LINESII- Into the Darkness

As I sent orders twenty or so minutes ago, its a belated advice. ;) Don't worry, I've managed/I'll manage.

As I just got off the train, and board the plane in <24 hours, I can squeak out a last message from a foreign computer. Don't expect to hear from me until well into August. Iggy, please NPC New Veritas after this turn, and continue/expand the various things written in my current orders. Thanks!

1889, Strategy does have facets of Chess, but key differences. The board is larger, and there are two primary objectives, the capturing of the opponent's capitol located in a fixed location chosen at the game's beginning, and the capture/killing of the opponent's Elder (High Priest, Emperor, Lengelzai, etc, dependent on culture) who is quite similar to the King in Chess. The board is larger than a standard chess board, and there are around twenty-five pieces.

Different pieces have different strengths, according to their level of power/importance. When two pieces meet in a skirmish, dice are used to determine the outcome. Seven sided dice are used. This simulates the unpredicability of the battlefield...after all, a determined group of skirmishers could theoretically turn back an elite group of swordsmen, though the odds would certainly be against them. A swordsman might need a hit on four or above to kill the opponent, where the skirmisher would need a six or seven. If neither piece scores a hit, the skirmish is considered a stalemate and neither is killed. The same would hold true if both score a hit, though then each piece would be "paralyzed" from the damage they took, unable to move for the next turn even though there was no victor.

Archers can attack from range, but are slaughtered in close quarters.

There are two variants of the game at this point. The northern school prefers to use terrain squares such as mountains and rivers placed at random or in a pre-agreed pattern. The rationale for this is that true commanders take all facets of the battle into consideration, and that every battle is different.

The southern school prefers to keep the board blank, arguing that pure tactics unhindered by obstacles is the right way to play the game. They also argue that most major battles in history were fought on flat ground.

I'd love to develop the game to a point where I can actually play it, I just have to finish working out the kinks. But essentially it's Chess, taking some elements from Risk, Stratego, Archon and Warhammer.

A wise man once wrote, "An Interregium is rare, and justly so. A good one is an unexpected blessing; a poor one an unmitigated disaster." We would be perfectly willing to expand trade in the future as you suggested, though political stability brings economic prosperity, we might add.

The Disciples of the One have conferred, and in light of your actions spareing Oneist followers in Davar, your honorable war on the corrupt states of the upper Wardash, and the presence, past and present, of Valin soldiers in your armies, we see fit to confer our spiritual blessing upon your crusade. Though such a blessing brings no divisions, we fully endorse the actions of Tellium, Kalmar and Kerania in supporting your endeavors.

OOC:  That was surprising indeed. I assume you're not worried about contempt storming all the way down here? :(

@alex994: nice story (:p), though the Citadelers wouldn't act so helpless and shocked. They've seen it all, and they're encouraged not to show their emotions.

Yes, but they're used to being in radically new cultures. That's their job.

And just because they're pacifists doesn't mean they can't defend themselves...

But we're nothing like the other "radically new cultures" they've met before. The other "radically new cultures" are either primitive/barbaric or has been influenced by the existing cradle cultures. Guangfei is neither ;)

But these are fearsome thugs! VERY FEARSOME! They have many many fearsome scars! :p

Don't you just hate me? :D

ooc people who don't need to worry about this, Shalamari, Khemri, Croyodon, and Skilv'so. Anyone else, you have been warned

Well if you really feel the need, though you don't strike me as the type to throw thousands of troops at an enemy that would be totally prepared for you. Just a judgement call on my part, I'd hate to be wrong. :)

I haven't been your neighbor for long, but I have to say I'm starting to dislike that blue color New Veritas is on the map ;)

At the Gate

Sundiata’s mission was a success. He was now able to buy the support of those who did not already love him. Far more than a bandit chief now, he didn’t need to wait long until his followers urged him to march on Zarz and expel the Elders.

Luculis had been busy with his own plans during Sundiata’s absence. The Assembly trembled in fear and begged Luculis to take the title of Autorex hoping to divert Sundiata’s anger away from them, but Luculis stalled. He knew it must only happen at the last moment, when it will be too late for regret.

Soon Sundiata returned to the capitol at the head of a large and well armed following. More disciplined and well armed than Luculis had expected but those were minor concerns. Of far more significance was that they had siege weapons, which would require a revision of his plans.

Every one knew the role Quintus Selinius, the gate keeper, played to Lord Strategius. It was an accident that could not be counted on. Sundiata knew that he would not be allowed in to vent his ambition on the Assembly or on the capitol itself. But Luculis knew things too. He knew that Sundiata was no Strategius; he had the backing of a mob, well armed to be sure, but not a disciplined army. So to Sundiata’s surprise, to the wild cheering of his horde, and to the horror of the capitol’s residents the gate did open. Not by accident, but by order of Luculis himself.

The poverty, the hunger, the anger and disgust that bound Sundiata’s followers to him poured into the wealthy city’s gaping maw. It was an expensive move, but with a stroke Luculis had bought Sundiata’s troops. Consumed by the logic only a mob can understand, his followers lost all sense of purpose, they scattered through the city bent only on mayhem. Amidst the pillage, the would-be autorex was found and carried off by Elder Guards almost unnoticed by his former followers.

The White Chamber was virtually empty except for Luculis and his guards. The conspicuous lack of council members signified that Luculis had finally allowed himself to be persuaded. At the last possible moment, with the elders on the verge of panic, Luculis accepted the Assembly’s nomination of Autorex.

“I misjudged, I thought you corrupt but you’re mad! You’d destroy the nation just for the chance to rule over the ashes” Sundiata laughed, but only briefly. He was exhausted, his nerves were spent and his life was forfeit.

“Not at all, these things always look much worse than they really are. The soldiers are confined to barracks, your mob will gorge itself on vengeance tonight and the army will restore order tomorrow when their energies are spent. I’d say fewer than 200 hundred will perish…you among them of course. In two days I will bring you before the widows and victims, you will be convicted of treason and executed. In the mean time shall we finish our game?”

P.S. I decided to change the name of the game to Chess. ;)

Okay, take the first one, the second one, and the last one, the third and fourth can be forgotten, except for a few notes on the third that aren't invalidated by the fifth.

I think.

Vacations by nature make people paranoid and jumpy, it's just the way the world works!

As we mentioned earlier, the position of Autorex is designed to be temporary. We sincerely hope that after your wars and various domestic troubles are resolved, that power will be returned to the Assemblum. Republics must never give way to the domination of one; it has never been so in a Valin state.

EDIT: On second thought Iggy, just ignore the fourth. I can put all the various notes into one PM and send it to you if you like, that way you only have to deal with that and the first PM.
