I just succeeded at the the most unbelievably stupid mission I have given myself in a long time. I was testing my new Muntasm VI launch system. It's a new version of my older direct lunar descent/ascent system, without drop tanks and with the new 3.75m tanks and engines.
Much to my disappointment, I accidentally fired the stack separator instead of pulling up the ladder after a successful landing on Minmus. I wasn't quicksaving or quickloading; my three kerbals were stranded.
So I decided to launch a rescue mission. Unfortunately, I didn't want to design a new system to make sure I could pick up all three and return them, so I decided to use my Apollo-style Muny Shot launch system with a single pilot. However, there was probably only enough fuel for a single ascent from the surface. So I landed the entire thing--the CSM stacked on top of the LEM in a haphazard RCS-managed fashion. I was switching between the CSM engine and the LEM descent engine the entire time, having to keep track of which engine was active and how that related to the navball orientation, etc. It was hell.
Fortunately, the gravity was low enough the docking port held and nothing was crushed. So then I picked up my three kerbals, launched off of Minmus with the LEM descent engine, then dropped it, flipped around, and used the CSM to push my contraption back to Kerbin.
I dropped the service module, and then deorbited the combined command module and lunar ascent module--thank whatever rocket god the kerbals worship because they haven't programmed heat shields and realistic reentry yet. By pulsing the lunar ascent engine, RCS, and the parachutes, I was able to drop the thing in water at a slow enough rate the thing didn't break. All four were saved.
