LK33 - Regent Challenge, Batters Cage, Unlimited players

General.... Ha Ha more like a private demoted to cook. One battle doesn't win a war and i'm all downhill from here

Such confidence from the winner of the last 3 rounds in a row!

Turns are due by Thursday, midnight, gmt - 5. Play until 310AD per the utility from Control Freak.

So far ZERO shadows turns :(
Is 20 turns becoming to much at this point?
Should we switch to 10 after this round?

Yes please. :(

I've got ten turns done and can post them. Not sure if I can get to the remaining 7 i need to get to 20. There's a lot of units and cities to manage now. Especially with expansion to the south continuing and a few acquisitions:rocket:

Game is slowing but I'm having fun and learning a lot. I would love to keep it going and ten turns sound like the trick for me. Let me know what's decided. I'll post what I have at ~15:30 GMT-5.

I won't change the current round - it will be until 310AD. I am trying to get a feel for the rounds after 310AD. So far one vote for 10 rounds.

@ControlFreak - don't post until you have the full 20. I may extended the deadline again on this round to get enough people. The next turn is leaning toward 10.

Seeing as how LK34 is finished :), I will try to get my 20 done tonight, as well as the 30 I owe in crackers game.

Hotrod

@hotrod0823

Any comments on switching this game to 10 turns a round?

I know, I can't believe how fast LK34 went ;)
Domination before tanks [dance]

That was a quick game, thanks to the many early settlers I think.

I think I will try 20 tonight but 10 may be easier as we get more units and workers etc. I know my last turn at LK34 was a long 20 turns. Will let you know tomorrow how long the 20 took.

Hotrod

10 would be much better for me, for the next few weeks my computer time is going to be limited. I will try to get my 20 turns in later this afternoon, and I think hopefully I will be able to post more promptly after the winner is determined during that time.

OK, *AFTER* 310AD the game will go to 10 turns rounds.

I already sense getting the game finished tonight won't work, so I am extending the deadline to Friday, Midnight (gmt -5)

I rushed through mine quickly too, I didn't notice that you had extended the deadline, which is a lucky thing for me, since I was past it by almost 3 hours anyway ;) LK, I would suggest the next round be 14 turns, just to get us on the best year to do 10 turns for the rest of the game. From now on, when the number of years shorten in the game, they will always do it starting with a year that ends in 50, eg, before 1750 turns are 5 years, starting at 1750 years become 2 years, so we would play from 1700 to 1750, then 1750 to 1770.

Anyway, here is my hastily played game, I probably could have conducted the wars a bit better with a little more patience.

IT: increase science to 50%, -8 gpt construction now in 7 instead of 10. We have a strong military compared to both England and Greece. Neither Greece or England are willing to ally against the other right now. Rome changed to Legionary. Sells granary. Cumae switched from courthouse to legionary (was only losing 1 shield out of 5). Neapolis cancels construction of granary, switches to legionary. Pompeii sells granary. Pisae switched from courthouse to library (only losing 2 shields out of 7). Lugdunum MMed to pull city worker out of the water and onto the spice, but added commerce/shields all lost to corruption. Paris switched from legionary to walls.

10BC Viroconium completes spearman, begins worker since it has 0 growth. Rheims autorazed, and we get a GL. Too bad, I was planning on using him for the FP in Rheims when I saw him produced. Instead build an army in Paris.

70 AD Lyons is autorazed.

110 AD research on feudalism began.

150 AD Syracuse founded on island to the SE, settler lands on the land to the East of that. Syracuse begins settler.

170 AD Orleans autorazed by our army, and the french are no more. Caesaraugusta founded, begins settler to colonize this new land.

Greece tells us to leave their land, we say goodbye.

190 AD Argos spearman defeats the first of our Legionaries, but gave his life against the second, and Argos is autorazed. Warrior defending a settler takes half of our armies health before dying.

250 Ephesus spearman holds off 3 legionaries.

260 AD Greek settler captured.

270 Mycenae captured. Athens and the Oracle are ours, at the cost of 3 legionaries.

The Americans have completed the hanging gardens in washington.

