Then the instructor called out, “Left,” once more, and the training sword smashed into the student’s other side in a quick blur. He doubled up in pain, gasping, feeling at his side.

“That wasn’t... You said left, and went right. You lied.”

“My voice lied. My muscles, my body, they did not. Put up your sword, student, it is time to listen now.

“The art of dueling is not the simplistic hacking and slashing that the original swordsmen performed. It is a flowing, graceful art. And in the dance of swords–for it is truly a dance, a dance of death–in the dance of swords, you have no one calling out which way the sword shall come against you.
