ku1 - Ancient Romans

Rome, too large....not! Its too damn slow growing (without a granary) for settlers, too shield poor for legions, our capital sucks all around. Veii needs a granary and it could be a better settler factory than Rome. If we had been pumping settlers faster, we would't be surrounded by trash AI cities that will need destroyed. The galley build was a placeholder until the road gets finished, since we built a barracks and cant build Legions there until it is hooked up. Yes, more cats would be nice. That will be cured by growth, new cities can build cats. I'll be much happier when we can remove our AI friends to give us room to grow. I suppose I sound defensive, and I probably am. Sorry, doing the best I can with what is available.

kurtson, you know you are up? :bump:

Oh sorry, it just that this week's been kinda tough... i'll play tomorrow...

go ahead and play, else the game is idle too long

IBT: Veii Lego -> Lego
Pisae Cat -> Cat
Carthage starts MoM and finishes Pyramids

330 B.C.
Kick Portuguese Settler pair out
Trying to figure out where to place our forces here and where the Settler pairs are heading. The only thing that northern one could do is build in that chokepoint but it would just be an unproductive town for a long time, sucks that Hiawatha took our spot. I’m going to bring that settler home to build in Portuguese land.
MM Cumae a bit, Lego still due in 1, Pisae grows faster
Settle Ravena NW of Rome
Change Pompeii from galley to Lego now that the road is hooked up
Turn down the slider, Monarchy due in 1

This isn’t something I’d do normally but this isn’t a normal variant is it?
Take a peak at some Portuguese towns to see what defense they have
Emerita 13g – 2 Rspears, building an Archer
Sagres 25g – 2 Rspears, building another
Coimbria 15g – 1 Rspear, 1 Vgalley, building worker
Lagos 23g – 2 Rspears, building an Archer
Guimaraes 14g – 1 Rspear, 1 Settler, building Spear
Oporto 29g – 1Rspear, building Spear
Lisbon 60g – 3Rspears, building Oracle
NONE of their towns have Barracks

I just keep staring at the screen trying to figure something out… not sure what though :crazyeye: Clear as mud, I know. Maybe if we keep kicking their Settler pairs out they will declare. The war happiness will let us pull troops out of towns so that we can get this war going sooner?

IBT: Hiawatha gives us the boot
Portugal moves his settler pair back into Lagos
Monarchy is in, now what… We’ll get Currency for peace from Portugal when we leave them with 1 or 2 desert towns. Lit doesn’t help us at all and we’re leaving HBR unresearched. We could trade Poly for Currency now but that’ll just speed up our rivals getting Medieval on us.
The Revolution begins, 4 turns says our advisor lady.

310 B.C.
Veii riots, Antium riots, Cumae riots,
Hiawatha finishes Oracle in Salamanca
Portugal switches to MoM

IBT: Hiawatha sends another galley to our north…

270 B.C.
Lego takes out a Barb Horse, no promo.
MM more cities about to riot
Bring a worker to road toward Portugal

IBT: Nada
Carthage learns Republic

250 B.C.
Nothing of note

IBT: Hiawatha gives us the boot… again
Monarchy comes in

230 B.C.
Rush granary in Rome, will get Settler out when it grows next.
Switch Veii to Granary.
Turn science down to zero. 32gpt
Our settler in the NE is driving me crazy. I can’t believe the Iroquois settled near us before WE did.
Very hesitantly build Hispalis with him, start Catapult.
Warrior Number Two got bumped forward, so he starts his journey back home through Carthage territory.

IBT: Rome Granary -> Settler due in 8, growth in 3, will rush.
Antium Lego -> Settler due 5 grow 5
Cumae Lego -> Lego due in 6Nada

210 B.C.
We have an open trade route with Portugal
Rush granary in Veii for 212g

IBT: Veii Granary -> Settler

190 B.C.
Looks like Carthage sold Republic to Hiawatha for 115g instead of trading it for currency?
Take a barb camp, no promo

IBT: nothing

170 B.C.
Rush Settler in Rome for 88g, growing in 1

IBT: Rome Settler -> Lego
Pompeii Lego -> Lego

150 B.C.
Nothing of note

IBT: Pisae Cat -> Cat

130 B.C.
Rush Settler in Veii
Tell Portuguese settler pair from Lagos to get out, they say ok but do not move. We can tell them again next turn.