280 Our golden age has ended

290 Veii switched to palace as placeholder.

300 Super Spearman in Corinth defeats 5 legionaries.

310 Corinth captured. Argos spearman defeats 3 legionaries.

Rome just grew to size 10 and needs to be MMed or it will go into disorder. I remeber someone asking something about disorder, and LKendter saying you have a turn to notice it before the city goes into disorder, so I left it as an example. We can proabably take both greece and england out, and claim this whole continent to ourselves. I would love to take out london, it has the great library, and I have a feeling that we are a bit behind in tech compared to the other continent. Maybe not, but with America already having completed the Hanging Gardens, I think so.

Micromanagement and continuity of strategy suffered a little from trying to get the turns in before the extension was announced.:(

There were some good things and some bad things. Heres the turnlog:

IT 30BC-change lugdunum and byzantium to temples per LK. Change pompeii to barrack from granary now that we’ve got the great pyramid. Switch Virconiums spear to settler and rush for 48g due next turn. Hopefully we can grab the Iron in the mountains before Liz or Alex get there. (Liz landed in my game last round.) If not, head for the shore and hitch a ride on the galley, not much lost. Better yet, get on galley anyway to get there faster. All the other spears I leave assuming we need the defense. Construction ok, leave at 40% due in 10 turns. Lux at 10%. +10gpt.

Activate all workers in S of veii. Those tiles can’t be used til construction +aquaduct. Priorities are clear ant. jungle and road to pisae/Thermopylae. Some workers will build mine on clear road N of Pompeiis lagoon, we're currently working that unimproved tile. Theres a bunch of worker projects started that are not my first priority but I don't want to waste all the turns they put in so I let them finish and try to get them to my priorities as fast as possible. Road To Ravenna from Rome still not finished so settlers take a 5 turn detour through antium when headed south. Really want road to connect southern cities so I can drop the lux tax.

Greeks sending spears+settler north to desert. Will try to diplo “Get OUT” but if not run blockade? Is it dishonorable to block with workers. Definitely if they're French slaves. But if it’s a worker train and greece gets caught at the crossing gates for a while, who will really know. Come to think of it, a galley blockade would be great outside Neapolis too.

1) 10BC-Antium, Pompeii blt legionary, ord same. Neapolis blt granary ord galley for blockade. Viroconium blt settler, ord spear. Someone's Iron just appeared in the hills by Veii, bonus! Stack of legions wakened and moved from Paris toward next conquest. Slaves moved to borders on their way to Pisae, acting as a freight train:rolleyes:. Legion by furs takes detour towards Orleans to help join the train. No need to tell Alex to get out yet. Farthest Legion within reach attacks french warrior N of Paris and becomes elite. 2 workers sent to road tile NW of Pomeii for mining. 3 to Jungle NE of Pisae, remaining join pompeiis partial clearing before heading to Antium. Legions south will go to Thermoply for attack on Oreleans if necessary. Viro Settler heads to hill by fish. Pompeii switched to galley due in 3 to help relocate settlers, Rome settler due in 1. Thermoply entertainer changed to taxman. Same for Paris.

2) 10AD-French send archer from Lyons. Greek settler veers NW and heads to gap in borders S of Paris. Could be heading for Iron NW of Paris too. Greeks don’t have Iron yet. Rome blt settler switches to worker factory for a bit. Pisae blt courthouse, start temple. Legionary dispatches pitiful archer. Rheims taken, lost 1 legionar to 3 spears. As the walls come crumbling down I realize how smart Greece has been and how Stupid I have been. Large gap opens as Rheims is razed (pop of 1, no choice). Need to get some settlers up here before Orleans goes. Romes settler headed to Paris. Captured workers to paris to wait for settler. Legions shoulder to shoulder to ward off greek settlers in mountians until Rheims rebuilt.

3) 30AD-French warrior comes north from orleans. Veii blt legionary, ord same. Sci 30/20 for hispalis happiness. Must finish road soon to bring lux here. Rome blt worker, damn, wanted to go back to settlers. Oh well, extra worker helps too. Veii legionary, ord same. Antium lost pop to disease. Rome worker sent to clear jungle in Ant. Pisae MM to grow. Workers start clearing N. Elite legion sent to paris for heal. All rest form blockade on mtns. Unit cost is starting to hurt. 43gpt. Orange border appears in S, Iron is their 2nd radius. Trade territory map for Liz TM and Alex WM +1g. Dover on silks on coast SE of Iron. Still room for one more if we hurry.

