Peaceful Matters in 1961 A.D.
The situation in North America, in regards to the Californian-Texas war, went from bloody, to weird, to just downright strange. After the Texan Republic's invasion of it's neighbor last year, a growing number of American nations began casting their die in with the Californians, to fight off what they viewed to be no more then a violent aggressor state. Sensing its fate, Texas completely reversed it's pro-war policy of last year, and instead, began caving into the Sitka-Quinto Cooperative powers, without so much as a shot being fired by both sides. The Confederacy, previously an ally to the rogue state, declared an end to the alliance, and all but threatened military action against the state for its wanton assault in the year prior.
The Texan government fumbled around with negotiations, to say the least, leaving most observers in the international community completely bewildered at the diplomacy (or lack there of) put fourth by the Texan government. Eventually, in the hopes of preventing more unnecessary bloodshed, the Confederate President, James Monroe Forrest issued the Columbus Accords, securing the independence of Texas (though, it's debatable as to wether or not it was ever in question), establishing it as a protectorate state, while it's territory was split between the Confederacy and California.
So while Texan troops were being escorted off of their lands by the hands of the Confederates to the tune of Dixie, and the Californians (to no song in particular), violent protests began erupting in the Texan state capital, over the grievous loss of land, and the humiliation of the nation as a whole. The Confederates and Californians have been fairly benevolent to their new countrymen thus far, with the Confederacy even going so far as to grant the Texans Confederate Citizenship. However a strong desire to return to Texas once more has gripped portions of the annexed populace, with a force calling themselves 'The Texan Ranchers' appearing, to fight for re-annexation by Texas. Thus far, they've committed some minors acts against the occupying forces, (see Military Events) but Confederate kindness has dulled down quite a bit of the hatred. Meanwhile, Californian troops fortify on the Rio Grande in the hopes that no such attack ever occurs again...
In Ukraine (or,
the Ukraine, as locals have called it) a sort of infrastructural revolution started taking place. Railroads, ports and roads began receiving a massive overhaul, with more then a little help from their European allies in the west. German engineers oversaw new organization and construction techniques in the Ukrainian railroaded, along with teaching Ukrainian railroad workers better maintenance skills. Black Sea ports, one of the key components in the Ukrainian economy, also received a revamp, with their piers being extended to allow for larger merchant vessels to dock. All of these improvements not only gave the previously unemployed a job, but increased resource availability significantly. (+30 Ukrainian IP, ++4 Ukrainian IP)
The Sitka-Oregon railroad was finally finished in Alaska this year. The first train from the capital made its way down to the border this summer. (++4 Alaskan IP, +1 Alaska EP)
Keeping with this revitalization, the Alaskan Parliament started an entire infrastructural over-haul. As to what specifically they were going for, no one seems to be solid in knowing. But what is known, is various aspects of Alaska society have been touched by these improvements, be it metro-systems in it's 'cities', or it's fixed up shipping industry.
Indochina has been quite busy searching around its waters in the Pacific, and some as-of-yet undeveloped jungle areas, in hopes of finding some oil resources. During the searching, some oilfields were found, and investors jump into the fray right away. The government hasn't necessarily started funding anything past the initial exploration, but some companies have already began production, with General Indochinese Oil starting what seems to be almost a monopoly on the lucrative business. (+140 Indochinese IP)
In the Netherlands, a transportation overhaul, alikened to what Indochina and Alaska have been doing, began. Inter-municipal transportation for public use (and as some say, many of whom are critics of De Vries, urban defense) has been among the most emphasized points of the project. Large portions of the project are finished in the Netherlands' European territories, while progress has begun to be made across the Dutch Empire, in Africa, Suriname and the Pacific.
With a war still going on in Central America
(see Military Matters), Gran Colombia had attempted to invest its money into fixing up the Panama Canal. But upon a bombing raid on it's very first inspection, the leaders of Gran Colombia have instead deemed oil drilling operations on Lake Maracaibo a bit more appropriate. And they've struck it big. By the end of the year, Gran Colombia has managed to set up several refineries on the lake, bringing in a steady source of income, and a good job opportunity for Colombian laborers. So long as Oil continues to be a major fuel source, that is. (+1 Colombian EP, ++7 Colombian IP)
Turkish missionaries have been busy at work in Romania, Serbia and Greece, attempting to spread the Islamic faith to anyone willing to give them a chance. More often then not, they've been given the cold shoulder to would-be converts, though this may change in the next year, should the Turks continue with their plan to fund Mosques in the region.