Civilian Units:
Settlers 1, 2 more due in 1 turn
Workers 5
Slaves 1

Military Units:
Legionary 16
Cats 3
Warriors 3

We have 6 Legos and 1 cat in Antium, nearly ready to attack.
The 2 cats in Pisae are for the archers in Lagos, I believe there are 2 Archers there as well as 2 spears (which will be 3 when we kick his settler pair out)
The crappy desert towns they have are better defended than their hometowns. We can forge straight to their capitol with our little force in Antium. There is a worker that will complete the road in 2 turns.

I did mess up on the slave moves, clicked the wrong tile unexpectedly. He is irrigating now toward Pompeii.

The Save

It's time for the legions to march. We need to hit the Portuguese hard and fast and then Carthage. If we don't start soon, we'll be facing rifles and cavalry. Focused attacks with multiple legions work well until then. Let's make a good go of it..

I see room for 7 cities down in Portugal's nice land. Once we clear thier original 4 cities we can make peace for Currency then go at Carthage. Leaving Portugal with those other 3 dead growth cities will never hurt us. We can take the crap towns out later (They're actually better defended than the main towns. Keep in mind those crap towns have spare spears that they'll send to pillage though, so keep a couple Legos back for defense.

- lurker's comment: -

clear thier original 4 cities [then] we can make peace for Currency

In post #33, Kurtson states Once we declare war, no peace signing!

I know the rules are still being worked-out. I think this rule is interesting for the flavor, but I understand the start may not have been good enough for this one. Is this rule set in stone ??

Thanks !

Yup, it must be total elimination. If there is a one-tiler out there, that might be the exception to the no peace once we declare rule.

I got it for tonight (8 hours from now), unless Kurtson wants to claim it.

I will go from the assumption that we're not going to make peace with a civ once war has started. That rule sounded like fun. ;)

My estimate is that Portugal will be easy to take now, so I'll start that war immediately. By the time we're done with them, I hope we'll be in a better position on city count and infrastructure to go for the others.

0) 130BC
Declare on the Portuguese. Kill the settler pair at Pisae, and

ku1_ga.jpg

Do GA MM.

IT
Carthage boots us. An archer dies on our GA legionary.

Veii: Settler > Legionary
Antium: Settler > Legionary
Cumae: Legionary > Legionary
Neapolis: Catapult > Catapult

Carthaginians start SoZ.

1) 110BC
Loose 4 legions to kill a spear and an archer and Guimaraes holds. Kill a settler pair near Pompeii. I wanted to turn research back up, might as well get currency sooner to squeeze in some markets if opportunity should arise. I postpone that for a turn to get some extra gold for part-rushes to replace our losses sooner.

IT
The Portuguese expose an archer and settler and move an extra spear into Guimaraes.

2) 90BC
Our horid luck continues as we go 1-1 at Lagos. Kill the archer outside Guimaraes and gain 2 slaves. Part rush for 44g + 40g.

IT
Portuguese move out more units.

Rome: Legionary > Legionary
Veii: Legionary > Settler
Cumae: Legionary > Legionary
Pompeii: Legionary > Legionary
Ravenna: Catapult > Catapult

Uprising near Ravenna.

3) 70BC
Kill 2 archers outside Emerita, the second one giving us this:

ku1_mgl.jpg

With all those units leaving Guimaraes, there was only one spear left, who looses against our legionary. The same goes for Lagos, where the single defender also dies.

IT
Carthage boots us. One legionary defeats 2 archers.

Neapolis: Catapult > Catapult
Pisae: Catapult > Settler
Hispalis: Catapult > Catapult

Iroquois start ToA.

4) 50BC
Found Viroconium, start worker. Found Lugdunum, start temple just to be safe. Kill a would-be pillager and a spear in Emerita.

IT
Lots of barb horses show up in the north.

Rome: Legionary > Legionary
Antium: Legionary > Legionary

Carthaginians start ToA.

5) 30BC
Found Lutetia, set it on wealth because production might be lost to the barbs (nothing we can do about that). Rush the temple in Lugdunum, and turn research back up.

IT
The barbs move toward Lutetia.

