LINES-World of Magic

Update X- 1600 BCE

AMBUSH!
-General Krippa of Gorin, as the Germanians attack his army.

The infant nation of Dur Veliz is finally starting to become self-sufficient, thanks to Hawaiian aid.

The Hawaiians have prepared their defenses against the Undead menace. The dark creatures have totally surrounded the southern border of Hawaii's central American colonies, but have yet to attack. But the presence of the living dead is causing sickness and despair in the besieged lands.
(-500 population, -1 loyalty)

Aquamancers based in the Galapagos islands have sent punishing tsunamis against the necromancers, but have only destroyed one former city of Dur Khaz.

Explorers in the west have contacted the nation of Kojaro.

Elgovia and Hyperborea have pacified the last remenants of Haida society. Tireless efforts from Elgovian alchemists have finally made a breakthrough in iron production. While they have not yet taught Hyperborea the secrets, it is widely believed that they will soon share the knowledge of iron production with their northern allies.
(Elgovia into Iron Age)

Ur has rejected an offer from Hyperborea to build warp portals in its cities. Back at home, The Lord in Green has instigated a large number of social reforms to his country. They have increased the intelligence of a few, but the average remains fairly unchanged. Many enslaved natives, notably the Haida, have been freed, although they have been scattered throughout the nation. There have also been secretive tax incentives for those of pure Hyperborean blood to have large families.
(+1 loyalty, +1000 population)

The Iroquois have joined the Hyperboreans in an invasion of the Quebecois natives. Unprepared for an attack, the barbarians quickly collapsed. The entire race has been enslaved and scattered. But a disturbing fact has arisen since the conquest of Quebec. The missing Horror, which has been unbound for centuries, is nowhere to be found, and it is generally believed that the Quebecois couldn't have killed it. People are reluctant to settle in the new lands.
(-50 Hyperborean infantry, -50 Iroquois infantry)

On the island of Rhodes, great time and space disturbances have been occuring as the Hyperboreans set up magical defenses around their island.

Control of Faroe island has been officially handed over to Hyperborea by Avalon. The Avalonians have been busily extending their colonial claims in the Caribbean, the northern islands of North America, and Scandinavia. They have held off the barbarians on Baffin island with the creation of a giant wall of thorns.

Gorin's army struck once again. Allying with Karthage, the new allies landed in western Germania and challenged Germania to show itself and fight for its lands. But there was no reply. While the Karthaginian fleet and aquamancers hunted down and destroyed the small Germanian fleet, the Gorin army marched with high spirits inland, into the magical forests. But things soon began to go bad. Trap plants would suddenly pop up, and kill several soldiers before being burnt. As the Gorin force continued to push further into Germania, arrows would fly from seemingly nowhere and strike down soldiers at random.

Eventually, General Krippa, seeking to end the ambushes, ordered his War-Wizards to burn down the forests as they passed. It was then that the Germanians attacked.

While outnumbered druids attempted to cancel out the attacks of fiery War-Wizards with some success, the inexperienced but larger Germanian army attacked. Lomba riders cut down Germania's numbers slightly, but were rather uneffective in the thick, damp forest. The two forces battled each other for hours, sustaining equally heavy losses, but eventually the Gorin were forced to retreat. They still hold the northwestern coast of Germania however, and the Germanian army no longer has the manpower to eradicate them, so random archer raids are the only attacks from the defending Germanians.
(-250 Gorin infantry, -20 War-Wizards, -1 loyalty (Down to worshipping, you poor soul) -200 Germanian infantry, -150 Germanian archers, -20 Druids, -10 trap plants, -Germanian Navy, -1 loyalty)

Karthage has created a colony in western Africa, south of New Atlantis.

Illyria, ignoring other events in Europe, has focused on expanding its Caribbean colonies. Most of Khuba is now theirs, and so is Jamayka. Their scholars have discovered how to work Iron, and they are incorporating the new material into their military.
(Illyria enters Iron Age)

Travelling south of their colonies, the Illyrians have discovered the Jungle necromancers.