4) 50AD Disease again! Ant blt legionary order spear. France almost dead and legions don’t upgrade. Pompeei blt galley, start marketplace. Hispalis blt court, start market. Nea blt galley ord galley. Elite kills french warrior but no leader. Lots of goto moves in progress. Neapolis' new galley starts blockade S of town. More moves. Pom galley ignores barb and heads to rome.

5) 70AD-Barb galley attacks and sinks. More moves. Realize workers could start road to Oreleans to help troop movement, "Getup slave, come with me!"

6) 90 AD Veii blt legionary, start market. Continue movement toward Orleans, while keeping shoulder to shoulder on mtns, waiting for Settler. Warrior sees hut on east island. Hire Hispalis entertainer since 6th worker only gets food and can’t grow past 6 anyway. Viro Settler board galley for ride past Greek,English peninsula.

7) 110AD- French request audience, Joan wants peace. They wont give up Lyons so <Soup-Nazi voice of Seinfeld>No peace for you</SNVOS>. Rome blt settler, ord galley to wait for pop get back up. Must have not MM for food. Ant spear, ord horse. Nea. blt galley, ord galley. Ravena blt spear, ord worker. Spear sent to Virconium. Galleys start going 2 turns into sea on their travels S. Realize there's coast NE of Rome but need to suicide to reach it. Hut gives a horseman. Settler waits in Brundsium for galley next turn.

It was late so I save my game. Getting back into it I say WTH! I'm building markets in two of my key military producing cities. Pompeii and Veii. I'm at war! I don't even have enough troops to attack Lyons. It must have been very late last night. Market in Hispalis is Ok as road will be done soon and 6 citizens needs lots of happiness. Also Galleys aren't blocking choke point until they're at the Byzantium cross over.

veii, pompeii to legionary lose 6 sheilds. Sci 30/10 construction in 5 -3gpt. Tell Alex to Get out. Trade TMs.

8) 130AD-Greeks ignored me and kept walking. Let them go, We're coming for them next. Found Syracuse on old Rheims site, ord temple. Found Caesaraugustus by Fish. Lots of overlap here including with greece. Workers moved to pompeii stack. Legions approach Lyons or Orleans, whichever is closer. Fire entertainer in Hispalis.

9) 150AD-Veii blt legionary, ord horseman. Continue as above. Island fully explored. Fortified legions waiting for attack on Orleans.

10) 170AD-Rome blt galley start settler. Neapolis finish galley, start library to improve our research and add culture pressure to greece. Probably will change this. Pompeii finish legion start horseman. Ravenna finish worker starts barracks. Clear more jungle. Galley attempts suicide run from Rome. Galley 1 turn from Settle near Dover. Alex got Construction, we'll get it next turn.

11) 190AD-Construction done, feudalism ord, new age begins. Ant blt horse, ord horse. Cumae blt worker ord spear. Lutia blt spear ord harbor. Galley sinks.:( Kill archer. Lots of typical moves. Settler moves to hill by Iron. Found next turn.

12) 210AD-Veii blt horse ord settler. Pompeii blt horse start great lighthouse, that extra galley move can get across sea NE of Rome. Hastings only has three civ and little growth. Could use extra galley move. Start attack on Orleans, found Palmyra, ord temple. Orleans capture and NOT razed. Why was I waiting for a settler? Start temple. Attack Lyons. taken with loss of one legion, razed. French are no more. We're at peace. Fan out remaining troops to search desert. Antium changed to spear. Nea. changed to market.

13) 230AD-Resistance ends in Orleans. Pisae blt temple, ord Market. Hispalis blt market start aquaduct. Workers start new mines. Settler sent to Desert fish. Legions sent to Paris, Syracuse and Veii. Neapolis changed to library. Theres a lot of trade along the river. This should help reasearch and add culture pressure.

14) 250AD-Rome blt settler, ord settler. Orleans disorder.:( Joan whipped here and civ still remembers. Hire scientist. Ant blt spear ord spear. Sent to Neapolis. Settler sent to Lutia for ride on ferry. Change Rome to worker factory. We need more roads. 30/10 feudalism in 17 -4gpt.

