Massive C2C Humans Vs Humans Game/Lets Play Setup

Edit - oops, sry for the old style voting - hope you can add them up ok Also, I'll probably do a blog-style reporting with textual storyline style and some pictures, so count me as a casual let's player for the purposes of this game.
Grrr.. it no problem. It's just a long drawn out 15 minute process to add each new persons votes :( since you are doing a lets play of some sort this makes up for it ;).

1. How are the emails sent? I ask this because the email I have with this forum has my real name in it and so if I have to give out my email I'd make a new email address for this game.
This should answer your questions very well... Nobody can see your email and when a player has their turn and presses enter then the game will automatically send the next person an email with the file to alert them that its their turn...

2. How long is the setup process going to go? IE, how long will we wait before filling the remaining slots with AIs?
I haven't decided yet... I am just waiting to see if any of the youtube lets players will be joining us.... Quill18 too hopefully!

3. Will this be a continuous SVN deal? or will we stick with a version the whole game?
Well here's what I think... We should always be playing the latest full release. E.g. V27 or v28 when it comes out. I would say a new version of the full game will come out every 50 turns or so which means at that rate the last few players might really actually get into space once its developed unless of course everyone is dead by then...

I'd be willing to try this and see how far it goes
Ok but unfortunately you used the old voting method... Sadly it seems the new voting method will be too complicated to maintain so ill remove my post about the new method and go back to the old one. It will take a while to add up all those votes though :( incase your wondering about things not completly adding up... My own votes are added into them yet I didn't officially reply listing my votes so that's why there are some more +1s and -1s.

I still think SVN is the best choice (it means we have a permanent record of saves that way too so we can bug-fix off them later). All PBEM requires is some way to send save games around, not necessarily actually email per se.
Should we have an svn version of the whole game with the full version of v27 and the correct bug settings and option for this game? That way people can just have a folder which they right click to update to the latest version for this game and don't have to worry about maintaining different settings in their games or worrying about when to update.

Sorry to have a sudden change of heart about this, but I'm going to have to bow out of this, for reasons which shall remain undisclosed.

Best of luck to you all.
Oh :( ok I'll remove you from the list when I get a chance...

Usually resignations are handled by turning your nation over to an AI player. I'd really prefer that result as it maintains the game's 'integrity' really. Besides, as a player, sometimes being gifted cities far off in the distance is a BAD thing, and having an opponent resign, giving all his cities to opponents I haven't even met yet, is another imbalancing element. Much better to just leave a new AI in the game in your wake.
Ah ok we will do that then :)

Just a note... I would love if it at least 1 person other than myself was also doing a video lets play with commentary.

Here's how you do it:

1. Open fraps, and choose a start/stop recording hokey (only needs to be choosen once)
2. Open your save game
3. Once it loads press the start recording hockey (mine is f6)
4. Once you've had your turn press the stop recording hockey (my is also f6)
5. Save and quit the game preferably without moving the screen around so the videos join up nicely.
6. All videos will be stored as short video clips in your computer, you don't need to do anything with them yet.
7. After 10 turns or whatever I set the official turn count for each epsiode just drag those videos from the folder into movie maker and then click make movie to have movie maker join them all together into a single episode.
8. Upload the joined video that movie maker created to youtube
9. (Optional: if the movie file is too large download handbreak and convert it to an mp4 video. This usually halfs the amount of space the video takes up on your computer so it will be much faster to upload.)

So really all you are doing opening fraps before you open the game then pressing record when you start your turn and stop recording when you finish it. Then you just need to join and upload it every 10 turns, simple ;)

Btw should we set all episodes to 10 turns to make it simple? It is gunna most likely be an epic game speed after all seeing how the votes are going...

@12padams

If I did not say it before (I thought I said in the other thread) I would like to do a screenshot thread type of Let's Play. Please update my status in the first post.

Apart from setting up an account for uploading the vidoes to some place, plus the time it takes to upload.
I think text +screens if perfectley fine for Civ games.
For a shooter, or let´s say things like Assasins Creed, video is way better.. but round based strategy does not have that many moments that you can´t put into static pictures.

Edit: yeah.. Startign Era Prehistoric. I also forgot to vote on that since i thought it obvious

About the episode intervalls: I think we should leave the option open to change it to 5 turn intervalls later in the game. In industrial or modern era 10 turns can be a looong time, especially with a war going on.

Edit:

I'm in, although I don't know as to when.
Currently my laptop is in for repairs for the DC jack, since my adapter is fine by the looks of it.