Khemri has continued building the gateway of souls, and is expanding along the southern coast of the Red Sea.

Abyssinia has greatly increased its hold on southern Arabia, and has founded the city of Tranvacore in India. One would think that they had learned their lesson in the Sinai...

Voeveda Kiy is now Knyaz Kiy. Tripolye has gone through a change in government, and is now the Kingdom of Welikoslavia.

Initially pretending to be on Ur's side, Welikoslavia accepted a monetary gift and sent half of its army to guard Ur's western flank against possible Illyrian incursions. But they never came. With Ur's main armies away from the periphery of the empire and engaging Babylon, Welikoslavia took Bosporu and the Urrian western Black sea colonies with minimal bloodshed.

If this was seen by others as treachery enough, Knyaz Kiy was just getting started. While Welikoslavian messengers continued to inform Ur that everything was going fine and that fighting with Babylon in the Caucasus was fierce, Kiy, personally leading the 'Sea Army', landed away from the main northern Urrian force in northern Anatolia. He took several cities away from Ur, trying to quell revolts with promises of greater representation, with limited success. With this blatant invasion, the element of surprise and misinformation was over. Meeting up with the first army from Bosporu, Kiy took Smyrna in a bloody battle. But Welikoslavia was to experience its first setback.

The disorganized Welikoslavian fleet was badly damaged by the better trained Urrian fleet at the Battle of Lesvos, and Kiy's main supply route was cut off for a while. But this would not stop him. Pillaging crops from the surrounding countryside, Kiy kept his army fed and continued moving his land army through Urrian Anatolia.

What was left of the Welikoslavian fleet, now prepared for battle, encountered the Urrian fleet again as Kiy was marching through southern Anatolia. Under the leadership of the young Scythian Admiral Marak, the Welikoslavian navy scored a decisive victory at the Battle of Hios, and the Urrian navy was utterly destroyed. Lacking the manpower, Marak was unable to take Ur's Aegean islands.

Kiy finally encountered majour resistance at the city of Tarsus. With the Welikoslavian army exhausted and injured, the Knyaz halted the advance and lay siege to the city along with Babylon.

In the south, things are going far better for Ur. Accepting aid from the Indus Empire, Ur has pushed its border with Babylon northwards. The Indus Empire has taken several of Babylon's Caspian cities thanks to skilled leadership from Jishnu the Triumphant and flaming iron weapons, but it came at a high price of lives. The Indus advance was halted at the Tigris River.
(-300 Welikoslavian infantry, -40 Welikoslavian Galleys, -10 Volhvi, +12 000 population, -350 Babylonian infantry, -40 Babylonian Wizards, -250 Urrian infantry, -16 000 population, -1 loyalty, -250 Indus infantry, -50 Indus Cavalry, +4000 Indus population)

Organized Neoscythia has collapsed, unable to form a strong government without the threat of an outside invasion.

The mighty Mongol war machine continues to sit idle, rusting. The settling of the Mongol people continues, as they lose their need for a nomadic way of life.

The Vol'Kiss have settled several islands surrounding themselves.

And in the frozen wastes of Antarctica, an iceberg has broken loose from the Ross ice shelf. It is carrying a large penguin army, Antarctic aquamancers, and several Clerics of the Ice. They are heading to the aid of Hawaii, to end the undead advance. Will they arrive on time?

WTH??

Worst of all, it's hardly begun yet!

(When are stats updated? Can you please do story bonuses with stats instead of two days later? And how will trade points be displayed in the stats? As banked points?)

Kingdom of Welikoslavia.

Knyazdom of Welikoslavia is prefferable. For now.

Welikoslavian Empire is even better.

Good update, apart from that...

To Karthage
From Illyria

Explain yourselves....you heralded yourselves as guardians of peace and balance and now you invade nations.

