McAfee anti-virus recently reported that certain old versions of terran.exe and terran.icd on my system contained trojans. Apparently this started when McAfee introduced a new heuristics-based system called Artemis. The virus scan quarantined these files, making them unusable. Clearly, these readings are false positives.
The good news is that the files in question are outdated versions of the SMAC files. (Current versions of the files are not detected as trojans.) I tend to keep old versions of files to help troubleshooting. So, if anyone who uses McAfee anti-virus has a problem running SMAC, you might have been using an old version and you need to apply the most recent patches, which may be found here.
SMAX is not affected.
