Just another SG

So I played... just about 7 turns I think... but eventful ones they were ;)

I'm starting off with removing all those unnecessary, obsolete signs :p Then I do some trading; gold for fur with joao and fish for sheep with sir charlie as they're both our mid-term friends due to geographical closeness

Civ4ScreenShot0107.jpg

I also switch athenes to settler to catch the overflow and put the slider to zero.

T1
Sury requests an aesth-for-iw-deal. I kindly send him packing. Athenes goes back to granary for growth.

T2
Corinth grows to 4 and feels the mighty whip

Civ4ScreenShot0109.jpg

Otherwise pretty quite turn. Sparta switches from desert copper to grass farm to not finish the monument just yet.

T3
... for the first time this game, the war horns blow!

Civ4ScreenShot0110.jpg

I'm not too sure but we might want to stop that war soonish; at least when izzy starts losing cities which hasn't been the case so far. This war already crippled sury techwise, due to the preparations I guess.

Around this time I start chopping some riverside forest around athenes to go into settler later and spartas prechopped forest will go into the worker soonish as well.

T4
We get our buddhism:

Civ4ScreenShot0112.jpg

As you can see 1) I turned research back on and 2) currency is becoming quite well-known.

Athenes grew and is switched to the settler. 4th pop is sent to the lab as the 3rd FP is not yet irrigated and we're not growing anyway.

T5
Unfortounately our scout lands just beside a barb archer :(

Since maths is now available, I set research to it to put one turn in - there's no reasonnable deal available just yet.

T6
Sadly, our scout meets an untimely end. Well not that untimely I should say, he has been living for more than 3125 years after all!

IBT, christianity got founded.

... and we get a nice maths deal

Civ4ScreenShot0116.jpg

I also want that additional trade route now.

Civ4ScreenShot0117.jpg

There's also IW... I want to trade it with monty who surprisingly is nobody's WE but we can't get poly throw in as well for either alpha or aest so I wait one turn to do this...

T7

...!

Civ4ScreenShot0118-1.jpg

And we do have iron :) Nice to have a worker just ready :salute:

Civ4ScreenShot0119-1.jpg

And I may happily inform you that joao is now officially metal-less :hammer: That means the real game-deciding battle will be vs charly... maybe we should redirect EPs there?

As Corinth would soon run into unhappiness I trade rice for wine with joao. As we're chronically short on money I sell corn to willem for 3gpt . Still better than nothing I guess.

---

We got insight into joaos research sometime. He teched calendar > feudalism. Nothing fancy, hopefully building the MoM...

We could do some backfilling but I don't think those deals will be popular with you guys. I'm thinking medi + ph + masonry + gold from charly for aesth. By the time real WFYABTA kicks in, joao and charly will be our enemies and we won't trade them our military techs anyway; and the only other reasonnable techer is willem who has huge WFYABTA limits.

Regarding next techs; I tentatively selected CoL at 0%. The other option is literature for NE in corinth but I think we should better go straight CS since we're already philosophical. Teching is pretty slow due to the religious differences which is good for us. Too bad I couldn't locate any of the other AIs to have a better indication of monty's probable target.

Next turn we may give poly to sury for his cash.

My ideas regarding city management shortterm:
- Athenes finishes the settler then switches to all farms to grow until :) cap to be a powerhouse under buero. That means granary next, probably followed by wealth (only hammers will be from gold mine) while running specs as far as reasonnable.

- Corinth grows until :) cap (which may take a little less time than athenes ;)) and work as many specs as possible. If we are at :) cap and can't slow down growth anymore (spec slots full and working food tiles) we can 3-pop-whip the market (unless we're in caste).

- Sparta may build yet another worker next turn, then grow 1-2 pop as some more farms should be done by then.

- Thebes is a nice production city that should finish its infra now then may build another 1-2 workers / wealth.

- Argos will be busy building infra.

Ras, you're up

Nice trading (and nice report)! will comment later today (with a PPP prolly) but we look in great shape.

@mysty: my avatar is great, deal with it :D

Nice TS, mysty.

hmmm...Joao has no metals. Anyone tempted to go Construction and take him out early. The issue is gettying HRE and maybe Willie to pleased. We could go for Feud to and switch to Vassalage.

I'd say we should go for it. Joao doesn't even have HBR for phants and if we go after Coimbra quickly that will be solved anyway. Swords and cats should be all we need, waiting for maces will take too long.

We'll take a diplo hit with both Charlie and Willem for declaring on Joao. Maybe he'll even bring Charlie into the war. If he does that, ideally we should be prepared to strike quickly at a few cities (Leiria, Coimbra, Oporto?) and then make a favorable peace deal.

I'd rather self-research Masonry, then hopefully trade for Construction with someone. IMO Masonry isn't worth the WFYABTA, and we have no need for PH and Medit at the moment anyway.

Medi for philo bulb. PH for temples (:)). Sword/cat war is suicide. In the blink of an eye he'll have phants plus he will have lbows in 7t. Plus we don't have the production flexibility to build a medieval army.

I see a better opportunity in whipping out a couple of HAs to take... like 3 portugese cities then beg for peace... but that is mad as well... and not worth screwing diplo and crippling our not-extremely-stable eco.

