Funanese History, Chapter 3- Amara the Buddhist

415 B.C. - 351 B.C.

Though a Merchant Aristocracy ruled Funan, they decided they needed a single leader, and then the Aristocracy would be the second tier of power. This would stop the infighting, as one person would have more power than everyone else, who would be equal. They chose a man who had traveled all over the world that they knew of, and had visited both Hainan and Srivijaya, Amara. His name even suggested power, meaning Deity. He had one peculiar habit though, that a few others had. He had heard the word of the wise Buddha, and followed his religion. In fact, Amara had been the man who had brought Buddhism to Funan.

Amara was a natural born leader. His father had been the commander for the army during the ‘years of expansion’, while his grandfather and great-grandfather had helped Funan become the great trading nation it was today. He was also fiercely loyal to anything he believed in. He kept gardens as memorials to his father and grandfather, and had the words “Impermanent are all created things; Strive on with awareness”, the last words of Buddha carved all over his house.

index.4.gif
No matter who he was with, if the time came that he saw fit to pray, he would stop what he was doing, put life on hold, and recite the Four Great Vows.
“However innumerable beings are, I vow to save them;
However inexhaustible the passions are, I vow to extinguish them;
However immeasurable the Dharmas are, I vow to master them;
However incomparable the Buddha-truth is, I vow to attain it.”

He had ordered the building of a new Buddhist Monastery, and with it trained Monks. He had just created the spread of Buddhism into Indo-China. He sent monks out peaceably to different barbarian tribes, as he believed that should barbarians follow the way of the Buddha, they would cease to be barbarians, and he would be making good on his Vow to save all beings.

He sent monks out from Phnom Penh to convert all the people in the lands of Funan, and that is what they did. By 375 B.C., all of Funan had converted and followed the ways of Buddha.

Other notable things done by Amara were encouraging trade by founding a new port city, further expansion of Funan, and setting up an embassy in Hainan.

Amara died in 351 B.C. after 64 years of leading Funan. He died peaceably in his bed, his last words being
Amara said:
Remember the words of Buddha! I am impermanent, but my Karma shall return!

After his death the lead of Funan was passed on to Rainsey, another devout Buddhist.

Great story!!!

@Neverwonagame2: I've already said this before! No Greek fire until you research it!

ooc: damn you alex, I figured you would attack. You will not win though.

To: Roman Scum
From: Carthage

Going back on peace, lieing to our government and then attacking and killing our people. You will feel the pressure. Carthage will not be occupied by Romans.

OOC: That was decided the moment you attacked and occupied half of Syracuse and crucified her population. Winning is of course subject to your perspective.

To nation occuping parts of Northern Africa
From Rome

...

To Atyria
From Rome

The Roman Navy will take measures to defend your shipping in these times of trouble in the Western Mediterranean. Though we would STRONGLY prefer if Atyria ceases to trade with Carthage at all considering what happened in the First Punic War....

OCC: What is the strength of the rebellious nobles?
A few thousand troops each, but there are also civilian militias.

For some reason, alex was very insistent that I add Rome's guarantees of independance to the agreements section, so I did. :p

You know jal, a little blub on the front page listing the wars that are going on currently would be nice ;)

I'm rather partial to IMago's Hall of Dead Nations too :mischief:

From Prussia
To Noricum

If you are unable to continue supporting us then we can manage but the extra 500 troops would be nice.

Give me a list of wars throughout the NES and their start and end dates, as well as a list of the dead nations and when they were destroyed, and I'll be happy to oblige. I'm too lazy to do the grunt work myself--that's what players are for. :p

Alex you do know I had perfect excuse to invade sicily. First Punic war ring a bell? Attacking me only led to current events. And such will attacking me again.

Lament of the Sea Peoples (fragment)

Before the walls of Troy they stand
Spear and shield and sword in hand,
Countless thousands armed and ready
Their purpose focused, their weapons steady;

On the walls, the king, he looks below
On the now advancing sea of woe,
With drums and chants and steady pace,
Death now stares him in the face;
Like endless waves they assault the wall,
Inside they fear it’s the end of all;
The women wail and children weep
As foes mount walls once thought too steep;
To ancient gods all now pray:
“Please, intervene and hold at bay,
Extend our lives for one more day.”
But none inside hold the powers
To turn the tide from burning towers;

A lovely princess in lonely bower
Weeps at life turned now so sour:
She fears death comes, within the hour
No palace court or damask dresses,
No love knot plaited in long dark tresses;
It’s fear of rape that she represses,
And the life unlived that so distresses--
No gentle touch of sweet young men,
Terror is now, that was then.

Why the hostility? It was merely an offer. If that doesn't suit you, we will lift our military restrictions on your nation for 2 EP instead.

Desperate for money? Need to go raise an army to slaughter someone else? Or do you just want to flee Iberia to your cold northern home before you are overrun?

OOC: I love NPCs with personality... :p

Now I see why they were so desperate to rid the world of Tartessos :p

OOC: Yes, that story somewhat foreshadowed my orders.

NPC's with personality are the best type. Unless you are Eirehann.

To all Buddhists in the lands around Funan
From Amara of Funan

Now that you are followers of Buddha, you cannot be called Barbarians anymore. We would like to have peace with you, and to do so, we request that you join us in a union. You will get our army protecting you, and at the same time the benefits of being a Funanese citizen.

Funanese History, Chapter 4- Rainsey the Traveler

351 B.C.-333 B.C.

traveler.jpg

The first thing that any person could say about Rainsey is that he lived up to his name. Rainsey means "rays of the sun going away from the Buddha, a traveler", and a traveler he was. He traveled all the way from Hainan to China to the strange uninhabited by civilization land called "India" by the natives, in the place where the wise Buddha was born. He stopped his travels once he was chosen as the successor, as Amara had reigned 60 years already. After 4 years, Amara the Buddhist died, and he took power. He had a lot to live up to.

As rulers go, he was mediocre. He was not great, like Amara. He was not bad, like the way the Aristocrats had been with nobody above them. He was just normal. He kept the ways of the Buddha, attempting to convert the Barbarians. He tried to expand Funan. He tried to educate Funan, so they would be enlightened. The education was in religious and educational ways, both by building more temples and increasing schooling, making some form of schooling mandatory for each child.

He ruled for a mere 18 years, compared to Amara's 64 years. This is because he took power older, and at the same time took more risks. He was the first ruler to leave Funan and head overseas. He also sold off land rights to other nations, and negotiated settlement treaties. However, in 333 B.C., when he was heading back over to India to visit the Buddhists there, and try to form them into a friendly civilization, the galley he was travelling on sank and he died. His legacy lives on in Phnom Penh as he redid the Palace, and it has remained the way since.

He was succeeded by Heng the 1st.

Nice story, again.

That diplo won't be answered, since it assumes the result of a story. You can write stories, but I reserve the right to decide, in the update, how things work out.

And Eirehann already has experience with NPCs with personalities--remember the Galloglach?
