Oops, maybye not too war oriented. But my plan is good- i think i have a satisfactory chance of winning. My best estimate would be 20% without story bonuses, 40% with.
Note: In some of them, i was in such a rush i forgot about spelling.
The Great Dramas of Sweedish History- Abridged Version:
1- The Stockholm Tale:
Prolouge:
The heretics struggled through the forest, hoping to find a place to settle. Scanians, they believed the heresy that gods were dependent upon mortals for their power. The priests had logically refuted it a long ago, but most people in Sweeden didn't take logic seriosuly. So Scanians existed, strugglers.
Even the Commoner's Guild didn't care for heretics, despite the fact most people were heretics. The "Heretic" faction within the Commoner's Guild had been disowned in exchange for a free market area in the northeast. That left all heretics- more then 90% of the population, without a protector.
Yacrey looked at the area. Like most of Sweeden, it was harsh.
"Come on- scout reports tell us that two Warrior divisions are behind us. We have to keep moving!"
"Alright- but we camp at Stockholm Hill."
"What about the divsions- they'll catch us!"
"Us heretics have to make our prescense known from time to time to remind the priest caste we exist."
"That's why us Scanians are losing people all the time- men like you!"
"It's our only hope- if we are remembered, one day we may be tolerated."
"How does that work? If we are remembered, we are exterminated!"
"If we are remembered, a faction one day may decide to accept the truth of Scanianism. We can't match the Warrior Caste in a fair fight, but we're the only thing that comes close. If any faction hopes to take on the Warrior Caste in a fair fight, they need us. Also, one day Swissia may show the truth to a high priest, who can be our advocate."
A scout rushed in. "Two Warrior Divisions coming in- we won't make it to Stockholm Hill!"
"Gress, it's time for battle."
(Will continue on the above one another time)
Reign of the Kings- 1:
The reign of King Baramus of Sweeden, unofficial leader of the Snipe&Warrior factions, was noted for the end of Scanianism. The title of King was conferred on him and his son posthumously by his grandson, but Sweedish historians, at least, don't tend to notice. He was an ugly man, but an intellegent one, with a life ambition to take control of the church.
The first step of this was eliminating it from the Snipes, who were mostly Scanians. To do this, he temporarily legalized Scanianism. The urban populace rejoced, as did the Snipes. However, he then used Orthodox snipes to pick off Scanian snipes, and exiled the Scanians, giving outsiders their land.
King Baramus died a failure at age 20 thanks to diease, and in his will he conditioned his son Iago's rule on an oath to do this. King Iago was honestly Orthodox, but knew that to keep his oath required Finnism as the state religion. However, he decided to do it anyway. Without the King to rally around, the nobles were forced to rally around the Priest Caste.
However, Iago almost lost, with the Warrior Caste against him. The only thing that saved him was the fact that the second-in-command of the warrior caste, Teres, made a catastrophic error of jugdement by converting to Finnism (though an honest converter). The warrior caste was reduced to civil war and not rebuilt until later. Iago defeated the noble's coalition, then tried unsucesfully to move Finnism closer to Orthodoxy.
The next king, Rites, began by establishing the title of King of Sweeden, his enemies defeated. He then moved against the last rival to royal absolutism- the people. Establishing strong warrior and snipe castes, he outlawed Finnism, reinstated Orthodoxy, and forged his own priest caste. Then, he turned to Prussia.
His plan for the attack on Prussia was not too good, but he distinguished himself by the sucessful capture of Koingsberg as superior to his predecessors. Rites was the greatest warrior-king and strategist in Sweedish history so far, and objectively was still pretty good. Impeteous, he was under the impression that he could conquer Prussia with ease.
This was never tested- Rites was assasinated by Bules, who almost took the throne of Sweeden. However, Rite's son Pi assasinated Bules and saved the dynasty. Pi, however, not being a great general, struggled to maintain even a minimal Sweedish prescence in the Baltic, though for a while he almost landed an army at Koingsberg. The Commoner's Guild, with popular support, revolted. However, Pi's generals crushed them once and for all.
Pi was a long-living king, living at least twice as long as most. But in his final years he was a shadow and a wreck. Having enacted a law to exterminate Finnism for good by the genocide of the Finnists, he discovered that his wife and children were Finnists. He carried out the law properly and had them burned to death, but he was never the same again. After that, Governor Clenas of Stockholm became the practical ruler of Sweeden.