Education reforms in the German Colonial school system has led to a large number of teaching jobs across the Reich to offer themselves up, and of course, a slightly more 'Germanic' native population.
The Bank of Britain has received another funding boost. In the last year, it has essentially become the defacto bank of the British Empire, causing some to cry 'Socialism!', and others to well.. not really cry anything. This boost has allowed for the bank to open up some new locations across the Empire, though not much else.. (++3 British IP)
And as Britain's banks are becoming Centralized, so is its energy industry. A British Energy Company has attempted to nationalize the entire energy industry into this one company. New mines, oils rigs, power plants, and factories have begun opening up around Great Britain, and in it's Oceanic colonies of New Zealand and Australia. This giant merger has definitely raised some eye-brows in Parliament, and put sections of the British workforce out of a job (many looking for employment in a new Bank) though the immediate economic benefit is expected upon completion. Wether or not this economic boon will last is the question of the day. This project as of now remains unfinished.
Russia has also begun a massive nation-wide Energy Project. Increased drilling and production of oil and other natural gases have come from the Russian government finally tapping the massive resource reserves under it's control. Oil, coal and other metals were found throughout the massive nation, and production has already started with haste. Russian exports have also begun, even entering such far reaching places as West Africa, the Malagasy Republic, and of course it's neighboring Soviet Republics. The 'Industrial Quota Act of 1961', in New England, has led to an increase in wartime production. Expensive luxuries, such as televisions and cars have all been essentially halted, in favor of the production of things such as tanks, and planes. Speeches made by politicians, and famous New Englanders have led to large scale conservation of precious resources, such as food and oil across the country. Needless to say, this has overall helped a bit with the war-industry, though it has left more then a few house-wives grunting in annoyance. Riots in Africa from last year have continued into this year, with Togoland and Chad being the prime 'troubled' spots. The increased German presence in the colonies have kept some would-be rioters out of the way, though it seems to of enticed others. French forces in Chad as a whole, have found themselves rather unsupported and outnumbered.
Keeping with it's economic projects, Britain has also put money into refitting stores and other revenue making buildings across the Empire. (+15 British IP, +1 British EP)
More Dutch businesses are investing in the development of the Congo. With the offer of government loans to businesses willing to set up shop in the region, a flurry of economic activity has erupted in the otherwise undeveloped colony. (+1 Dutch EP)
A slew of Western European diplomats visited the Ukraine this year, with Dutch Prime Minister Christoofer De Vries being among the most prominent figures. Trailing his giant ego, was an equally large amount of camera crews, and reporters. Among the things he spoke about was the 'Spirit of Friendship', between the Ukrainian and Dutch people, and the evils of communism. Needless to say, talks with President 1960B, of the Ukraine have been fairly amiable, if not downright pleasant. Halfway through the talks, however, the Ukrainian people began wearing their shirts inside out 'to protect from Western Curses and Infertility', something De Vries found particularly interesting, and hilarious.
Heinrich Kauffman also visited the Eastern European nation, with a majority of the transportation ministry to help the Ukrainians with rebuilding their otherwise lacking infrastructure. While not nearly as publicized as De Vries (in all fairness, it's hard to be as publicized as De Vries) Kauffman was met with an equally happy people. Many Ukrainian's, thankful for the help of the German Transportation ministry went to far as to celebrate Germany's 'victory' over Denmark, with the Prime Minister.
Iberia's ambassador to Ukraine was also met with roaring fanfare, and added a much needed boost to the Entente's pro-capitalist agenda.
While De Vries was not busy charming the entire nation of Ukraine, he was busy being the chief force of negotiations with between Germany and Denmark. In exchange for some land around Kiel, Denmark received some reparation money for the 'unwarranted' German assault, and popular elections were to be held in much of Schweslig-Holstein, to determine whether or not the region will turn German or Danish. The results, were split, causing Germany to gain some more land then it had hoped for when signing the peace accords, and the Danes keeping some land they otherwise would have lost. (+Danish, German, Dutch Happiness)
And with the recapture of Kiel, and much of Holstein, Prime Minister Kauffman was more then happy to hold 'Mission Accomplished' parades through much of Germany, going so far as to declare the day the peace accords were signed a national holiday. (+ German Happiness)
Japan too, celebrated in a similar manner, the armies military superiority over the Chinese forces they thoroughly thrashed in the Chinese War. The virtues of the Emperor (among which, is infallibility) were extolled to a great extent, with a rising air of nationalism, and anti-communism becoming present in Japanese society.
