Kerbal Space Program

With those and the procedural fairings I have made a pretty nice-looking Saturn V/Apollo-style Mun mission craft. My only problem is the decoupler and fairings around the lunar module--I can't figure out how to arrange the parts so I can pull it out of the fairings. So instead, the fairings are explosively detached and then I do the docking maneuver.

I already deleted every stock fuel tank and SRB because stretchy tanks is love, stretchy tanks is life.

That's the one step I haven't taken yet. Thinking about trying that out, though, to make my lander prettier.

Hey Hobbs, time to check in at the jelly school:

Bob, were you a hero in the Kerbal Space Program?

nR4lYvN.gif

No, but I served in a company of heroes.

That is amazing.

Why aren't props in the core game? I'd like to try operating an electric prop plane in Eve's atmosphere, I'd assume its density would give pretty good lift. Or try a Pegasus-style return craft for a manned mission.

presumably because that's rather niche, and the game is pretty basic - I mean, it still lacks a real atmosphere model.

I suppose they have plenty of time to iron out the atmosphere and hopefully add helicopters and props--after all, they are still at version 0.23.

I just succeeded at the the most unbelievably stupid mission I have given myself in a long time. I was testing my new Muntasm VI launch system. It's a new version of my older direct lunar descent/ascent system, without drop tanks and with the new 3.75m tanks and engines.

Much to my disappointment, I accidentally fired the stack separator instead of pulling up the ladder after a successful landing on Minmus. I wasn't quicksaving or quickloading; my three kerbals were stranded.

So I decided to launch a rescue mission. Unfortunately, I didn't want to design a new system to make sure I could pick up all three and return them, so I decided to use my Apollo-style Muny Shot launch system with a single pilot. However, there was probably only enough fuel for a single ascent from the surface. So I landed the entire thing--the CSM stacked on top of the LEM in a haphazard RCS-managed fashion. I was switching between the CSM engine and the LEM descent engine the entire time, having to keep track of which engine was active and how that related to the navball orientation, etc. It was hell.

Fortunately, the gravity was low enough the docking port held and nothing was crushed. So then I picked up my three kerbals, launched off of Minmus with the LEM descent engine, then dropped it, flipped around, and used the CSM to push my contraption back to Kerbin.

I dropped the service module, and then deorbited the combined command module and lunar ascent module--thank whatever rocket god the kerbals worship because they haven't programmed heat shields and realistic reentry yet. By pulsing the lunar ascent engine, RCS, and the parachutes, I was able to drop the thing in water at a slow enough rate the thing didn't break. All four were saved.

This game urgently needs an atmospherical or at least a heat model so you cant reentry at 10000 m/s and survive, the whole thing would be much more interesting, missions should be planned more carefully, more fuel needed... etc. It is the biggest flaw right now IMO. How much time do they need to implement it? Is it that hard?

Try using the Deadly Reentry mod. It adds heat damage and heat shields to the game.

Didn't take too many screenshots because I was really focused, but I made sure to take one on the landing:

I've thought about installing and playing around with that one. But it seems like there is some configuration you have to do up-front, and some pods include heat shields and some don't. A bit confusing.

No configuration to bother with, just move the files in and done.

FAR + DRC = Happiness

Step 2: edit it so your in orbit above Tylo :P

Nah, I'm actually going there and back, no cheating, with FAR, DRE, and TAC Lifesupport to boot.

Now, that previous rocket was a bit screwed up, so I edited it to have one fewer stage, and added RCS to the CSM setup on top.

The rocket launches horribly due to the contents inside those KW interstage parts, but it does make it into orbit, using a couple hundred meters per second from the second stage for insertion. Trans-Jool Injection is coming up shortly.

Game was on sale last night for just shy of $17 - so I grabbed it :goodjob:

Wife still hasn't noticed :shifty:

But when she does... :run:

I'll hopefully be able to put about an hour into it tonight, tomorrow I might get 2 or 3.

I'm on an iMac, using the standard non-numpad keyboard and touchy mouse. I have a nostromo thingy, so that might be helpful.

So what would you guys recommend I do?