15) 260AD-Rome blt worker, ord galley to let population recover to 6. Veii blt settler, ord library, lots of gold from furs and good size potential. Cumae blt spear ord aquaduct to let pop recover. Ravenna blt barracks, ord harbor. English start Great wall. Move galleys at sea crossing to SW corner. More effective here, only need 2 galleys on corner to force 3 turns in Sea tiles to go around.

16) 270AD-Ant blt spear, ord spear, sent to Hispalis. Virconium blt spear, sent to Caesaragustus, order wrkr. Jerusalem founded on Island with bg, horse and fish, ord temple. Galley with horseman aboard gos to next land E. Virconium and Byzantium hire sci. Lux tax would go to high to fix this. Note that Byzantium will starve in 10 turns if scientist doesn't work. Paris sci fired.

17) 280AD-Nea blt library, ord worker. AMERICANS complete hanging garden. Move settlers towards Desert Pennisula. Land Horse on E land. Explore. Galleys create blockade but English galley has slipped past before in place.

18) 290AD-End of golden age. Brundsium disorder. Damnit. hire scientist for now. min Sci dropped to 0/10 fued in 33 with 2 scientists! Disband a few legions in Orleans to reduce overhead and help with temple. Some warriors disbanded but most are the only unit in outlying towns. Need to start rotating units and getting rid of excess. What am I doing wrong trying to gain wealth?

19) 300AD-Ant and Viro blt spear, worker, ord spears. Order restore in brund, blt spear, ord worker. Ant spear to Rome. Viros workers start road before mine to bring lux and get rid of specialist. Caesarea founded on old Lyons spot, ord spear. Looks like Next Island is fertile and empty also. Trade maps: TM for WM +1g

20) 310AD-Rome blt galley, ord settler. Finish exploring E Island.

Unlike shdwlord, I opted for peacetime and infrastructure building. Librarys in the bigger cities, markets in the midsize cities, temples on the borders. Settlers still heading for E Islands. The Great Lighthouse started and will beat Hastings but I don't know about the other two civs. If we get it, Rome coastline won't be a suicide run anymore. First city on island, more to come. Workers starting to free us from the jungle. Hispalis might be a good spot for FP, with later palace move when we start conquering greece and england.

Having problems raising cash. I know we have a lot of units but don't really want to disband them all. Suggestions are welcome.

I like shdwlords goal of easy time points. Hope I can get 14 turns in without rushing;) .

Hey LKendter

I just finished reading up to the last round of games and thought I'd have a go to see how I'd fare. I played the 20 turns from your last save in the other thread and have just finshed playing and writing the turn report.

I'll post the report and saved game shortly.

Zenga

Well, this was quite some game to pick up. I took a good while to get my bearings before deciding on any moves, then played as follows:

30BC(0)

Switch Paris entertainer>taxman, Lugdunum spear>worker, Byzantium spear>worker, Virconium ent>tax, Thermopylae ent+citizen>tax (shortage - no extra shields or gold from farming, decide to starve to 1 and take gold until then), Antium upgrade vet warrior>legion.

Switch Rome settler>temple, keep granary for now. Neapolis granary>library. Move 4 legion to mountain outside Rheims.

Pisae makes courthouse, start temple.
Vet legion attacks reg spear and wins, 2nd vet legion attacks reg spear and wins>elite, elite legion attacks reg spear and wins - Rheims destroyed. Greek settler/hoplite pair in area near spices, decide to use a captured worker for a colony in meantime to see if luxury tax can be lifted (no!). Need settler, switch Antium legion>settler.
Check with Liz and Alex (both now cautious after auto-raze), trade TMs with Liz, TM for WM with Alex. France wants peace but can't afford it.

30AD(3)

Veii makes legion, start library.Move 2 legion towards Lyons. Defeat warrior near Paris and one coming from Orleans.
Liz now annoyed (gift her TM), Alex still cautious (gift TM)

Legions destroy Lyons. France has one size 1 city in jungle surrounded by other civs. Decide to make peace, they only had 9 gold but they're going nowhere.

70AD(5)

Rome makes temple, start library, sell granary. Pompeii, sell granary.Paris switch taxman>irrigated grass (grows in 7), switch legion>temple in build.

90AD(6)

Virconium makes worker, start court. Byzantium worker, harbour (worker roads grass then harvests forest to hurry harbour). Warrior on SE isle pops hut and gets barbs.

