Just another SG

So still no decision on first build :p gotta wait a little more then ;)

Hi shyuhe.. yeap we have another spot... with you that brings us up to 6 which is good imo.

Good catch about the northern coast (I think I am replying to bbp, but maybe not :D), missed it at first. Then I agree going s, se (then east, past the desert?) looks better.

it's true we are missing worker turns going warrior first... (I like hiding behind other folks strong opinions  tx kossin :goodjob:) Honnestly I can't say which way is better from the look of it (and I will let mysty do the hard work ...)... but it's not MP so warrior can wait while farms are good enough waiting for the pasture.

hey Shyuhe :salute:

Worker first seems like an easy decision to me, TBH.

I'd send the scout 1SE, then circle towards west. No strong opinion on that, though.

Played 21.

In short: Built worker > warrior > warrior (1t)
Worker built a farm and prefarmed another one for 1t. Couldn't avoid one turn wasted on moving though.

Scout went southeast and found great land. Also, he ran into joao on t5. Scout also witnessed founding of oporto. Thank god there's not much desert.

Ran into a charly scout on t11. Great - let the REX party begin ;)

Decisions:
Techpath: I'd suggest the conservative mining > bw route. Not sure we'd need archery even w/o copper as we don't have much to fogbust.

Builds: Grow to size 4 working farms and then sheep, build warriors in the meantime and then start on the first settler. Another very daring move would be to go for the phants when starting on the settler at 3 but that is extremely luckdependant - as you can see charly already founded his 3rd city and ivory is a strategic resource and thus high priority to the AI.

Please also set the EP focus on Joao, I forgot that... so we'd get a few revolts when the war horns blow ;)

Ras is up, Thrar on deck!

Looks like we may not need fog busting to the west since it's coast over there and Pericles's borders pop pretty quickly from the creative.

arrrggh!!! Joao blows! It will definitely be a race for land in the East. I think it goes without saying that the next border pop will secure land N/S/W of Athens (at least until Joao starts sending galleys), so we need to secure some land in the East. Kinda awkward based on what we see. The ivory spot is not great at all for production, but could be cottaged up - plus, we may simply not get there in time. Cow/Corn will be a far more productive site for us early. With that site, I think we have spots for at least six cities.

Question is do we go for a second worker next once we grow onto the sheep, or straight to a settler.

Def no Archery. I think I might go settler at pop 3 here. We're slow to grow and don't have great tiles to work. Ivory is wishful thinking, but we need to make sure we get that corn/cow/silk spot.

I think settler at pop 3 is a good idea. Size 4 will take another 4 turns and only gain us 1F 1C (one more unimproved FP) for the near future as it will take a while to improve the 3rd FP. Growing to 4 will delay the settler while not gaining much in return.
We can send the scout over towards the ivory and see if anyone's going there. By the time the settler is finished, hopefully we can set up a fogbusted path to whichever site we want to settle on so he can get there quickly and safely.

If we can make it, my favorite spot would be 1S of ivory. There are plenty of forests around, which should be fine for early production. However, if we can get that spot we shouldn't wait too long to settle corn/cow/silk, Joao might take a liking to it.

Mining->BW is fine with me.

Mining--BW sounds good to me too. Settler at 3 will give us a chance to snag the ivory but I think we'll probably have to settle for corn.

Seems like a straightforward set: mining, BW, building a warrior then a settler.
I do not think a second worker is mandatory nor realistic: two imperialistic AIs is bad news. Furthermore I would forget the ivory: too close to Lisbon, and Joao is a jerk (declares at pleased iirc, might not trigger land target mechanism too early :mischief:). It hasn't any food available also ... In the same move, we need to focus on getting a path for TRs with Charly so we have his religion early on: the guy is crazy too :D.

For these reasons, I would go for the riverside cow/corn/silk site (1 north of cow looks good) asap. As Lymond said, it will be productive quickly and is a decent blocker. I would build the settler size 3, fogbusting the eastern surrondings with our two warriors. I hope we can settle around turn 40 to have a decent chance at the corn/cow site :)

Comments? (mostly what have been posted already ;))

I can play this evening :goodjob:

Ras

edit: cow/corn/silk has an amazing number of forests in the bfc, might worth considering prechopping these for a quick great library down the road...

Don't think we should or can discuss where to settle just yet. IMO you should play until the settler is done or something. Then we see how far joao settled (we might be lucky and have him settle towards charly) and what land we have exactly. Just keep the scout or a warrior around there. TRs with charly isn't our top priority, the AI connects fast enough, we don't have to spend resources on that.

Spoiler :
^^ Agreed, I gave input as the discussion on where to settle has started. Getting Charly religion was also a more medium term thought :p. Just a reminder of what must not be forgotten :)

Will play till completion of the settler!

What I meant to say was: "We don't have to worry about trade routes atm. Is it ok if you play until the settler is done? It would be handy to have a unit in the area we plan on settling, do you agree?" :p

:pat:

Go ahead, only thing I could think of testing is what gets fastest 3rd and following settlers out.

Joao doesn't DoW at Pleased but I remember being dagger'd by him in a DR game once so don't take him for granted :)

Some quiet turns... :)

We finish the pasture and notice we can gain a turn on researching mining by working one turn of lake. We don't loose a turn to grow size 3. The worker can join the gold mine just in time. The timing seems perfect we go for it.

Our scout then find hostiles: a 1.5 strong barb (C1)... we note his position and run :goodjob:

This turn we finish our second warrior who joins the eastern countryside to help removing the barb presence. The scout is due to fogbust south east as well. We start the first settler.

Some time later, we notice Charly got himself writing. he is up to three cities. I do not sign OBs to avoid Joao's requests to close borders. We do not have roads anyway nor enough units to scout him. THat can wait imo.

BW is due one turn after the settler so I decide to play until that so we can include copper location in our brainstorming...
THe barb warrior and an archer are killed by our warriors (playing with fortification, forest and river bonuses).

Here is the situation at the settler completion. I decide to move east: copper could be westward but we wouldn't miss it anyway. Would be a shame to miss a spot in the east by one turn. We can build a warrior and grow in three turns so I do that, the worker is finishing the floodplain farm before moving to join the settler party prolly. I queued a worker to be built at size 4 (that's my input for next build :goodjob:)

Charly requests OBs IBT, I reject.

Here is an overview at BW: you can see an incoming barb south east, with the forces ready to ambush him (note the 25% bonus of fortification). There is a zone of three tiles not fogbusted in the east. Both AIs are up to three cities, Joao settled one under the sign shown in the pic (forest chop IBT outside of cultural border). So our units and Joao's ones are fogbusting efficiently for now.

The problem is the copper location though:

not stellar...
I set research on the wheel to link resources. We should go pottery -> writing after that prolly.

Last but not least, I think I put EPs on Joao at some point :mischief:

Units unmoved.

oops the save :hammer2:

edit: to handle the barb archer and keep fogbusting the already covered area, it's prolly best to move the warrior adjacent to the barb one west this turn.
