Lunar Base?

So, a couple cow squares, maybe a wheat or two, and one or two luxuries within two squares?

Aw, c'mon, I know I wasn't the only one thinking it... :p

I was waiting for such picture to pop up... curse you!

Without a river you can't expand beyond population 6? Unless you built an adequate...but how would that work?

Maybe, but there's a chance to see oil pop-up later in the game...

at least its always tundru, and not like the virus that's infected the equator, where the terrain cant decide if its tundra or desert, and ends up being neither.

Ok, we've had our fun (me included). Let's get back on topic.

I don't believe a lunar base will be reality in my lifetime. Or yours. It's too expensive and dangerous for human settling and it has little revenue, if at all. It can only be used for launching rockets further into space due to the lower gravity on the moon. But to be able to launch rocets from the moon, you need a huge investment to get it all up there.

i think a lunar base is way more "soon to come" then rik. i dont think it will be the type of moon base where large numbers of people can go live for decades, but more like the International space station, just a little bigger and more stable.
a few astranauts, and a rich tourist or two, and that's it.

as for being profitable, i think that depends a LOT on what its allowed to do. if it can hold a few weapons, then its worth it for any military (doubt anything could shoot down a missle comming down from far in space).

dont know what the moon is made of, but mining it might be worth while.

and then there's always the advertizing potential, the nike simbol on the moon, or the pepsi logo. bet they'd pay a prety penny for that.

I say go for it. Make it an international project. Get every country involved.

Then, as the lunar base gets bigger, grown into a city, we'll have Earth humans and moon humans. Then we can band together as Earth humans to hate moon humans (and visa versa), so maybe we'll stop hating each other down here. And the moon is too far away for a war, so it'll just be a mutual hatred at a safe distance. yeah, that's the ticket.

I think it would be really fantastic to see it built. I doubt it will happen, but it would be cool anyway.

It would be expensive at first, but the payoff would be great if we got a mining operation up there to mine Hydrogen 2 (isotope 2). Supposedly more efficient than oil and the moon seems to have abundant ammounts. It would be great profit if someone can achieve a monopoly on it.

I think a lunar base is a good long term investment; however, we must really trim this gigantic deficit before we even attept it.

Folks, it doesn't have to be profitable if its a government project. Do you think the United States makes money off the space shuttle? Do you think anyone is building a moneybank because of the ISS?

Certainly not.

2019 - Lunar Base construction begins
2025 - Lunar Base becomes fully operation
2034 - Lunar Base becomes a depot for the disposal of nuclear waste on the dark side of the moon
2040 - Catastrophic explosion cause moon to escape orbit, decimating the Earth!

It could happen! :p

I still think we should build a space elevator. It would surely be a prerequisite for profitable moon-mining.

having a lunar base would be awsome it would help with astrronimical studies

Equally important, in the permanently shadowed depths of craters around the lunar north pole, water ice may lurk, according to previous but unconfirmed observations.

Melted, it would be vital for drinking. Broken into hydrogen and oxygen, the water could provide breathable air and be used to make rocket fuel for a trip to Mars.

You mean we don't have enough rocket fuel on Earth? Since when?

@Pasi: it's quite expensive to lift any mass to space. The energy will be cheaper in space as well.

Not so sure it's wise to spend the water on fuel though, unless there are very much of it.
