Laptop lid, not in use, should be

Lid is shut. I have kids running around this house, I don't want them poking at my screen. They're not so great at opening up the laptop yet though.

Does it automatically go into sleep mode (not hibernation) when you close the lid? How quick is it to start up again when you re-open the lid? Does it run hot if you leave the lid down or up? Do you need the lid-space for something else? Is it flat on the table or vertical on the floor? Is it on battery (lol) or plugged in?

You talkin to me?

The battery doesn't hold a charge anymore - it only works when it's plugged into the charger. Lid up or down the thing won't go into hibernate unless I press the power button. It's on a desk with nothing underneath it. Plenty of room for exhaust. It's just an old computer. I only really use it for playing my older games that use a CD, as my surface doesn't have a DVD-R.