Trade ties between Japan, and several 'western' nations were also rekindled this year, with Japan taking in a lot of new Iberian customers. (+20 Iberian IP, +30 Japanese IP)
In California, a new dam, called The Sinclair Dam (after the Californian president Upton Sinclar) was built on the Colorado River, in the hopes of providing energy and power across California, which it has more then done since it's completion. Economically, the dam has brought in a lot of extra cash for the Californian government, still low on funds since the Californian War, along with extra jobs for the returning veterans. (+1 Californian EP, ++4 Californian IP)
The Romanian and Greek Communist parties have gained some support this year, though the powers of rule still remain fully with their current government.
A giant plane factory was built by the Fairchild Aircraft Company this year, in the city of Rutland, New England, with the hopes of successfully reinforcing any depleted fighter squadrons from the growing war in the region (see Military Matters.) This factory has indeed helped a bit, and has created a few jobs in the process, though with a majority of the New English populace marching off to war, this is relatively unimportant. (+40 New English IP, ++1 New English IP)
The Far-Eastern Soviet has seen some increased industrial production. Yet, no one knows why still. (++1 IP)
Representatives from Australia and New Zealand petitioned the Britsh government this year for Dominion Status. The results of the conversation are, as of now, unknown.
Iberia began holding several wargames in what was Portugal, and over the Atlantic Ocean, in the hopes of increasing their militaries fighting experience, and, well, to flex a little muscle. Experience was indeed gained, though you can't match the experiences in battle, with the artificial experienced gained in war games. Iberians were impressed though. (+Happiness)
The aging Iberian Merchant Marine began receiving some government loans to refit itself. This was just the boost the traders of the Union were hoping for. With new, modern ships, and better kept ports, Iberia began experiencing a over seas 'trade boom', something not seen in many years. (+1 Iberian EP)
In the midst of New English assaults on it's neighbor, the Martime Provinces, Canada has announced a No-Fly Zone over New England... (see Military Events)
India began refitting its factories this turn, in the hopes that it could produce more, with (hopefully) less labor in the future. With the probability that the Indian population will jump a bit with any annexation of Chinese land, this was a good plan in theory, and some industrial gain was met. Without any major government funding however, this plan didn't go neerly as far as it could have, or can. (++3 Indian IP)
The United States of the Mid-Atlantic enforced a trade embargo this turn, on the nations of Germany, Texas, New England and China. This seems to be a purely symbolic move, with those previous nations recieving few Mid-Atlantic Goods, in the wake of the wars they're currently involved in (see Military Matters). However, a shortage of some supplies was felt in Corpus Christi and Hamburg. Seeing as they themselves are going to war with New England this turn, many in the USMA congress agree that a declaration of embargo against them is redundent also. (-3 German IP, -4 Texan IP)
Parades took place in Instanbul this year, to celebrate the founding of the Union of Islamic Nations. Several fighter squadrons few by the parade, as two entire divisions of Turkish soldiers marched through the streets. (+Turkish Happiness)
Scientific Matters in 1961 A.D.
The Sitka-Quite Scientific Cooperative between the nations of Ecuador, Gran Colombia, Mexico, California, Oregon and Alaska was established this year, with all nations putting fourth money to fund scientific research in a number of fields, giving them what seems to be a fair advantage in the world's technology race.
In an attempt to rebound from the Texan War, California has continued to fund it's CASA program in Hawaii, with with Californian president promising to have a man in space sometime soon. The project just needs some funding, and it very well may go through.
Cultural Matters in 1961 A.D.
Christoofer De Vries is at it again. It's better to be Orange then Red, after all, and the Prime Minister has again allocated Dutch resources into Public Service Announcements warning the common people of the Netherlands against the hateful disease that is Communism. Wether it's going to the post office to get some mail, or simply watching T.V., posters and advertisements will make sure you know the true threat that Communism is to your daily way of life. While some of De Vries detractors has cited this as nothing more then a scare-tactic cheaply employed by the Prime Minister's supporters, it sure has led to a large body of men and women ready to strike at the scourge wherever it may appear.
In addition to 'spreading the word' about the Communist menace, a pro-military campaign has sprung up in the Netherlands also. After all, should the Red's come marching in, who are the Dutch people going to rely on to save them? The Germans? No. A large standing army is a large cornerstone of the De Vries administration's foreign policy, and the people seem to be all for it. A group of volunteer 'soldiers' has arisen, calling themselves the Dutch Freedom Guard (or Vrijheid Guard van Nederland) have begun drilling in parks and forests, with little more then hunting rifles or broomsticks.