Since we plan on taking out joao and charly soon, with willem being the only other reasonnable techer, we shouldn't have to worry about WFYABTA. That's a couple of free turns of research imo.

I only just noticed; it looks like neither monty nor sury have any metals (though surys may be just pillaged as he's at war). Izzy should be fine then and sury is not threatening to become a monster later on.

IMO PH for the beaker discount + possibility of trading for Monarchy to really grow your cities.
Or maybe Medi->PH->CoL so you can bulb Philosophy. You do have Buddhism now after all.

Most of the crazies don't have OB with Charley so he should keep you safe.

EDIT: working the unimproved fp in Athens will net you the last city 1t earlier. Also, now that you'll have 6 cities and Math you can chop a worker or three to get them quick.

We should double up the farmers near Athens to get a farmed FP up earlier. Corinth doesn't need an extra tile for a while.

We can trade copper to Monty for goodies but that may be an iffy trade long term.

I think med--ph is good here, as we may be able to trade for monarchy and it opens up a philo bulb (with col).

Building the NE is going to be a pain without marble though :( Guess it'll be made out of chops (more workers!).

edit: We can't bribe Sury to peace with Izzy :(

With all those many many forests and maybe some whip overflow, NE will be built in an instant.

Getting peace won't be a problem in a few turns. But I doubt we need this unless there's serious action which I kinda doubt...

No need to broker peace just yet, but a lot could happen. Monte jumps in, for instance. I wouldn't want Izzy to go down this quickly. That said, I think both Izzy and Monte are in danger of getting capped before we get rolling. Sometimes there's not much to do about it.

I'd go Medi-PH-COL. That should be just over 7t, and Sury's cash for Poly will get us there. We can't get a GS that quickly, though. Not sure what to do about that. Athens badly needs to grow soon and Corinth is 16t away. Athens will be 15t with settler and 1pop growth. That's 475-450 BC, which is usually quite reasonable, but Willem could always happen to pop a GS and take it. Take our chances, I guess.

When do we convert? The sooner the better, I think.

I'd also give Joao copper for now. We can renegotiate later for some cash, if possible.

I'm more concerned that Sury may be rolling over Izzy. We'll have to keep a close eye out to see how that war proceeds.

If we're rushing for a GS, I'd convert after we pop it. If we are taking our chances that Willem beats us to philo, then I'd go ahead and revolt now to start accumulating positive relations.

I wouldn't bother giving copper to Joao. Resource trades cap out at +2 anyways.

ok, had a look at the save.

First, I won't let you send me in suicide mission against Joao :D. We have size 4 cities (aka weak production right now - about the third of Joao if you look the graphs) and he will be whipping LBs in less than ten turns (which we would need to assemble a decent forces, not counting the time needed to research construction). Would be immortal we could try but in deity there is no come back if you fail an attack (and our current situation isn't exactly stelar)...

assuming peace, a little PPP:

tech path: med -> PH -> COL as discussed.
resource trades: none. Joao has no gold so I wouldn't send him copper for diplo only.
tech trade: there is an opportunity of getting calendar from Sury down the road but I am not sure it's worth pissing off Charly just yet.
There is also the trade Mysty mentionned with Charly. I would go for it.

builds:
Argos: gra -> lib
thebes: idem
Sparta: worker -> worker -> gra
Corinth: LH (would have been good to prepare a 2 pop whip with it for the NE ;))
Athen: settler -> gra

micro: Athen can grow a scientist in 10 turns iirc, but it means no growth (and 6 turns not working the gold). I would go along the growth path but it puts philo at risk. Though the trading potential will still be there if we are second.
Corinth can grow then hire scientists (whip needed as Mysty spotted because too much food, I would rather do a worker though)
others cities grow.
I will change some worker micro too (like Shyuhe said, I think those two workers would be better off paired since it nets one farm three turns earlier). I hope we can start prechopping the NE in this round (but it looks tricky).

settler goes two north of silk starting on a granary.
I would switch to budhism now (goes along with delaying GS to favor Athen growth).

Thoughts, comments are welcome! (I can play tmr)

Cheers,
Ras

I only thought of whipping corinth for :)-reasons... thus letting a market (3-pop) whip open.. with all those forests we can get NE without whipping IMO. Otherwise there's still stuff like rax or worker as you said.

I would also not cripple athenes just for the GS.

Buddhism just yet is nonsense. Not worth delaying anything imo. We can convert once someone asks us to but it will mean trouble with the others. And we're planning to take out the buddhists anyway sooner or later.

U can play tmr? How abt sunday? :p J/K

I am with you here :goodjob:

Well I was a bit concerned by Charly (might be previous - bad - experiences ;))... I am ok with postponing it though.

Don't think there's much to add. Buddhism is indeed too early I think, at least wait until the religion can be spread or someone goes into missionary position ;)

We share no borders with Charlie, so I'm not concerned with him attacking us. And Joao is nicely toothless. :) I agree with Mysty, no need for Buddhism unless we're asked to convert.

PPP looks good, let's see how it goes!

@team: I moved out of town today finally so I will play sunday afternoon instead. Sorry for the delay!

Ras

Bah you help him out then, kos :p

Well ras had time to change his CFC location at least I see ;)

Well, ras, I do remember you telling me you'd play on saturday. Would you like a swap?
