The world is slowly crumbling under a virus/atomic acopalypse/perfections giant death robots.

you have this small undestroyable USB-stick with 1 gigabyte of data.
what would you put on it, to leave to those who may survive all this havoc.
you have access to an infinite access of everything of data.
what would you put on it of movie, music, documents, pictures,...

and yes, there is just happen to be some computer working, that is outfitted with modern day technology to run on it, next to it, but it's hard drive is by default empty, except that which is necesarry to run whatever you want on it.

How much of wikipedia can you fit on it? I can delete all the unimportant stuff like random artist and stuff, but keep all the scientific knowledge, knowledge of ethnicities, History, a Map of the world just incase they might have to rexplore stuff etc. you know, the important stuff.

The text of Wikipedia in English, no pictures or other media. 1 gb probably wouldn't be enough :(

A bunch of pictures related to scientific milestones overlayed with sentences along the lines of "YEAH! Check this sh** out! NUCLEAR EXPLOSION!" and "That's right, big mother-. .. .. .. .in' space-telescope." And then an in-depth course in early 21st century English.

As part of building something in Dublin a few years ago they had to knock down / uproot a time capsule from 100 years ago. Everyone was very interested to see what the people of Dublin c. 1900 had thought was important. Anyways long story short - the space for the capsule was empty.

Me - how much of youporn is 1GB?

Vladimir Putin music videos.
The complete collection of Wu-Tang Clan.
A demonstration of how to ghost ride it.
The newest single from The Lonely Island, Jizz in My Pants.

A short history of the world from 1900 to the present, some things about promising new technologies (if they're capable of reading a USB stick then they're pretty much here anyway), especially environmental ones and if there's space some selected sections of works of philosophers: Epictetus, Russell, Kant, Rousseau.
Finally, some of my favourite poetry.

Nothing at all? Nada?

-12 Monkeys
-Instructions on the construction of some basic weapons (small guns, grenades, thermonuclear weapons) in case the death robots are still around
-road map of the world's libraries
-the future chapter of stephan colbert's book
-my image, my cats image, and instructions of proper worship methods

if there was no limit to size, then Wikipedia would probably be the winner.

let's say i had some preparation before i submit the 1 GB, i would spend my time correcting each and every single Wikipedia article to and unbiased article that exlains both sides and then submit it.

Oh and i'll explain about how Poland was Awesome and like one of the strongest in the world.

pics of me, with a text file saying that i am god and that i bought the destruction of earth because i wasnt being worshiped enough and that they should build monuments to me and pray to me. it will also contain my holy book , which will tell people not to steal and all that jazz.

it will be very lulzy.

EDIT: damnit loki130 beat me to it :(

The Encyclopaedia Brittanica consists of 40 million words (source: wikipedia) or 240 million characters (since the average length of a word is 5 letters, plus one space between words). One gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Each letter is one byte in a text file. Plenty of space. I might also throw a world map, showing political divisions in 2008.

EDIT: the English wikipedia is apparently about 1 billion words, or somewhat over 6 billion characters. It's a bit too big for my text file.

shall we split our future divinity?

The genetic codes of all the world's most important organsims. Or whoever can fit.

You'd probably be able to fit the whole of therapsidia or maybe even chordata in there, if you encode it wisely.

Wikipedia would compress pretty well. Does a .zip count as cheating in the OP? I'd also ignore newer pages -- if it wasn't important enough to warrant a page a few years ago, it's probably a pop culture page and is not worth saving. Science articles excluded.
