[GS] Māori Discussion Thread

First thing I thought after watching the video... "Wow they look really fun, can't wait to try them out."

Second thought almost instantly... "They have to be buffing Norway.... right?"

Yeah hopefully Norways is amongst the reworked civs.

As for Maori, they are looking so fun to play, kinda feels like a mix of Polynesia and Spain from civ V, I don't mind the loss of great writing slots if it means I get to focus on exploration to settle natural wonders before anyone else. I can recall many games were Eisfalkuyeakkjakul spawns on its own island, I can imagine settling it with Maori will be nuts.

Also the devs mentiones they update te world generation algorythm hopefuly it means there will be more archipielagos for Maori to take advantage off.

And as a animator, I can't help to be amazed at the quality in Animation for Kupe, I'll take this leaderscreens over civ 5 any day.

Not getting Great Writers is a double penalty: not only don't the Maori get them, it means more GWs for other Civs, boosting their Tourism.

Looks like the Maori make up for this in the late game, as post Tourism every tile with a feature gets +2 Tourism. Note this one is for "features", not "passable features".
Their National Parks will be phenomenal though since all features get +2 tourism after Flight

Can I say that I am 100% here for the Maori Musical Score

The oldest known canals were irrigation canals, built in Mesopotamia circa 4000 BC, in what is now Iraqand Iran. The Indus Valley Civilization, Ancient India, (circa 2600 BC) had sophisticated irrigation and storage systems developed, including the reservoirsbuilt at Girnar in 3000 BC.[4] In Egypt, canals date back at least to the time of Pepi I Meryre (reigned 2332–2283 BC), who ordered a canal built to bypass the cataract on the Nile near Aswan.[5] - Wikipedia

Looks like the developers stretched it a tiny bit.

I rather get them as center building from ancient tech, on cities near a body of water or coast, than from turn 1 just for settled.

On a TSL map, Maori should just skip New Zealand and head north to settle the first city at the Great Barrier Reef! That would be a powerful start.
Well Piopiotahi is a good option as well. Make sure one of them is on the TSL Map in the first place. If one isn't go the other way.

My thoughts exactly. Pearl of the Danube seems like a better Iteru, this Civ has a better Knarr. I sense some power creep going on...

I think they mentioned Egypt is getting bonus fertility from floods? (needed and it suits them). Maybe Norway could get increased efficency from Sea trade?

Yeah, and then make a second dash to Uluru, before sending a third settler to Piopiotahi long before Australia gets the chance.
Good grief!

Yes, I get it, we had some quite bright ancestors. But... look again at that canal at 0:36 mark and remember that the guys don't even know yet how to put two bricks together at that precise moment :)

As cool as it is, I am a bit disappointed that the Toa can build Pas like the Roman legions do forts. In the case of legions that is something their armies trained hard to be able to do - erect and tear down forts in a day. Pas were a permanent fortification.

I'm guessing Thursday's livestream is going to involve having viewers pick the best starting location.

If so, we need to encourage them to explore as much as possible so the might reveal new city-states and natural wonders.

Also, we should get a glimpse of the civics tree.

I love that they included "cannot harvest resources" not just for flavor, but also to prevent the Toa from becoming the Legion, but better.
I was thinking of overflow chopping out a couple of quick galleys (or 10) and taking out the nearest 2 civs on island maps. Then I realized I couldn't do it.
