened early in the morning of a Sunday. The guards knocked on Erezius work room door. No answer came. They knew that last night Erezius stayed in his work room to work more of a strategy to destroy the Solists in Hibernia. As they continued to work the queen, Amadara, came to the room as well looking for Erezius. As they openned the door and entered Amadara went with them. And than her scream was heard.

King Erezius died at the age of 42. Most likely while being asleep. He felt no pain. So it was believed. The queen stayed alone in his room for the next hour, the guards kept the news a secret. The day after the news begun to spread out of the northern palace. The King was dead, his older son would be the most likely heir to the throne. But problem never ceased to come...

"I will not rule. I cannot. I'm not a leader, or a man of war mother. I am a man of science, this is my call of life. Not kingship but Knowledge." Dori said to his confused mother.
"But Dori. You must. Your father have died and you are the next in line to rule. Your young brother may be old enough, and wise enough, but we both know he his reckless. He already wants to lead the attack on the Solists for killing his father. He wants to kill every single Solist in the world. We cannot let him rule." She answered.
"Than you should rule. It is not a new thing for a woman to lead the country. I will help as much as I can but I..." Suddenly his mother stopped him, looked into his eyes, and said...
"Dori. You are perfect to rule. You are a good wise man. One of the smartest people in Nortugal, and probably in the whole world. You father taught you well of how to lead. You have it in you like every king before you. Your father knew you became a scientists and an inventor when you grew and yet he did not begun to teach your brother of how to rule. You are 26 years old. Your brother is 19. He won't rule, he will break our kingdom by his hatred and anger to the Solists. He is even more of a aggressive atheist than your father have ever been. And you. You are perfect for this. You have learned well, you are smart, you know people from the richer families of Nortugal. You have it in you, like your father had it before you. You inherited his wise side, your brother his angry side. You must and you will lead Nortugal to greatness. Erezius before he died told me you have already begun to devise a plan to defeat the Solist before they landed in Lisbon. I know of your plans even while they were secrets. I am your mother, I know you will lead well, I will help you as much as I can as well. But you must lead."
Ashamed a little, Dori looked into her eyes with small tears.. "Fine. I'll sleep about it tonight. Tomorrows either me or my brother will be crowned as king of Nortugal. I will of course continue to dedicate most of my time for inventing, but I guess I could help Nortugal in that way as well. Please mother, if I choose not to lead, teach my brother all my father knew."
"Tomorrows than you will be the king of Nortugal. Dori the Inventor. I am proud to call you my prince, my son."
"Mother, wait until tomorrow. I have yet to decide."
"The decision was when you were five my dear Dori. Follow your two calls, one to lead and one to invent. Invent us a way to lead perhaps. I see great future for you my son."
"Fine mother. Now it is late at night, let me have time to think."

...

ooc- not really sure about their ages... and he actually died of a heart attack because of the stress that is on him at such an old age for the times.

Is it really a wise idea to have your leader die in the middle of a war?
It is rarely a singular country leader whose presence makes a huge difference in a war, unless the leader is superhuman who does the job of 10 generals (Napoleon-style). Usually the generals lead the war, and if they don't all collapse at the same time, he should be just fine.

well... Thats why i also developed my country into a bearocratic monarchy.. so it could be stable for two days without a king...

My leaders do that!!! WOOT!!!

Yea, I think most NESers think their leader does that. I've never stopped wondering why mods don't mind that kind of thinking, they actually support it as "innovative". I myself would never do that, instead I try to find challenges for players elsewhere when modding, such as from interresting diplomatic situations. Do join my new NES and feel the difference! Wow it sure is easy to change the topic into shameless self-promotion. Yeaaah... I'll be shutting up now.

My leaders do that!!! WOOT!!!

Not in this particular NES, actually. After the initial reforms things have been going smoothly and the Ghana's involvement is not really needed at present. The most "leader-driven" nation right now is, in all probability, Nordrike.

das, would you allow the clockwork man invention? (if anyone saw rise of legends, it a leonardo de vinvi idea)

btw if the pm's and science questions are getting annoying do tell :p.

Well thats good to know. Finally an Empire that will outlast the creator....

i meant socially and politically, having your king die will lead to instability, no? That's not counting the possibility of a civil war ;)

Waking up from a sleepless night

He couldn't sleep for a mere second.
He couldn't shut his eyes.
His father died last morning.
And now he's bounded by new ties.

A kingdom with no leader.
Calls for him this day.
it's him or a young madman.
He know he can't delay.

A king he will be soon.
but never wanted to be.
And now with the sun rising.
He must lead the army.

He must lead his kingdom.
His people wait for him.
He gave up on his love for science.
For a ruler ship that is so dim.

That was the first time he wrote (ooc: hence the suckiness of this song). And most likely the last (ooc: yeah yeah, don't run to the hills). But in his writings he expressed his feeling. He knew he could continue to invent but he now had to give his body and heart to his people, to lead them in this dark times into a bright future. He had to "invent" a strategy to destroy the Solist navy while keeping safe. It would be hard but he will use the aid of the first general his father appointed.

General Zoita was a man of a family that did not originated from Nortugal. They were from the far east and hidden their true identity. They became atheist when they first came to Nortugal some thirteen years ago and quickly showed their ability to device magnificent military plans. Erezius befriended with them and soon brought the leader of their family, a wise warrior into becoming the first general of his army on his side. When Erezius died The queen Amadara invited Zoita to their house for the sad day. At night when she spoke with Dori he stood behind the door listening to the poor man that had to become a king against his will. He knew Dori would make a great leader for he was a fair and good man. Also a smart man. A genius. When Dori called for him in the morning of the next day Zoita knew why he called. He will be meeting the future king of Nortugal, which needed him...

"Welcome, come inside Zoita."
"Yes my prince, why have you called me?"
"I need your help. I don't know how to be a king."
"It's easy. First understand. You are a king. Everyone in this country must bow to you."
"Bow? but you bow before gods and I am no god."
"You bow before kings as well.." when he finished the sentence Zoita went on his knees and bowed before Dori. "See? Easy."
"It feels all wrong."
"After the crowning it won't. Once the crown of Nortugal will be on your head, I think the spirit of my good old friend will enter you and you will know what to do. Now come the crowning is prepared. We only are waiting for you. Your mother is wise, she knows you. She knew you will make the right choice. And don't worry. I know what you think you are giving up. I promise to help as much as possible so you could continue with your love. Inventing things. Who knows you may win the war for us with some crazy machines."
"Crazy machines? I do not invent crazy machines, only working ones." Dori answered back, smiling. "Thank you Zoita. I understand why my father loved you so much and why he considered you such a good friend. You are one."
"All thanks to your father. He made me what I am today. Now let us go, there is a crown waiting for you"

i meant socially and politically, having your king die will lead to instability, no? That's not counting the possibility of a civil war ;)

I think that a king dying out of natural causes very rarely causes instability if the society is alreadys stable. Its not like the people are going all "YAY the king is dead its time for the traditional civil war" u know.. death of a king might give them a chance to rebel or cause social and political instability, but they still need a motive to do so :p

Unless of course, your smart enough to have a named and approved chain of succession sorted out beforehand . Some light assasinations might be necessary of course, but when is that not the case...

das, would you allow the clockwork man invention? (if anyone saw rise of legends, it a leonardo de vinvi idea)

btw if the pm's and science questions are getting annoying do tell :p.

I played that game. How did those things walk on such a small base? More importantly, how did they think with clockwork brains?

I can very well picture this NES going steampunk.

nah, das said no to clockwork man. Well I can understand no brains... but moving robots top dig and work is still nice :p

The sun may rise, but that is not always good news

The sun has risen over Nortugal about 5 hours ago. An hour ago Dori and Zoita reached the crown room. A minute ago a coronation ceremony ended. Dori was no more.

"All hail King Dorius! King of Nortugal! Long live the King". The general shouted in the halls. As the small crowd cheered. Outside of the northern palace the crowd heard this and was cheering, more quietly. They were afraid. Ever since the sun shined some two or three years ago the people of the sun, or so they call themselves, the Solists, landed on Hibernia and begun the invasion of Nortugal. For a whole year they advanced deeper and deeper. But the people knew they could not allow that. There was no single official soldier, except for the king's guards in all of Hibernia. And yet the invasion was put to halt. The people, numbering the thousands, took up weapons and fought viciously against the invaders for they knew that if they loose, they loose everything. From their lives to their freedoms. From their homelands to their empire. From their houses to their past. All will be for naught. And that could not happen. They all, all that could lift a fighting tool, risen and fought. Those that couldn't either stayed in their homes, not working for the Solists or left to the north or to the colonies. None sides with the Solists except for some unknown Solist communities that lived inside for Nortugal for years. The Nortuguese may not have liked them, yet unlike Gaul, they did not came slaughtering all those with different believes. And so as the sun shined another attack came from the Solist armies. And another. But the people stopped them. The Solists would not win this day. And now Nortugal would come back, and destroy those that have invaded it. The floating fortress would not fall so easily, and the Nortuguese will fight until victory shall be theirs, or death.

Back in the crown room Dorius was left alone with his mother and first general. He hid his tears. But those were not tears of sadnes. After wearing the crown Dorius felt better, encouraged. With the help of Zoita he could quickly take over Hibernia back from the Solists and continue his work as an inventor. He already told his mother and Zoita he will give them both many rights to control when he is busy in his own work room, just like his father before him he did not felt he must take the whole power of Nortugal to his hands. But unlike his father he will not give the power to some puny idiotic bureaucrats. He would give it to those he could trust. Zoita and his mother. They were both wise and able. They were the once that would teach him to rule even. They knew the job, and now before they grow old and die as well, he must learn to rule. He also had to make sure he leaves an heir. He didn't have one, he was not even married. He never loved a woman; he never even loved a man. He was always in love with his books and knowledge. Yet now his mother reminded him that in order to continue their royal line, one that have been said to last ever since the first king of Lusitania. But King Dorius could not so easily do that. He had another idea in mind. He wanted no wife or children of his own. Deep inside is mother knew it. His heir will have to be from another branch of the family. A branch that only he, his mother and his father knew about... But that is for the future. As for now. He had to rule. He had a war to win. And he to find an inventive way to win it.

Soon it will be revealed. His and Zoita's plan to defeat the Solists in Hibernia. Soon he will continue his father's greatness. Soon victory shall come.

ooc: All will be seen in the next episode of Moon and Sun, the soap opera TV show ;)