Veii: Settler > Legionary
Lugdunum: Temple > Worker
Cumae: Legionary > Legionary
Ravenna: Catapult > Catapult

6) 10BC
Army kills spear, razes Emerita and kills archer.

IT
The Portuguese found Leiria close to their capital. The barbs ransack Lutetia, costing us 18g and our wealth production.

Rome: Legionary > Legionary
Neapolis: Catapult > Settler
Pompeii: Legionary > Legionary

SoZ built in Allegheny.

7) 10AD
Loose an elite Legionary on a 2hp spear, but autoraze Leiria on the second attack.

Switch Lutetia to catapult.

IT
A barb warrior moves toward Lutetia :(

8) 30AD
Found Byzantium, start worker. Lone legionary kills spear in Oporto.

IT
We loose 1g to that barb. Iroquois found Kahnawake in "our" territory.

Rome: Legionary > Legionary
Antium: Legionary > Legionary
Cumae: Legionary > Settler
Pisae: Settler > Catapult
Ravenna: Catapult > Catapult

Lisbon completes MoM :D

9) 50AD
Army kills 2 spears and razes Sagres.

I stop here to even out the turns.

ThERat's up.

- I'd settle 2S of Neapolis with the current settler, 1N of Kahnawake with the next one.
- I'd go to war with the Iro as soon as Lisbon falls and/or we have enough troops to go for Kahnawake.
- I'd go to war with the Carths as soon as Oporto is gone. New troops can go east immediately.
- FP in Viroconium? HE in ...?

 that was some bad luck at some battles, at least we got an army to make up for that...got it

Preturn
things look good.

IT we get currency, switch off research, we can start to rush things when we have more money now

1.70AD
move towards Lisbon

2.90AD
destroy Coimbra
bomb Lisbon, whatever bad luck we had with RnG, I get lucky as I defeat 3 spears without problems
oooh, what a pity, th city with 3 wonders goes down in history
just nice to be able to start wars again soon as th Carthaginian are trying to smuggle their settlers through our land

IT argh, Carthage finishes the Great Wall

3.110AD
march towards Oporto

IT Hannibal is daring and demands some cash, but he buggers off when I tell him to shove it

4. 130AD
Take out Oporto and the Portuguese are no more

5. 150AD
declare war on Iro and march towards Kahnawake
rush court and settler, Rome goes for an aqueduct now

6.170AD
destroy Kahnawake

7.190AD
zzz

IT oh, Carthage starts Sun Tzu, we will face pikes soon

8. 210AD
march on to Akwesasne and also the Carthaginian city
rush aqueduct in Rome

IT we get the message that Russia has been destroyed

9. 230AD
declare war on Carthage, so it's AW on our continent now
take out Hadrumetum, that has a mere defender inside
lose a first legion during my set, but take out Akwesasne

10. 250AD
take out 2 settler pairs, get some gold from a barb hut in the desert

found a city to connect dyes for us, rush a settler, there is still a lot of land to settle

ku1250.jpg

as we know, with this variant, time is not on our side and we need to be quick. I suggest using the next leaders for FP and HE. Remember, we can't bring armies overseas with galleys.

Try and be fast with attacks and rush settlers aggressively. We have a lot of food, good for settlers

We won't face pikes from Carthage, as they have Numidian Mercs. I'm more worried about MDI's and the powerful horse units that the Iroquois have, the Ancient Cavalry from the SoZ and their Mounted Warriors. I guess my goal will be blocking the bottleneck off so those horse units don't get through. I will begin play tonight, so any suggestions or comments will be welcome.

I played. I didn't conquer. It's going to take tons of Legions to conquer Carthage, as the Great Wall has a hitherto unknown power: catapults are practically useless against the walls. Out of about 30 shots at Nora, I got 1 hit. I tried attacking directly and just promoted their NM without scratching him. Very frustrating:( Here is the turn-log:

Sorry about that. I guess I was so bummed about my turnset I forgot to pass on the results.

It may be useful to build some galleys to ferry troops south from Dye Town, to speed up our movement. Once we've dropped a sufficient number of troops, the galleys can start exploring to find the other continent.

Have we built our FP yet? If not, maybe Dye Town would also be a good spot, in order to get some good towns in the Carthage area?

Kurtson is up.
