MAF! Who wants the saved game functions in the SDK?

Nevs new savegame method is apparently included in VISA mod. The VISA team says it reduces MAF by 90%. I am trying to work out answers regarding to have this new savegame method available without the VISA mod so that you can use it without any mod at all or with any mod.

Basically I asked about it in the VISA forum :)

Hope a fix is coming. The MAF is killing me!

Firaxis should fix this. If budget is a problem increase the price of the game. I for one would pay more for a better quality game with less issues. Although I must say, I think Firaxis has been doing pretty well with Civ IV.

Wow this is great! so many differant members even after all this time where many have already addressed this a left but yet still new ones arrive daily! How many alltoghter when you think the number is divided up in 'Bugs' and 'Tech support' and even C+C threads! its mind boggling when you think of all the people whodon;t know about this place but are know doubt expierencing the issues.

This is just horrendous blundering of new precendent proportions. PLease everyone I urge you all to place you name on this line with the same stories they can;t ignore you in numbers like this. I love seemin get a good scold'n

I'm experiencing MAFs at a game breaking frequency now. I'm really considering not to buy the next expansion because of this. There is no support what so ever from Take2 or Fireaxis.

If you see a MAF window, the game craches, and Windows starts complaining about the lack of virtual memory, try increasing your paging file (or how it is called in English version of Windows). I did that and no MAF's for me. (I have 512 RAM).

I'm seen the memory allocation error before, but I also see something else that seems to be similar/related, as it happens on the huge maps. At any point in the game, if I save and reload, I often (but not always) will see the game semi-freeze as soon as it comes up from load. This only happens in multi-player. By semi-freeze, I mean that its as if the game were paused. I can navigate around, click on items, enter the city screen, but can't get any units to move and the timer stays put. Has anyone seen this before? Is it the same as or related to the memory allocation?

3.9 gb of RAM, crashed at first turn and then the fourth after I reduced my settings

heres a better save, memory allocation failure while saving a huge map

Wow. Nice thread necro. ;)

I think you'll have better luck finding an answer in the tech support forum.

necro??

been there, no help:(
A "necro" is to revive a dead thread, and it's sort of a forum don't. This one is over two years since the last post.

Let me see if I can help. A MAF is usually caused by a few things, but it all boils down to the same thing: The OS has run out of memory for Civ, and the game sees the allocation fault and can't recover, so it shuts down to keep from reading or writing in the OS's protected memory space, or a location that it shouldn't access. Basically, it sends out an error code, and Windows shuts it down because it has violated the "rules."

MAF's usually happen on very large maps in the late-ish part of the game. There are many civs, with many units in play, and that means that the game has to keep track of a whole bunch of units, animations, moves, textures, etc., etc., ad nauseum. The game eventually just loses track of something, and presto! A MAF occurs.

Civ also has a memory leak. The more you play, the more RAM is used up and not subsequently freed, until the game begins to bog down on smaller worlds, and MAF on larger ones. This can happen even more quickly when playing a very large mod on a huge world.

So now that I have explained the why, I need to ask some questions:

1. Are you using a mod? Which one?
2. What OS are you using?
3. How much memory does your PC have? What kind is it?
4. How much memory does your graphics card have? What kind is it?
5. Is this vanilla, Warlords, or BTS?
6. Have you checked any of the system temperatures as you play? Is something getting too hot?

I'll check back later tonight, or tomorrow, k?

1.Rise of Empires
2.Vista Service Pack 2 4GB RAM, 32bit OS
3. 89.2GB of 465GB, 3000-4095MB range for paging file/virtual memory(I know I should have more but this is the max available)
4. 1819MB graphics memory, GEForce 8600GT(Omega)
5. BTS 3.19
6.no...I don't really know how to check temperature...
2.33Ghz processor speed if that helps....:mischief:

Hmmmm, let's see...

1. Rise of Empires is a pretty big mod, with a lot of things going on. On a huge world, I'm not surprised that you get a MAF.
2. The OS is fine. I assume that you're running the game as Administrator?
3. The size of the hard disk and paging file are irrelevant. No problems there.
4. Your graphics card seems to be more than capable.

6. Checking your temperatures involves installing a utility like Speedfan. Google it if you wish. It works rather nicely.

The bottom line is basically that the mod might be too large to comfortably play huge worlds. You may have to scale back a little in order to play the mod without crashing. I have an absolutely insane system (see my profile if you dare), and I can't play huge maps with the new BAT (which is also very large) without a MAF or two in the late game.

It's just a fact of life when playing with large mods. You might try asking the question in the RoE forum. Someone there may have a workaround, or a strategy to deal with the problem.

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to give you a better fix, but there really isn't a "band-aid" solution for this. :(

would getting a computer with a better processor and windows 7 help?
my GPU is at 64 C, System 78 C, and AUX 125 C. Im assuming the little flame next to them is a bad thing :(

No, it probably wouldn't help much. It's a limitation of the game engine, mostly.

And those temperatures are a little high. It looks like something is being mis-read if you ask me. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in them. If you're using Speedfan for the readings, you can get motherboard templates from the Speedfan site.