110AD(7)

Warrior wins and is elite. Neapolis makes library, start settler. Ravenna spear, temple. Lugdunum worker, temple (worker harvests forest silks then roads to Byzantium). Switch Brundisium spear>worker (due in 1).
Greeks settle near spice colony. Moved settler near other spice. Move legion from colony and harrass another settler/hoplite pair.
Reduce science>30% (Construction in 3), +9gpt. Liz and Alex still pissed off and stay that way for the rest of my turns.

130AD(8)

Hispalis riots due to growth and no spice, set taxman. Brundisium makes worker, start temple.Switch Lutetia to court. Settle Syracuse on SE isle, start harbour.
Construction in 1, reduce science. Greece has it for WM + 35g, declined.

280AD(17)

Neapolis makes galley, start colosseum, assign entertainer. Caesaraugusta worker, temple - worker set to road jungle spice before clearing. Palmyra worker, temple. Americans build Hanging Gardens.
Science reduced to 40% ( Feudalism in 1), +11gpt.

290AD(18)

Golden Age ends.Never got Feudalism! Still due in 1, science dropped again to 20%, +11gpt.
Rome riots, assign entertainer and taxman.

300AD(19)

Feudalism! Start Engineering at 30%, -1gpt (22 turns). Thermopylae riots after growth, assign taxman. Land settler on 1st isle SE.
Look for buyers for Feudalism, no deals happening.

310AD(20)

Land settler on 2nd isle SE. Settler on 1st isle SE in Syracuse. Assign taxman in Paris.

End of turn

Diplomacy
England (annoyed)- only offer WM + 16g for Feudalism.

France (furious) - 0g, 1 city, no Maths, Code of Laws or Lit.
Have not traded WM to anyone, no trade route to Greece and England.

Treasury
82g, +8gpt.

Research
Engineering in 18 turns.

I held back in destroying France for a couple of reasons. First I forgot about the auto-raze of size 1 cities and thought it might effect relations with Liz and Alex even more, it made no difference. Second, at the time they would have been taken out there were a lot of Greek settlers on the prowl and I figured they would just settle there. As it turns out, that would probably have been for the best, since they ended up settling near the only roaded spice. France are basically land-locked and can be taken out at will, the city is now size 2 and will save building a settler for the area.
Larger cities (size 6 and above) are flirting with rioting and needed a lot of watching. For this reason I never started any aqueducts.
No deals were made in the last turn.

Edit: Not sure if the file uploaded OK.

War with Greece
There are 2 archers outside Athens border that can be taken. Troops heading for Argos then Athens. Some of the legion nearly ready were earmarked for the 2 Greek cities on southern peninsula.

Diplomacy
England (annoyed)- Trade route to England just opened. Only worthwhile deal is maybe for wines(WM + 13g).
Greece (furious) - Alex offers 34g + 6gpt for peace. Won't give Monotheism or cities, not worth it yet.
Have not traded WM.

Treasury
124g, +7gpt.

Research
Engineering in 14 turns at 40%.

No deals were made in the last turn.

I thought that after the last round I'd better check out the aims first and seeing that this included taking workers I probably attacked before I normally would in such a situation. As a result although 6 workers were gained I only took 2 cities and was looking anxiously at the southern peninsula where 2 cities were only protected by warriors.
Although Feudalism was researched, I never started Sun Tzu's (although a few turns could be saved by switching one of the city builds). I would have preferred to build in a river city but any population growth would have to be offset by luxury tax since none of the likely sites had both temple and market. The other option would have been to reduce the science rate, but with the other civs not yet discovered including scientific and industrious ones I didn't like this choice. The best bet looks like a market in Neapolis or Ravenna then Sun Tzu.
If I was playing a regular game I would probably only stay at war and take another couple of Greek cities (until they gave the tech) before concentrating on infrastructure and research for a while.

Oh, the GLH is due in 3!:D

:king: After winning last round I decided to take a round off.

I WISH.

:( Actually, the truth is I wanted to consolidate my victory with another one but RL got in the way. Not much gaming for me and an extension wouldn't help since I'm on a plane this afternoon and wont be back until next Tuesday. Hope enough others submit to keep the game going until I get back.

Take out with Greece for me!:rocket:
