Its just like the good ol days again!

I think Vanilla C&C would be too scary... I heard that it took way too long for the "Vanilla" people to go so far as to add units! *shudders*

All I remember about the gold ol' days when I joined up was that there were three or four "K-gods" posting quite regularly, like Kal-El, Kinboat, Kindred72 (did I forget any of them)? I always got them mixed up anyways. Plus Wyrmshadow was pissing people off and threatening to go elsewhere, and Xen made sure everybody knew that he knew everything about the Romans. Funny times, those. And I think I have an unused account that I signed up for back in the Civ2 days but forgot the password for, so I might be more geriatric than I look!

You forgot about Kryten... 'who is currently working on a project'

There is nothing to hear, its just in Kryten`s sig, and since he is no longer here, he cannot update it ;)
We could ask a mod to change it. :D

^
Not really - the mods did it on several ocasions; quite a few ppl woke up with their sig a little bit modified. :D Mostly just removing Quote tags from sigs though.

I've never noticed this... Oh well... For all we know, Kryten could still be working on a "project". Infact, he could be so into his project, that he still hasn't had time to come back here :crazyeye:

Ah yes, those were the days... :D

There was a vanilla C&C, although I wasn't around to see it. When I showed up, everyone was talking about this newfangled "Conquests" on the horizon that was going to make our lives easier.

I got my start fooling around with the unit pic file on Civ2. Check out my join date.
That "you" of mine was "anyone who's posted in this thread", which you hadn't, I know I'm not the only grandpa around. ;)

Modding vanilla was quite a drag, IIRC you had to use the pirated editor, because they hadn't bothered to add the "add/rename/delete" buttons to it.

I miss Kryten, he was a witty old chap. :(

Oh, and the first C&C I did was for Civilization. Yes, that game without the number after it...:wow: There was a file called civedit.exe, I gave myself tanks with ADM 99/99/99, boy, did I win those games easily? And no, the fun didn't last very long with that particular modding experiment... ;)

HA!!! I can beat that for being a pansy. I got a hold of the DOS edition of Civ and its editor... changed the warrior's to 99/99 stats and made the grasslands super abundant.. Yes cheating takes the fun out of the game. Sorta funny when you're in the bronze age and you've got pollution all around you because you're industry is going through the roof.

Hehe I remember the good old days with Civ1, it was still fun even though you couldn't mod it. Once you get to the modern age you'd have to make sure that the Aztecs or Indians don't get nukes, otherwise you'd be toast.
There was an annoying limit on the number of units on the map that was set very low if I remember correctly.

Yeah, OK, where is everyone? I`m not talking about posting files activities, I`m talking about there being no more than 5 o 6 regular posting members (I`m not gonna say veterans cos I`m one of the them :mischief:) online at any given time. Just hordes of lurkers and noobs..

ATM - Spacer, Aion, Maisse, Supa, PcHighway and myself...

You can blame Supa for me returning to Civ3 modding. I am working on a new game from scratch, just got a new job, and my wife is pregnant with our firs kid, so free time is rare, but with all the work Supa is doing for Modzilla, it would be an injustice to him and myself really if I didn't finish that. Then I'll start knocking out Hawaii, and finally X.

It's PCHighway, or PCH for short (not personal computer highway, Pacific Coast Highway). Get it right, greenskin! ;) :)

I try and keep my posts below 1.0 per day, because I like to pretend I have a life outside of computers. Of course, I don't. But I like to imagine that I do.

Ah yes, vanilla civ3, or "the cruel maiden of death and destruction" as we liked to refer to her back in the day. That was back when cut and paste was the only way people made units. Back in the days when we worshipped Dark Sheer as a god. Then Kryten started following his lead.

Yep, modding for Civ3 Vanilla was a horrible experience. There was no way for a MOD to check a different folder besides the default Civ3 ones, so if you wanted to MOD something you had to add the unit directly into your Civ3/units folder. As such, you could only run one MOD/scenario at a time, and frequently had to reinstall Civ3 to use a different one. There was no way to decide where a civ started on the map. You could not place cities. You could not place units. You could not customize it so one civ started with X number of units. There were no error messages when you loaded a game that didn't have things installed correctly. It was always a crash to desktop, IIRC. That's how we decided whether a MOD was "good" or "bad." You couldn't simply extract a MOD into your Civ3 folder; you had to install it piecemeal. MODs actually had readme's you literally needed to read just so you didn't have to reinstall because you put the wrong file in the wrong place.

There were patches nearly every two weeks, and when there wasn't people started to cry because the situation was so ungodly. Some patches seemed to be made for no other reason than to try and kill the mod community.

One of the patches even took away the ability to hit the "edit rules" option because too many people were permanently messing up their game. Of course, that's when Hacked editors started popping up. Ah yes, Civ3 vanilla was a time when people regularly checked LabMonkey's unit library for his witty English quips about the units being made. Back before CFC had an "upload file feature," and people uploaded their unit in 4 different .zip folders attached to the bottom of four separate posts.

Back then, units were pixelly, and you know what, we LIKED 'em like that! Before 3D unit makers came into their own, they almost always started by making tanks. As such, for those of us who regularly updated our .bics/.bixs, almost every civilization had 10 tanks ranging from Industrial to ultra-modern. I think when Kinboat first entered the scene; he did so with a Mecha unit of some sort.

:old:

I`m an ork, wha doo ya ekspekt? :p

Yeah, I know you are not here often, but you are making LotM and are a true veteran, thats why I included you, or better say separated you from the noobs and lurkers :)

Wow, those ancient days sound great.. and painful at the same time :D

Yes, painful and great. Sorta like Mrtn's personality (joking! :)).
