Justinian's University: Defeating the Deities

A question about food corporations:

If you had 16 total sushi resources (clams, crabs, rice, fish) and 16 mills resources (wheat, corn, rice), which would you choose? At 16 mills resources you get 12 additional food - good for say 6 specialists in each city. At 16 total sushi resources you get 8 food ( 4 specialists ) and 32 culture. I realize that for a late-game cultural win the 32 culture can be hugely modified and very good for this strategy, but in general would the culture be better than the 2 extra specialists?

Why is it that those Hindu buildings are generating negative hammers?

Yeah, I was wondering this too but forgot to ask..

He mentioned it in the update. It was a bug from updating BTS version (3.00 -> 3.13 IIRC).

Annoyingly, more bugs hit us. The Apostolitic Palace is like gone, after so much effort to spread it to everyone. The Hindu buildings not only stopped giving extra hammers, but started giving negative hammers in some cities!! Including the Ironworks city and the HE city!!!! Grrrr.

Ahh, thanks. I should read more carefully instead of rushing the post trough

It's a bug and not just a visual glitch. The city really is losing 4 hammers turn from state rel buildings, instead of gaining them. So instead of 237 hammers/turn it gets 213, about 10% reduction.

And the Apostolitic palace is like gone. There hasn't been a vote for ages.

Depends on your situation. Culture vic - OK, that's obvious. It gets trickier when you're not after culture, but you need to push borders peacefully. I had this situation in ABCF first deity challenge. Founded both Mining Inc and Civilized Jewellers and spread the latter to my four border cities and the former everywhere else. Same thing goes for Sushi - Cereal, assuming comparable resource base. Standard Ethanol is also good when your health cap is low. When health is low, the food added from Sushi/Cereal ought to be divided by 3 to calculate extra specialists (and there's the happiness and the time to grow them too). Ethanol benefit is immediate.

If MM and Suleiman land is enought for Dom (which from looking at the map seems enought), I'd go that route.

I've been thinking about it. On one hand, continental warfare is easier. On the other, Saladin's cities are guarded by musketmen.

Though domination win is probably easier, i vote for taking out MM and then go for space, so that i can see how u tech through the whole tech tree using FE.

Great writeup, it tells a lot about how you thought things through. Now if I can get just the basics together, between this and the other good game walkthroughs around, I should be able to finally breeze through Emperor and start Immortal.

:thanx:

Thank you. I'm close to my 30 Mb space limit. There's about enough left to finish the University.

Is it about images or game files? If it's images, tons of sites host for free.

I'm five turns into the next round. Industrialization revealed tons of aluminium (not that I'm surprised, we have tons of all strategic resources but iron and bronze). Airships revealed some interesting info too, but more on that in the update.

Drafting is proceeding as planned, first tanks are joining the ranks next turn. Some GPs are also on the way and we may get to see Justinian play one of the aces he keeps up sleeve: Golden Ages. GAs are great in BtS, but Spiritual civs get to keep them for late game because they don't need to save anarchy turns like the other civs. We'll see how a GA works out for a 20 city 250+ pop empire.

Yes, I said 20 cities. Two more fillers were built. They get to work only a few tiles but calculations show they'll pay back.

Haha, didnt know there is a Chinese Civ club? Nice work translating, faily accurate. How many members do you have? Is it being hosted in Mainland China?

Also great thread to be translated, such an well thought out and in-depth analysis of the game is hard to find. :goodjob:!

 Thank you for praising. But actually, I think my translation IS posted on a site called civclub.net, and it is Chinese... Unless you mean another one? Address please, thank you.

It has begun...

1590 - 1655

As you already know, the war v Mansa has started. Priorly, airships scouted most of Mansa's army. He had a lot of catapults, trebuchets, and wooden ships, lacking the tech to upgrade them just yet. I decided to bribe Suleiman to attack Mansa right away and hopefully see to the destruction of these units before Mansa turned them into cannons or worse.

I stopped drafting as I already had enough infantry and Mansa was sweet enough to build the UN. Needless to say, the UN secretary was immediately given to the Byzantines. It seemed like I might get the votes for victory so I needed as much pop as possible.

As more and more tanks arrived on the border I felt confident to attack. The plan was simple: capture the two seaside cities that had their defenses reduced by Ottoman navy and then use spies to revolt the inland cities.

The golden age did not happen as one of the GPs produced was a Great Spy and added to the 1000s of accumulated espionage points I had on Mansa. The other one was a GS and I saved him for a future GA.

Mali lost a city on turn 1 and two more on turn 2 of the war. On turn 3 the Byzantine tank armies positioned for the final offensive. On the other front Suleiman was successful too, capturing a city.

By that time Mansa had researched Steel and Railroads. He had a major cannon stack in Djenne. Once tanks had killed the infantry/marine defenders, I used the upgraded conquerors of Roosevelt, the cuirassiers-turned-cavalry, to clear the city. Remember how they were literally stopped before the gates of Djenne last war? They had their revenge, flawlessly executing the Malinese siege and triumphantly marching into the great holy Hindu city.

The Walata advance was successful too and Mansa lost two of his three cultural vic cities. The campaign was nearly over, only the tiny city between Djenne and Walata was to be captured to remove Malinese influence in the area. Tanks and spies got into position. Anyhow, Justinian left off the details of the operation to his two newly promoted Great Generals, and himself attended a UN summit.

Mansa wouldn't capitulate yet, but I bribed off Suleiman to avoid any chance of Manssalization. I additionally bribed Suleiman and Boudica to adopt Hinduism once again. At this point of the game even Sala was at least Pleased to me (not counting poor MM of course).

It was a close vote, but we carried it ;)

Congratulations to your victory!

Thank you very much for this great game and this very educational write-up :goodjob:

I really enjoied reading it (I read it several times in fact).

However I'd like to see X's University continue (and I believe there are others who liked to see that too). My favourite is a Deity game with Suryavarman II of the Khmer empire. He seems quite interesting to me - he has probabely the 'strangest' UU and UB there is.

rather disappointing finale :p

but on the other hand, it's a finale, which lately my games seem to lack exactly because I don't have the nerve to micromanage in order to take over the world for the 100th time ;)

otherwise, excellent thread; thanks for the tips and the reminders