Overall, the policy of these Sweedish kings was to fight the factions. After their reigns were all up, the factions were almost defeated.
Of the Swede Nation:
Life in Sweeden- Part 1: (Turn 1)
This describes life in the final years of King Pi, with the war on Prussia constantly going on and the factions in complete retreat on all fronts.
A normal person back then would be a small-scale farmer being squeezed out by noble competition- merchandise was the new sphere of influence of the nobility. The Commoner's Guild formed blocks of small farmers that worked together like companies, though it did not well accept this new role unlike the nobility, but these blocks of farmers often collapsed, and the people suffered for it.
Most people were heretics, and worked within the underground heretical church to cover that up. Country people were mostly Finnist, and city people Scanian. While there were occasional rebellions, this didn't actually affect the lives of normal people. Thanks to the influence of the nobility, they spent most of their time struggling to keep their block alive.
Unless they weren't in a block. By bribing farmers by the prospect of gaining Overseerdoms, nobles often collapsed blocks. In a collapsed block, or one of the rare places where one never came about, the farmers would be wage slaves to their Overseers, and indirectly to some part of the nobility. As farmers were merely self-supporting, the nobles usually drove them out with hired thugs once the local Urban Militia, Commoner's Guild-organized defenders of the area, was lessened even slightly in number or resolve. Even when they weren't, they were as likely to lose as win.
If somebody lived in the city, it would be the same thing as some sort of craftsman, with a diffrence- Stockholm itself was contested between snipe breakoffs, the priest faction, the government, and the Commoner's Guild. Down by the ports, people would most likely be in the navy or connected somehow with the Prussian war- but that was far from normal.
(EDIT: Forgot to put a break between these two stories. Ah well- i'll waive this extra story bonus)
A Typical Intriuge in the Days of Old- Part 5:
Ogarimus's army rushed to the port. "We have to get to the Baltic Islands- we must aqquire that fingernail!" exclaimed their leader. They quickly loaded up the ships, hoping to reach and catch the fleeing squad before they reached the safety of Prussia.
Yetin looked at the idiots. "Fools" he said to himself. "But Ogarimus's head will certainly give me a good reputation. Soldiers- attack!"
There was grunting. "We don't have enough woad to paint ourselves!"
"You don't need your woad- this is a suprise attack! Attack!"
The warriors rushed in, as Ogarimus turned around, drawing his sword. "Fools- you shall all die!"
One of the attackers turned around to face him. Half-decorated with woad, he was completly naked. "Get them!" he cried. The others rushed off to attack the men.
Yetin walked up to Ogarimus. "We'll delay this fight till you know what you're up against. Watch."
The squad assembled into a line, as Ogarimus's second in command prepared. "ARCHERS- FIRE!" he shouted.
Warrior Caste archers fired arrows from the ship, hitting the foe as they rushed up. Not one died. "FIRE!" he cried.
That time two died, but it wss too late. They rushed into the line of infantry, determined to defend the ship. And they broke it. Soon the men were fleeing back into the ship- a victory for the mysterious warriors.
Ogarimus turned around to face Yetin. "You're good, but i am an Elite Warrior of the Warrior Caste! Your warriors are no match for me!"
He turned to attack his own foe, but he easily parried, then counterattacked with a blow to Ogarimus's head, slicing his head off.
"Well done Kali. This head will intimidate Gel no end. Destroy the ship- it's nice to annoy the Warrior Caste from time to time."
The warriors headed to attack the ship and hunt down the remaining men. Yetin turned to face the road. "Hyksos- you have played all your cards, and fate has dealt you another. No matter- i have had a spare card in my pocket all along. You shall see it, and tremble."
Paranoidis looked around as the enemy were in full retreat. "That's the last of the nobles, the warrior caste was scratched off by Gel, assosiation means the Snipes, Priests, and Commoner's Guild won't attack- we have one foe left. Yetin."
"We need Gel for this battle, don't we?" asked Mevel.
"Yes- and his squad too. I've intriuged against Yetin before- he is very intellegent, and cunning. Who knows what tricks he has up his sleeve?"
Gel rushed up on a horse. "I've managed to shake Ogarimus, but he killed my whole squad by himself! Mel is dead."
Paranoidis was shocked. "But- what can we do when Yetin attacks!"
