Funanese History, Chapter 3- Amara the Buddhist
415 B.C. - 351 B.C.
Though a Merchant Aristocracy ruled Funan, they decided they needed a single leader, and then the Aristocracy would be the second tier of power. This would stop the infighting, as one person would have more power than everyone else, who would be equal. They chose a man who had traveled all over the world that they knew of, and had visited both Hainan and Srivijaya, Amara. His name even suggested power, meaning Deity. He had one peculiar habit though, that a few others had. He had heard the word of the wise Buddha, and followed his religion. In fact, Amara had been the man who had brought Buddhism to Funan.
Amara was a natural born leader. His father had been the commander for the army during the years of expansion, while his grandfather and great-grandfather had helped Funan become the great trading nation it was today. He was also fiercely loyal to anything he believed in. He kept gardens as memorials to his father and grandfather, and had the words Impermanent are all created things; Strive on with awareness, the last words of Buddha carved all over his house.
No matter who he was with, if the time came that he saw fit to pray, he would stop what he was doing, put life on hold, and recite the Four Great Vows.
He had ordered the building of a new Buddhist Monastery, and with it trained Monks. He had just created the spread of Buddhism into Indo-China. He sent monks out peaceably to different barbarian tribes, as he believed that should barbarians follow the way of the Buddha, they would cease to be barbarians, and he would be making good on his Vow to save all beings.
He sent monks out from Phnom Penh to convert all the people in the lands of Funan, and that is what they did. By 375 B.C., all of Funan had converted and followed the ways of Buddha.
Other notable things done by Amara were encouraging trade by founding a new port city, further expansion of Funan, and setting up an embassy in Hainan.
Amara died in 351 B.C. after 64 years of leading Funan. He died peaceably in his bed, his last words being

The first thing that any person could say about Rainsey is that he lived up to his name. Rainsey means "rays of the sun going away from the Buddha, a traveler", and a traveler he was. He traveled all the way from Hainan to China to the strange uninhabited by civilization land called "India" by the natives, in the place where the wise Buddha was born. He stopped his travels once he was chosen as the successor, as Amara had reigned 60 years already. After 4 years, Amara the Buddhist died, and he took power. He had a lot to live up to.
As rulers go, he was mediocre. He was not great, like Amara. He was not bad, like the way the Aristocrats had been with nobody above them. He was just normal. He kept the ways of the Buddha, attempting to convert the Barbarians. He tried to expand Funan. He tried to educate Funan, so they would be enlightened. The education was in religious and educational ways, both by building more temples and increasing schooling, making some form of schooling mandatory for each child.
He ruled for a mere 18 years, compared to Amara's 64 years. This is because he took power older, and at the same time took more risks. He was the first ruler to leave Funan and head overseas. He also sold off land rights to other nations, and negotiated settlement treaties. However, in 333 B.C., when he was heading back over to India to visit the Buddhists there, and try to form them into a friendly civilization, the galley he was travelling on sank and he died. His legacy lives on in Phnom Penh as he redid the Palace, and it has remained the way since.
He was succeeded by Heng the 1st.
