Because K is awesome. Just look at it! It's a stick with two sticks sticking out of it. Also, when Kos went on Colbert's show, Colbert added some little sticks to the K in Kos to make it look like a swastika. K is great. Your question should really be, "Why can't we get rid of the letter C and replace it with Ss and Ks?"

That's the way we do it in Dutch...

There also used to be a large movement that wanted to get rid of the 'c' in Dutch (except for ch and sch), and replace it by 'k' or 's'. This was called the "alternative spelling". For instance they wrote 'kultuur' instead of 'cultuur'. About 15 years ago, new spelling rules were determined by the Dutch Language Union (Nederlandse Taal Unie), but they kept the 'c' in almost all cases, and since then the alternative spelling has almost died out.

What is the point of removing one letter? Every suggestion of how to replace the letter has just created a more complicated system than just leaving it alone. Besides, think of all the time and energy that would have to be put into deciding just how exactly every word with a "k" in it would have to be spelled to keep the same pronunciation, and then you'd have to go back and change them all, spend money publishing new dictionaries and such, then go about teaching all English speakers and readers, (since I'm assuming you're talking about just one language and not a universal removal), the new spelling. It just doesn't seem worth it.