Either way, I'd be willing to do a game, and a "Let's Play" of the game in progress as we go.

World type
Perfect Mongoose +1 (I tend to like the abundance of resources in generates.)
Start in Old World +1 (For good ol' Old world fun)

Gigantic - +1 (Doesn't matter to me)

Temperate - +1 (Pretty standard)

Era:
Prehistoric +1 (No point otherwise)

Advanced start -1 (Just no. Should be self explanatory)
No city razing Indifferent
No city flipping from culture - Indifferent
City flipping after conquest Indifferent
No barbarians -1 (No barbarians, no animals results which is a core gameplay mechanic of the early game)
Raging barbarians +1 (WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! FEAR THE HORDE! )
Aggressive AI -1 (Makes for a good early game, but hinders them as the game progresses.)
Unrestricted leaders +1 (I'm okay if it doesn't, but it is rather fun)
Random personalities -1
Choose religions -1 (no, doesn't mesh with GP founding religion option that I enjoy)

No tech brokering +1 (Should not be allowed)
Permanent alliance -1 (More diplomatic fun)
Always war -1
Always peace -1

Advanced diplomacy +1
Unlimited wonders +1

Assimilation +1
Final five -1
High to low -1

Culturally linked starts -1
Personalized maps +1 (It shall be interesting, I always enjoy this... since it is a custom map. Fun for all!)
Advanced economy +1
Realistic culture spread +1
Larger cities without metropolitan administration -1 (Rigs early high culture/growth cities, and it done by a later tech and building associated)
Realistic corporations +1
Barbarians always raze +1 (WAAAAAAGH!, if it wasn't apparent I like an aggressive barbarian game :P)
United Nations +1 (Definitely if we don't play with the 'Diplomacy' victory condition, it adds a little extra to the game. Should be interesting among players.)
Advanced espionage +1 :D
Modern corporations +1
Advanced nukes +1 :D
Divine Prophets (+1, -2) +1 (I enjoy this option... granted an in house rule could state, no more than 3 holy sites in a city)

Maybe we can set up a PTT (push to talk) Ventrillo (or similar program) chat going on?

There's an onboard method for that in Civ... hit the space button to open up a message dialogue to all players. You can message to a specific player via trade screen too.

Yeh, it works real well in a play by email game ;)

How do you do diplomacy in an e-mail game?

It'd work just like a hotseat game I would think. You initiate the trade screen and it gives you all the usual options but you select what you want to offer and what you want for it and send the offer. When the other player loads the game and begins his turn he'll see the trade screen popup asking if he accepts the offer. If he wishes to change the offer, he will resend a new offer to you in the process.

I figure the chat messages will show up like game messages at the top of the screen when one has been sent to all.

So how specifically do we want to set this up from a server perspective? I would vote against using the development SVN, as that would become confusing and make it harder to find actual changes there. Would it be possible to set up a Google Docs or Skydrive for this and have the game send the saves there? Do you have any other ideas?

Nice to have you onboard Joe!

Perfect Mongoose - No if earth type, Yes if not.
That'd be a yes then.

If you mean Randomly selected leaders for everyone then Yes
It means removing the connection between the leader and the civilization. Not a very important point here as we can rename our civs and leaders however we like and the civ only determines the base culture access now.

Also:
We have new categories here so for those (some of which I didn't realize WERE options) my votes should be tallied as:

No Vassals- Yes
No Alliances- Don't care
Sea Tunnels- Yes
Hide Unbuildable Worker actions- Should be up to player
Hide Unbuildable Build option - Should be up to player
Hide Obsolete Worker action - Should be up to player
Hide Obsolete Build options - Should be up to player

I have to let Hydro have a chance at beating up on me somehow. :mischief: As I beat up on him here all the time. ;)

Goodness, the whole team's getting in on this. You guys will be so busy playing, no work will be done for v28, haha!

"Help! There's lots of bugs, and my settlers can't found cities, and the game keeps crashing whenever I try to change my era, and....Hey, are you listening?!"

Hydro: "Huh..? Oh, yeah..." "Okay, now Vorkarya, I'll give you iron, but only if you promise to squash Joseph's Tengrii capitol. Then I'll corrall his precious navy into Koshling's hidden war galley horde, and..."

I do feel kind of like poor Joe's gonna get picked on and bullied, as game, as forum though, hahaha. Joseph, promise you'll use your experience in the faster speeds to put up a good fight, won't you?