"Good timing, wasn't it?" taunted Yetin, walking up to the shocked squad. "Paranoidis, Gel, Mevel. The game is over. Surrender the fingernail, and you survive."
The warriors pulled back a few steps, as Paranoidis began to speak. "Never- we'll destroy it if we have to!"
"Who cares- if i destroy it, i win anyway. And don't think pulling back to get more space will even buy you time. Now you shall see my secret weapon with your own eyes!"
Several warriors leapt out of the shadows, and surrounded the group. "Gagoglach" said Yetin. "Great warriors of the old kingdom of Eire. They betrayed the kings of Eire- the Kings refused them blood. I will not make the same mistake."
Paranoidis's squad drew their spears, and Gel followed suit. "You have not learned the lessons of all the history of our intrigues- the one willing to follow their morals least always wins!"
The Gagoglach advanced on them from all directions. "Mevel- destroy the fingernail!"
"I can't- it's too small!"
Yetin laughed. "This fingernail shall be a sign of my legitimacy for a coup de'tat. You could never have won- you have no faction behind you with any real support, and nobody with brains. Surrender the fingernail, and i shall let you live. Gagoglach- pause! If we can't get blood now, we can always destroy a Warrior Caste Barracks!"
"We have to surrender!" exclaimed Paranoidis. "If i can get back to the Commoner's Guild, and Gel to the Snipes, we can build a coalition to aid Mevel and Hyksos in stopping the coup!"
"Agreed" added Mevel. "It's our only hope!"
"No!" exclaimed Gel. "If Yetin aqquires this fingernail, his coup will be legitimate. Swissia has never granted anyone the gift of a fingernail in all history! We must break through to the sea and destroy it!"
"We can't- the sea is half a mile from here!"
"We have no option. The Age of Intrigues will soon be over, replaced by an age of Darkness and the dominance of men like him! We must make one last stand- for all that is good!"
Everybody raised their spears, and cheered. It was a common factional signal- agreement to fight to the end. It was hardly ever kept, but this time it would be.
The warriors rushed towards the sea, as the Gagoglach charged in. A Gagloglach chopped off Mevel's head, but Gel grabbed the fingernail, ducking past the man's blade.
The Gagloglach attacked another warrior, but he parried. Paranoidis finished the Galoglach off, and their warriors began to run. "Ha!" exclaimed Yetin. "This story will sell for plenty in the free market! While it still exists."
As the run continued, Gel soon reached the sea. "Now- this saga ends." he said. "If anybody survives, give these quotes to the free market- i'll look good!"
Paranoidis smiled. "Yes- if anybody does get out alive, i think i need a quote. How about 'Gel is a complete idiot who does quotes to look good, while I am a genuine warrior who doesn't condescend to give quotes to the free market?"
Gel dropped the fingernail into the sea, as the Gagoglach approached. "Enough joking around."
Eplilouge:
Yetin's dreams would come true, but it would be too late for him to exploit it. Snipes, heroes from the Commoner's Guild, and one or two independent merchants from Eire who believeed they had a duty to their country between them would pick off all his Gagloglach, but not before radical developments had altered the field against him.
The Warriors and the Snipes, facing the threat of Yetin, agreed to a dynastic unioun between their factions, which were both made hereditary just for the purpose. Skilled Snipe manipulation allowed them to use the Warriors to also restore internal unity. But the demise of Yetin due to his lack of Gagolach left the Warrior-Snipes dominating the political field.
Resistance was dead- the Priest Caste, by assosiation with Yetin, did not dare try to break free, and the Commoner's Guild and the Nobles lost too much strength in the battle for the Swissian fingernail, which the Commoner's Guild had stolen during Yetin's fall. Sweeden quickly became a centralized monarchy.
Much as i hate to say it, none of this storie's heroes would be pleased- the lifes of the people did not get better, as Sweeden would quickly become a major warmonger, the Snipes and Warrior Caste slowly dissolved into the Sweedish national identity, and the other factions became fringe groups on the sidelines.
A Map of Sweeden's Provinces: (OOC: I have a map, but i don't know how to insert it onto the internet. Any advice?)
An Overview of the Areas:
The areas of Sweeden aren't exactly provinces, but areas taken over by various nobility and political factions. They are more tame then the old factions- with the exception of Governor Cletas, they only want economic power.