Quoted directly from my orders, notice bold.
Conditional Military Orders
1) I promised Gorin I would support their attack against Germania but since he hasn’t responded to my message this week, I am unsure if that is still on. So IF Gorin attacks Germania this turn proceed to order two, if not, stop now and don’t read on.
2) Send the fleet and the majority of aquamancers to hunt down Germania’s fleet. Once their spotted, use the aquamancers to raise contrary currents against Germania’s fleet, stalling them in the water. Then use my fleet to ram the stationary Germans.
3) Send the main land force to attack Germania. Ahead of the army, cut down the forest in a wide enough swath so that the army can march through with enough distance between them and the forest so that we can’t be touched by arrows from the forest. If Germania’s UU is seen, use fire arrows liberally. This will slow our advance down, but lessen our casualties considerably. Any non-ambush should be handily outnumbered so if their foolish enough to attack, they should be easily beaten.

To: Illyria
From: Karthage

Since we have broken no alliances or non-agression pacts, we don't really see how this is any of your business but...
1) the Heltivian war we were merely protecting our allies
2) the Atlantica conflict was to ensure that their magic would do no more harm to Europe
3) our latest actions was part of an agreement we made to prevent war with Gorin. We would have rather fought Germania than Gorin. (OOC: At the time the agreement was made Germania was also NPC and I decided I would rather fight a NPC than a PC)

Uh, Okay, you had an inept general, he's just been executed for disobeying orders. And the Germanian fleet was scattered, so you took a while to hunt them down. And I was extremely tired. And I had some conflicting orders.
And I'm saying 'And' too much.

First level
"Tall, isn't it?"
I looked up at Haepar. He seemed quite unconcerned by the height. But then, he was an Archmage, whereas I had just become a Journeyman.
(OOC: Ranks are in post #132.)
"Y-yes. It certainly is, sir."
"Don't sir me," he reprimanded. "If you feel the need for something formal, Archmage is more appropriate anyway."
I looked back to the view. I saw the entire city of Dashiv stretching out over the plains.
"If you're feeling adjusted now, I think we'll continue up. According to the new standards, you're now supposed to reach the third floor at your rank."
I swallowed. The Stairwell had been under construction since my father was born, but it was only recently that mages had been tested there. I had been advanced just a month ago, right before the official use began.
Haepar took my arm and led my back to the main stairwell. I felt better as soon as I set my feet on the solid stones of the steps, each one a foot high and a foot long at the outside, the railing of solid bronze as thick as my arm. (I was told that the newer levels would use iron.)

Second level
The wind whipped at my hair. Dashiv no longer stretched out before me, but below me. I could see the farmlands surrounding our capital and the river that watered them.
"Take your time." Haepar said calmly. "Once you've gotten a good look at the lands you'll be sworn to protect, we'll go up to the third level. That's where the strong enchantments start."
I barely heard his words, caught up in the sight I was seeing. Then I turned and looked up at the tower.
"How much of it is still under construction?" I asked.
"Hard to say. With any luck, we'll go up to about the fifth level today. They're still working there.
Once the construction is done, it should be as high as one can imagine."
I tried for a moment to think of the possibilities. Could I perhaps see the coast if I went high enough? Or even Valusia?
Haepar spoke as if he had read my thoughts. "You'll never be able to see Valusia, though. The earth is the wrong shape. The sea gets in the way."
I allowed him to lead me up the staircase again.

Third level
I was shaking as I stepped out onto the third observation platform. Walking up from the second one had taken me hundreds of feet up, every step chipping away at my confidence.
"I'll let you go by yourself now. Don't worry; I'll be right behind you. You have to walk by yourself now, though."
From this platform the view was spectacular. Dashiv seemed a splotch on the landscape; I couldn't see people in the streets any more. The river led my eye to the other cities further away - they were visible, despite lying on the horizon.
I blinked.
"Haepar! The horizon! It's bending!" I cried.
"Good of you to notice. It's an artifact of the enchantments; you're not really high enough to see that yet. It just looks the way it would from higher up." He paused thoughtfully, then came over to the edge with me. "Yes, you'd have to be about four times as high up as we are now to see the world this way. Once construction is complete we'll remove this enchantment and put in a new one, so that you can climb the stair faster."

