Its just like the good ol days again!

Yeah, I was one of those guys who had been playing Civ II ToT for quite some time (but was consternated as to the lack of editor or program for making the animated .spr files), and bought Civ III when it first came out..... ALthough I didn't have the internet back then. I remember being frustrated by the numerous bugs in the game, and I eventually shelved it after playing it for a couple of weeks....

Then Civ III PTW came out, and I found out that the editor actually WORKED for once, so I started working on my own mod, which was essentially the precursor of the Tweaked Out Civ 3 Conquests mod. It was there that I learned the basics of adding resources and such, as well as adding/editing civilopedia entries and the Civ III PCX format (i.e. with the last two colors in the pallette being transparent). Due to the fact that my internet access on the ship I was stationed on was HORRIBLE, I had not discovered this community, and I figured out all of that stuff on my own.....

Then Civ III Conquests come out, and I really started modding, and even figured out how to add (but not edit or create) units, and as I found that I needed some units for my mod (Tweaked Out) that weren't in the Civ III COnquests folders or such, I went to CivilizaionIII.com, and followed the link to this site, and went on a unit downloading spree, and soon after, I registered and uploaded my first mod. I then saw some of Kinboat's and Aaglo's excellent fantasy units, and the idea for the Final Fantasy Mod was born.... and now, after 2 years of work, the mod nears completion, and along the way I learned how to make wonder graphics in Bryce, as well as make units using Poser 5, Bryce, and even C&P, and also how to make Leaderheads.

So, even though I may have only registered two years ago, I've been Civving for about 6.

i remember, loooooong before i regestered here, playing civ 2 ToT till 3am with my uncles and their mates.. and i was like 7 at the time..

but regarding here, i'm relatively new, and only a lurker for a year before i registered.

Yeah, I know what you mean.... One of my buddies in the Navy worked night shift at the AF TV station in the Yokosuka Navy base.... Him, one of my other good friends, and I would go over there and we'd hook our computers up (Networking equipment in Japan is dirt cheap... You can get an ultra-high speed 5-port router for around $45, and LAN cables are only $.98), and play until the cows came home on weekends. We'd usually play either the Sci-fi, Fantasy, or Original games, and we'd have a blast.

cheers stormie

me and my oldest uncle always wanted to play the scifi version (me an alien race and my uncle a human race), and my youngest uncle (still 6-7 years older than me) always played fantasy as elves. i always played as stygeans in the fantasy version, and the eldet uncle played as humans... goo times... but now my computer cant play ToT... it wont work...

all this makes me with to have the +25% vs cavalry etc... and the multiple world feature..

nope, none for PS. i have the PS version.. walking pyramids (ie the units) and the controlly were as awkward....
nut i demand source code so we can have my glorious dream of multi-story carparks maps.. and unit types and bonuses (cavalry, infantry etc..)

In the Fantasy games, my friend Olavesson almost always managed to grab the Merfolk (so that he could have undisputed control of the oceans and land), and my friend John usually managed to snag the Buteos (undisputed control of the skies and land) before I could (which ticked me off), leaving me with a choice of the Stygians (which I didn't like), Elves (lame), Infidels (lamer), Humans (equally as lame as the Infidels), the Goblins (which, again, I didn't care for), etc, so I ended up picking the Elves, and of course I'd lose, due to the fact that I had to compete with every other faction for control of the land, and all of the elven units being slow (unlike the Buteos 2 movement settlers).

The Sci-fi game was a different matter, though.... I'd always pick a human faction, and I'd almost always be the first to get the the other planets, and even when I wasn't the first to get to the planets, I was able to spam enough settlers to make up the difference..... One thing I hated about the Sci-fi version: The three most powerful units in the game were only available to the Barbs, and in the late game, they'd ALWAYS capute at least 2 AI cities, and start spamming about 20 of these monsters every turn, while I was using my secondary production cities (the most productive were all working on spaceship parts) to pump out as many of the best units available to the non-barb factions, and I'd have about 10X as many available attack units as the barbs, but I'd still not make any headway due to the fact that it would take an entire stack to take down 1 or 2 of these uber barb units..... If I'd have had an army or two (a la Civ III), I'd have weakened/killed as many of their units as I could, then used the armies to deliver the coup de grace to their unit spamming cities.

One advantage to Civ II, though, is that there is only 1 unit needed for working and settling, and it only costs 1 pop point.... When I played a game with John on the third highest difficulty setting about 6 months back. After all the experience I had with playing Civ III, I was able to take my somewhat disadvantaged start (I was on a somewhat small peninsula hanging off the N pole), and within about 100 turns, build a massive civilization colonizing all but 2 settlable spots on the N pole land masses (there were two other medium to large peninsulas), as well as several nearby islands, as well as spring up to being the most advanced faction in the world, while my friend got dog-piled by the AI, and quit, despite my declaring war on all the AIs near me that were attacking him (I kicked a whole lot of butt and took a few names before he succumbed to their attacks, though).

You forgot about Kryten...
I can't believe I forgot about Kryten! Then again, I can: I always got the K-gods mixed up.

Never did play ToT, I was modding in my usual crappy offhand manner with Civ2 Multiplayer Gold and I was having so much fun that I didn't even bother buying Civ3 Vanilla! I got it for a gift later on, and I remember being secretly annoyed because I didn't want to play Civ3. Oh well, can't stop "progress." ;)

I don't think I started modding Civ3 until the last patch for Vanilla came out. I remember worrying about getting PtW because I thought if I did, I'd have to start my personal mod all over again! But it was probably for the best...

I modded the fantasy game, remade the Buteos and Merfolk into Dwarves and Dark Elves.

Several people have returned after having decided that Civ4 isn't all that it was cracked up to be.

We have some new artists producing work and some of the old ones have gotten even better. Some new and great scenarios have been added to the rolls. All of this stimulates interest.

Maybe the hard core is even harder. :)

I agree with Seven-Ronin. Except wtfiuwhh?? "7ronin"???

The hard-cores have definitely gotten more hardcore. I've noticed the unit graphics are definitely improving.

Check the unit subforum and the units definitely have a better look. It's the end-ovan-era... The Civ Market is turning bullish...

I can't believe there was a version of Civ for the Playstation. I remember when the original Civ came out, and I played it obsessively. I never saw Civ II because I gave up computer games for many years.

Even the weaker units posted on the boards these days are far superior to the best units posted in the early days of unit making. People just hadn't worked out the best ways to make them back then.

I have a copy of the orginal civ for the Super Nintendo. I love and cherish it. Without it, there would be no Goldflash.

I can't remember anything of the "old days".
1: Because I registered immediately after I found the site, so I'm not older than my join date;
2: Because at one week after joining I went to Italy and stayed there 2 months, with no Internet acces. Then I went to Greece for 2 weeks, same, no Internet. So I started posting in September...
And I am about to lose interest in CFC again (I'm too busy with my own forum, and posting here seems pointless)... Maybe if the forum (Civ3 C&C) is really going back to life I might come back here and post again. And maybe start working on the scenario I'm dreaming to make. I would absolutely LOVE to have my own scen, and I just decided I was going to make a Fall of Byzantium scenario when Yoda Power posted his preview for his own one (which is better than I could probably make it). I looked at his scen, tested it, and now I'm on the credit list for testing!

Well, I have to do something for your mod/s for the credit list to make me happy! Otherwise it's just like lying myself.
However, you should be on my credit list for anything I make, because you.... know what. I'm using it for Vanilla.

i think that so long as the core modders/creators are still cranking out new stuff, there'll be a good showing for civ3. after all, civ3 and civ4 are really different games and i think this adds to the allure of civ3.

sure, some of the old school creators are long gone. however, if you asked me last summer (or thereabouts) how i thought civ3 would be doing come summer '06, i'd have likely said that it'd be like the civ2 forums are (tumble-weed central). hell, i thought civ3 would've been in my own rear view mirror as well w/ an Oct '05 civ4 relase date and all. the extreme disappointment which was civ4 has actually bolstered my affection for civ3.

considering all of that, it is indeed nice to see the sustained interest in civ3. and i also think that at this point that the stuff being created and posted on the civ3 forums is BY FAR superior to anything that was ever created for civ3. iow, the overall quality of civ3 stuff is really at an all-time high imo.
