So...

What's the "right way to live"?

Or is this a deceptively easy question?

The first!

Seek the truth till you die. And live by what you have discovered so far until you die. So help you God. Amen.

It depends on what sort of situation you find yourself in when you're born.

Wait.. it depends on what sort of situation you find yourself in when you're able to make decisions for yourself, be it when you turn 14, 15, 16, 18, 21, or whenever.

I would say, follow these rules, and you'll be fine:

1. Don't be a jerk unnecessarily
2. Mind our own business, unless people are taken advantage of and/or need your help
3. Seek to improve yourself every day
4. Do not indicate that you have the first post, if such a coincidence befalls upon you.

The details are going to be context specific.

How do I distinguish truth from lies?

1. Can I be a jerk if the situation demands it, then? What does it mean to be a jerk? (edit: oh right, this thread?)
These days it's sometimes hard to distinguish between a racist, a jerk, and a misguided and vocal nice guy with strong opinions.
2. What does it mean to mind one's own business? Is it not engaging in unnecessary interest in other people's affairs? How do I know if my interest is unnecessary or not?
3. Improve myself with a view to what?
4. "First post"?

Sometimes indicating being first is part of engaging in indirect communication, like you quoting one post, but alluding to another.

4. "First post"?

1. All I mean really is that you shouldn't go out of your way to hurt people, be it psychologically or physically.. or whatever. "Play nice" is the gist of it.

2. I'm re-thinking the inclusion of this one. It doesn't really seem to apply in a lot of situations.

3. Doesn't matter, as long as every once in a while (every couple days perhaps) you try to improve yourself in some way. Learn a new skill.. do a good deed.. communiate with someone you've been meaning to.. examine yourself and see how you can improve next so you can be a better person, etc.

Your meaning, sir, is obscure to me. Can you elucidate, please?

I suspect some implied negative criticism, but this isn't at all clear.

Tig is replying to Warpus's post in which he didn't directly quote Tig but part of the post was directed toward Tig's original post in which Tig indicated that he was the first poster.

The first!

Yet Mr Tigranes is plainly referring to the thread title. His position is that this is [only] The First Life, i.e. another waits for you. At least that's what I thought.

And I thought he was referring to me when he talks about quoting one post while alluding to another.

But, still, this probably isn't worth dwelling on.

I'm just very confused.

I dunno. Maybe I read to much into it. Its been a long day. Guess I'll bow out

Yeah. Me too.

I don't think this thread's going anywhere, tbh. I only started it for the sake of balance.

It would seem to me the first reply is as important as the first post? I did not know that was a thing, but it may be to some posters. I usually feel awkward when I do the second post, because sometimes there is no real indication where the thread is going.

It's a vector. The OP defines the starting point, the second post the direction. You'll have to imagine the arrow like tip.

At post 5 usually occurs something what we call in postology spaghettification of the discussion.

Thanks for the explanation. May you live long and prosper.

Oh boy. I just saw all this. Yes. I am so happy I made myself clear to at least 1 single person after all :) Mission accomplished.

@Borachio -- Balance theory is funny. I picture myself opening balancing thread for every skeptical thread here. "Religious people are stupid?" => 'Skeptics are stupid?"
"Is Satan actually good?" ==> Is Satan actually evil? and so forth.

Nah. I'll pass. Nulla dies sine linea ("No day without a line", not 10 lines!)

"Religious people are stupid?" and "Is Satan actually good?" was more about the opposite though.

And Domen and classical_hero aren't your average skeptic, so I'm afraid you're barking up the wrong tree there.

Oh right!

You're admitting* to posting something incredibly trivial. Well done, you! I'm impressed.

Dear me! I never expected to see the day.

More fool me for expecting something with meaning to it. That'll learn me. No wonder I was confused.

*You actually seem proud of it, too.
