Alright, I'm adding a few NPC nations. Here's a story for one of them.
The ice mages of the south pole were growing nervous. The people were finally realising that they weren't going to survive on a diet of ice and frozen algae for long. Eventually, a few dozen fled north until they reached the great sea that surrounded the continent. The desperate people experimented with local wildlife, trying to make them fatter and better to eat. But their experiments had quite unexpected results with a small group of penguins.
Instead of growing huge, these penguins became as intelligent as the human experimenters. The penguins staged a daring revolt, sending many of their oppressors fleeing back to the south. Some of the humans had to admit defeat upon their capture, and joined the penguins, lending magical knowledge. After that, the penguins pondered their newfound sentience along with their few human allies. Their leader, who named himself Ross, lead them to a huge icy spire. The nearby sea, rich in fish, would feed them well.
So the penguins, under Emperor Penguin Ross, began building a great city of ice and rock, naming it after their Emperor. They are prospering, but will their success bring them into conflict with the aquamancers of the south pole? We will soon see.
Notes on Penguins:
-While not yet knowledgeable of advanced magic, many penguins can perform simple healing spells. They are developing a form of Nature magic, giving them control and communication with many arctic creatures.
-The experiments by humans have strengthened penguins, and given them several humanoid traits. Here they are:
-Improved dexterity, though still slightly clumsier than humans.
-All around increase in strength.
-Human intelligence.
-Language. Their tongue is partly based off Antarctic human, with a few other words for things that humans don't need. I.e., many adjectives for flavours of fish and textures of ice and snow.
The penguins fight with stone and metal weapons, generally inferior to those of current humans. They can ride almost any animal, seafaring, amphimious, or landbound as cavalry. They are currently incapable of ranged weaponry. A penguin soldier can perform any duty, so there is only one type of soldier in the army, though it is a very adaptable type.
Penguins have a gift for camouflage, often covering themselves with white sealskins when they wish to be unseen on land.
In summary, penguins are very versatile and can perform many duties that require stealth and surprise, but they are only half as effective as a human soldier in a regular battle. They are amphibious and don't need ships, they can hitch rides on sea animals. A person who may someday face a penguin at sea needs to know that a penguin is likely to sink a ship by swimming under it and cutting holes. Fortunately, they can only sink a ship slowly in this fashion, so leaks can often be stopped early.
While I'm on this topic, das, what's with you and polar bears?
