KILL the 10 character limit.

"I've got the save"

I can't see how thats a problem...

The problem is we are forced to type more chars and change the (most natural) way we speak English, which totally defeats the purpose of the restriction. It's NOT that we cannot circumvent it.

It does stop one smilie posts though... Even if you can get round it, it does show the intent of TF and so getting around the rule is clearly an offense which I assume you could be banned for.

I'm sure his (or the new VB code's) intent is not to disallow reasonable brief messages such as "got it". Increasing "got it" to "got the save" IS getting around the rule. It's no different than adding junk at the end of the post.

I do not understand the threat of banning. Not that it matter to me though.

I was using you in the general sense. The difference between got it and got the save is one word so we return to my original point that it isn't much of a problem to type one extra word.

Why would having short posts be a bannable offence?

It isn't.

Brevity is a virtue.

Brevity may be a virtue, but the rule is there to cut down on the endless amounts of spam in OT (and maybe elsewhere).

The fact it means typing a few more words in the SG forum really isn't a huge thing - the point is that if it stops just 1 post a day of the "i agree" type (mostly found in OT) then it is well worth it.

Of course the real solution is to remove postcount from being displayed in threads. ;)

Multiple short posts with stuff like:

:p

...is considered spammy. This helps to stop it.

If this is mostly a problem for OT, use it only in OT.

"I agree" isn't necessarily spam by itself. I hardly see any reason to apply this restriction in SG forum.

microbe, I am almost 100% certian that this kind of restriction is site-based and not settable for individual fora. Otherwise I would agree with you. :)

Well, if you do kill the 10 character limit this thread would close and therefore there would actually be a reduction in spam!

OH! GOT YOU THERE!!!

If you continously made one word or one smilie posts and were getting around an offical rule, I'm sure the moderators would comment on your posting style...

As far as I can tell one word posts are allowed.
For example voting in the now moved Model parliament was allowed.

There have been no rule changes.

All the spammers will start posting stuff like:
"I agree bang split wizard ding dong googley squeak".

Thats a particular context where it would be silly for short posts to not be allowed. Try doing that in OT, posting "I agree" in several threads or going through all the H&J threads posting  then I think the result might be different.

Try that in the OT, and we'll see...

I don't people to come to the OT (or anywhere in the site actually) and get bombarded with threads full of 'I agree!', 'That's right!', 'LOLs'... ;) We want some quality posts here.

Depends on the context. People posting 'I agree!'s or 'LOL's in the serious-sounding threads in OT and elsewhere are simply disrupting the flow of the threads and wasting readers' time. ;)

Having been a former fanatical Civ3 SG person myself years ago.... I really don't see how you can't post something longer than 'I got it!' in the SG threads...
