Just another SG

Got it. Not too bad so far I'd say.

I agree with lymond, I'd rather whip a sword than the walls. I'd also prefer to put Athens on sword production soon. The granary won't be much use if we build it regularly, by the time it's finished Athens will have reached its happy cap. I'd rather whip it to completion now and follow up with swords then.
I'll continue building mostly swords and the odd spear or phalanx. Since we're not planning to go on the offense, I'll return to infra builds when we get a comfortable defense.

For that galley down south, I'd send the phalanx S of Argos over to Corinth for defense. And move the settler away from the coast. If the galley contains a settler for the silk, I'd settle our location immediately. Will try to dispatch a sword or phalanx over there to protect the new city in that case.

The beginning of the war will be mostly in our borders, if the situation improves I'd try to head towards Coimbra. I don't expect to capture it, but we can pillage the phants and maybe scare Joao into a more favorable peace.
We're at 0.4 of Joao's power even now, I don't think we're really in danger in this war. Unless WW becomes a major issue, I don't think we need to consider any peace deal where we're expected to throw in anything more than some small change.

Charlie has 5gpt for trade, I'd cancel the fish for sheep deal and get his gpt instead. We have plenty of health.

Research-wise, music it is then, with a Philo bulb when the GS comes in. I'd bulb Philo even if Willem gets it first. If it comes up, I'll trade for Construction with Izzy or Monty, both are backwards and we have plenty to offer to them. If she offers it, I'd take Theology from Izzy as well if it still has trade value then.
I will keep the slider at 0% for now to get cash for some emergency upgrades, Corinth in particular might need one depending on what's on that galley.

Why do we need swords if we're not actually planning to counter in the short term? Isn't it better to just build Ph and Sp for defence?

Not sure why Construction isn't available in trade, when everyone has it? It's not a wonder-unlock tech.

Yeah, let's renegotiate the deal with Charlie.

I'd give Monte Medi and/or PH if he gets a bit more money on some turn.

Regarding swords, I was thinking about not planning any strategic offense. We will probably want to attack stacks though, where spears won't be of much use and swords offer more value for money than phalanxes unless Joao switches to mostly melee units.

Construction is hard to get in trade because it unlocks catapults. Since it unlocks a new military unit, the AI won't trade it away until it gets its hands on a better military tech. It's some weird military-tech "monopoly" algorithm.

I would try not whip Athen (unless it can really save a city). but otherwise I agree with your plan Thar. I would bulb philo too (though I dislike the idea of getting construction and/or theo with it, I would wait better techs)

Agree with all said here except the sword building. I'd rather build proper defenses and not take risks. We'll get peace soon enough. We just don't have the resources for a reasonnable stack.

T0 - Whipped the granary in Athens. It can grow back quickly and the granary would be fairly useless if completed after growing to the happiness max. Whipped a sword in Sparta.
Canceled fish for sheep with Charlie to renegotiate for his GPT instead. Oddly, he's not interested in fish any more now, so no deal.

IBT - Joao bombards Sparta to 0%. His horse archer kills one of our spears (~30% odds). Thebes gets Confused.

T1 - Debating with myself whether to attack Joao's stack outside Sparta. It's 3 swords, 3 phalanxes, 1 spear vs 1 sword, 3 cats, 3 chariots, 1 archer. Decide to go for it, I don't want to suffer the cats' collateral next turn.
Some terrible luck means we kill 2 cats and that injured HA while losing 2 swords and 2 phalanxes. According to the odds, a 4:2 in our favor would have been expected.

ITB - Sparta falls. No losses on Joao's side. Lost a spear, phalanx and warrior. An archer/chariot team is coming down from Leiria towards Argos.

T2 - Kill 3 chariots at Sparta. Whip swords at Athens and Thebes.

ITB - Lose a sword near Sparta. Monty demands Alphabet, I give in - he's backwards anyway.

T3 - Joao now has a longbow in Sparta, plus another one coming in and 4 chariots in the area. I don't think there's any point in continuing this game.

I know the decision to attack Joao's stack was debatable. Obviously he couldn't have taken Sparta on his own at the same time as he did due to insufficient numbers.

His cats had CR1 each, making them equal to our strongest defenders, the swords. With the RNG rolls I got, we probably would have killed 1 cat and one chariot while the rest of the defenders lose, injured by collateral. With his reinforcements coming in, I suppose Sparta would have still been toast, although a bit later.

Whatever, if you want to continue this with a different decision at Sparta, feel free to do so.

ha, Thrar, sorry you had to be the one to pull the last TS. I didn't say anything, but I pretty much assumed Sparta would fall. Not much you could have done.

See yall in the next....mysty?

Bah... one lost, ten wins in sight ;)

I am up for a new one too!

Same for me, the guy who's up may just start the wash game imo. I'm afraid I can't join the discussion until towards the end of the week for RL reasons. Will be back then for sure though ;)

My views regarding Washington's start:

SIP (too much forests to move), mining -> BW (too much forest again, scout for copper), wb -> ( wb ->) worker whip.

lurker

you should imo start new thread..easier to follow for us lurkers :-)

Good idea ;) I will just let mysty or Thar do it though!

@shyuhe: yeap, can have it one north loosing the fish... (I prefer not moving as it will net an earlier settler)