Hermann's Empire:
As it turned out, Hermann was an expert at the game of politics. While his empire didn't last long, he managed to outwit his opponents expertly by playing them off against each other. Other then Cletas, he was the only real rival to the King.
But when he was asssasinated, his faction fell apart.
Black Regions:
In this area, those who failed at the political game and survived have a hope of survival- the King has little control here. They hold out for their chance to get back into the political game. The Commoner's Guild's main base is located here- they have so much land that if it wasn't, the others would unite to partition them.
Remant Realm:
Borneas's war with a Commoner's Guild-backed Gepas led to an area which fell into chaos. The remaining priests took this oppurtunity to try and build up a faction in the south. However, warriors and snipes that opposed the unioun soon poured in and set up their own factions.
To make things worse, any old idiot who went to try and make a faction in the Remnant Realm had a good chance due to the sheer chaos. However, Borneas couldn't retake it for fear of another alliance.
Borneas&Lackeys:
Most factions are analogous to feudal kingdoms. Borneas's empire is the exception, analogous to a loose confederation of city-states. When Borneas was younger, his brilliant political strategies built the empire.
But, unwilling to risk a Hermann, the Commoner's Guild saved the previously dominant Gepas from defeat. The result was the situation as seen today. Borneas is still a defensive specialist, and builds forts throughout his realm.
Gepas's Lands:
No longer under Gepas but his sucessor and son Orulia, Gepas's faction under Orulia is the closest you can get to a typical factional leader. With ambitions for economic expansion to make himself rich and adorn his mansion in Stockholm, Orulia uses thuggery as his tactic.
He is willing to negotiate with other factions, and has few serious ambitions. Gepas was more expansionist, desiring to attack the vulrnable Commoner's Blocks, which usually fall under serious attack from another faction.
Commoner's Guild:
Creating blocks of farmers to avoid the thugs of the factions taking them over, the Commoner's Guild lost more and more terrortory to the factions as the century went on. A declining power and a relic of the old days where you didn't have to either fight for your life or be a wage slave, they still had overwhelming popular support.
But by now that was their only advantage- their bases, literature, and tactical system with it was destroyed by Hermann, and all their veterans killed. However, they were still a powerful force in the West- alliance with them was valuble.
Gustavus's Faction:
The remnants of Hermann's faction, they were neglected by Gustavus, who was always on the front lines. If he had spend all his time on it, he could have rebuilt Hermann's Empire. However, Gustavus was a patriot who used his lands simply as a focus for upgrading his sword.
They actually prospered under him, and became high quality craftsmen.
Stockholm:
All the factions but the Commoner's Guild have their base in Stockholm. This is the realm of King Pi, a city in which he is genuinely an absolute monarch despite the contraction in kingly power since it's height.
The factions have their bases in Stockholm because they are secure- they all (except Governor Cletas, who controls Sweeden's foriegn affairs) pay tribute to King Pi for the privledge. King Pi saves up the money to no purpose but luxuries to take his mind off his past deeds.
Minag's Terrortories:
Minag is a closet Finnist, and his land is the realm of the Finnnists. They travel there quite openly, only under threat from indiscreet policemen who don't understand the subtlties of politics. Everyone knows in pratice Minag is a Finnist.
However, this is beggining to be Minag's downfall, and his faction will not last his lifetime. The results when it is destroyed are still unclear.
(There are more, but i'll do them later)
Gustavus the Strategian:
Gustavus looked at the approaching foe. "Fools" he taunted. "You will die today."
Cletas had wanted to link up his terrortories for years- Gustavus was the reason it never happened. This time, he had 6000 thugs against Gustavus and 100 thugs.
No matter- this time, he was still screwed. Gustavus had the most high quality weapon in the world at that time made of Bronze- The Great Spear. He was Sweeden's greatest warrior. But more importantly, he had his brains.
Cletas looked at his foe. "They can't win this time."
Gustavus prepared a false retreat, heading between two hills. "They've probably got an ambush. No matter- i'll smash them! Men- charge! I'll stay here and wait!"
The army charged in, as Gustavus looked at them. "Men- prepare the rockslide."
As the horrified fools looked around, several rocks came down on them. They began to flee, as Cletas cursed his opponent with swear words.
"By Swissia- i'll get you next time!" he exclaimed.
"By his wife Nodia, you're screwed!" replied Gustavus.