Fourth level
As I stepped off the staircase, I was caught by a sudden blast of wind. I lost my balance, cartwheeled and slid towards the edge of the platform. As I did, I realized something: The fourth level had no railing! I turned around, hoping Haepar would somehow save me. But as I watched, he turned around and began running down the stairs.
I grabbed at the smooth wood, frantically trying to save myself. But I found nothing to hold on to. The builders had done an excellent job of polishing the floor. Too good, in fact, because now I was slipping off the edge.

I grabbed at the very last plank, but found nothing. Suddenly I was falling... falling... no wait, I was gliding... soaring... back towards the Stairwell? Haepar was there, waiting for me as I slid to a halt on what I recognized as the third observation platform. "Welcome back," he said calmly. "You didn't think we'd let apprentices fall off and die from a half-finished construction project, did you?"
"Wha-what happened?"
"A simple translation charm. We got it from the Hyperboreans. Darn useful fellows, they are.

OOC: Iggy, can I ask that the bonus point go to completing my project? :D

Sharen, Archmage of the city of Vol'Kiss, pored over the ancient scriptures, again and again. As soon as Tarask had commenced the settling of what had become popularly know as Australia, Sharen had returned to his chambers and searched his library for every mention of this new continent. However, the true jewel of his collection, the one he was studying now, was an amazing work on Australia's flora and fauna, written by the former Archmage. But now, Sharen had discovered some chapters at the end, which detailed not only the wildlife and nature.. But also contained a thorough explanation on the geological, geothermal and geomagical nature of Australia! For the last five days, he had read, re-read and repeated everything that was mentioned in the old tome, feeling like he could repeat it backwards off the top of his head. Before he would report this to Tarask, however, he decided to investigate if there would be any truth to these information. Standing up, he cricked his neck, massaged his sore muscles, and stepped into his private laboratory.
The Archmage's laboratory was different from his students' in one aspect: It featured a round pool, which had been connected magically via a half-an-inch-wide canal to the magma streams that lied beneath the surface. Stepping up to the pool of liquid stone, Sharen harkled, stood as upright as he could, and began chanting a spell in an ancient language Vol'Kiss mages used during most of their arcane rituals.
As the hissing, guttural words rolled off his tongue, Sharen withdrew from his pocket a small ruby, a pouch of quicksand and a twig of a palm struck by lightning. Continuously chanting, he tossed the quicksand into the pool, then knelt by it and broke the twig into pieces as small as he could crush it into. Feeling the end of the chant come closer, he held his hand over the pool, and dropped the ruby into the melting rock. As the arcane energies pulled it into the ruby into the canal, effectively sealing it.
'..Sh'l'zas r'r'na!'
The jewel that had sunk formed a vortex around it, forced by Sharen's will. The magma still swirled in the pool, but now kept clear of the center, where the thin passage and the ruby were. A hazy picture of a flame-like figure appeared in front of the Archmage, a dull red glow emanating from the ruby.
'Why have you called me forth, Sharen Darwam? I will not obey your futile commands. I long for nothing but my stream.' The elemental spirit had a sharp crackle in it's voice, giving it the impression of a speaking fire.
'Silence, Sh'l'zas! I seek my answers and will have them from you!' Fixing a stare on the apparition, he reached into another of his pockets and brought out an aquamarine. 'Surely a magma spirit understands the ritual meaning of an aquamarine..?'
Before he could finish the sentence, the spirit rasped something vaguely similar to a sneer, and bowed slightly. 'What do you wish, Master Sharen?'
Nodding, Sharen stuffed the aquamarine into his pocket and replied: 'I have some questions about the visible landmass to the south..'

Is the mage rank system universal? Or do we have unique ones?

Ok, thanks. (I can hear someone thinking 'DAMN NES NOBOS' right now  )

Now, Iggy, I don't want to be an annoying pest, but according to the first page I have 100 cavalry. Huh? They were not there when I picked Vol'Kiss, and I've never trained them either.

EDIT: It did sound annoyed and angry, and I ensure you, I'm merely confused
