Medieval European Mod II 2016-10-05

Hey,
It is not possible to load a settler into Currach (as civilopedia says, it's only a small exploration boat that can carry military foot units). There's even no load icon - the icon that is in the same place, however, is "Join City"... which would explain where your settler went!

I can't believe I've made such a school boy error  (maybe I was confused by the new icon set?). There was no alcohol involved at the time either, honest. Thanks for the explanation though.

I've tried to play, but the game keeps hanging, says it can't find the national wonder icons "Icon_GM_King_of_England". Where are those files supposed to be, since I can't find them either?

This is an error you get if you've installed the mod in the wrong folder, or into a new folder instead of doing it directly into Conquests/Scenarios. You should have unzipped it to your Conquests/Scenarios folder so that it has "MEM" (and not for instance "mem-1.0") folder and three BIQ files. (I assume you've downloaded the big 260 mb file)

BTW just so you (as in, you who reads this thread) know. I'm adding all the HYW previews to the third post, so it's possible to get a good overview, if you fancy screenshots. ;)

Nice mod, If I may make a suggestion, Bohemia would be better represented by War Wagons than the houfnice, I mean who wouldn't want to charge around in an early tank?:) And they were actually a bigger part of Zizka's strategy than the houfnices.

I am well aware, but there's no War Wagon unit available (I posted a request myself some time ago).

This thread is growing fast.

just a thought: what if you gave crusaders a movement cost of 2 or even 3, since itll take forever to get to the 'holy land'. just a thought :crazyeye: :)

What a completely fantastic mod! I tried out England in the large Europe version and it looks like it will take months to finish! But who cares when there's this much detail to enjoy. Love the new diplomacy text, the multitude of flavour units, the complexity of the tech tree, the feeling of being immersed in the medieval period and quite simply because it is such a great challenge. Truly excellent work, thank you embryodead and Yoda!

Gushing praise wouldn't be right without noting a couple of niggles though!

There isn't any Timber resource in Britain, which for an island famed for its ship construction must be an oversight. Also, the upgrade path from Pikeman to Billman doesn't work as the upgrade from Billman to Swiss Mercenary is pre-empted. The Swiss Mercenary is available way before the Billman/Halberdier. A smaller quibble may be that "Swiss" Mercenary is a little too specific and "Mercenary" Pikeman maybe better.

From what I've read on two papers on JSTOR, British Isles were one of the least forested areas in Europe already in the Middle Ages. There was already shortage of wood (coal was used very early instead); and quality timber was often imported from Sweden and other Baltic countries (from which most of the Age of Sail timber came). If you need timber when playing as the English, trade with Novgorod, Sweden, possibly Lithuania and Poland. Those were the major exporters of timber at that time, and so are on that map. At the same time, you have plenty of wool trade. In other words, we tried to simulate the Middle Ages trade on that map.

The upgrade from Pikeman to Billman works, it's just that Billman is worse than Swiss Pikeman so it also upgrades to it. But even if you have the Gold resource and the Swiss at your disposal, you will still get Billmen from conscription. I know the Swiss come earlier, but it's a special unit, for the Gold is resource is very rare. There's none in Britain, too.

It's an idea to consider to rename the Swiss to a generic Mercenary, though it would be sad to have no Swiss representation in the mod, since they have a special place in the history of warfare.

Thanks for all the comments :)

Reg. crusaders, yes they're supposed to reach the Holy Land by cogs and roundships. No other option really, since Byzantines won't let you pass through Constantinople so easily ;)

I've never accessed JSTOR so I can't comment. However, I have read about a number of excavations along the south coast of England that have clearly demonstrated that English medieval warships (the largest of the time) were built using trees sourced locally, from forests very close to the coast in Kent and Dorset. So England may have imported lumber but it certainly wasn't reliant upon it for ship building in the 1300-1400's. There may well have been a shortage of certain species of wood or particularly suitable logs for main masts but this didn't impact on the ability to build large, sea-going vessels. I believe most of the imported woods were used for fancy work or joinery. I'm actually more concerned about the playability of an island nation in the game, though, as England will be severely stuffed without a fleet.

may i add. i noticed you put the billmen as a defensive unit and in the spearmen and pikeman line. which shouldnt be in all reality since they are far different. billmen were an attacking force and actuelly very poor at defense, the bills werent that long but were excellent for an infantry charge. accuratly billmen should have an attack of 3 and defense of 1. 2 if you wanna help them out a bit. just my input ;)

As embryodead already pointed out, the unit types a set to work the same way as in the original game. Thus any spear/pike/mass/bill/halberdier/etc are used as defence, while sword/mace/axe/etc are offensive units. Same goes for ballistic units. It might not be 100% correct realisticly, but it's part of the gameplay.

As england those damn scots kept comming down into my homeland with setlers, just because I hadnt built enough cities yet!

Anyways I showed them I started again and shoved 4 warriors up noth to fend of the scots in a big line they couldnt get past :). It only took three at first but I sent 4 because I recon they might build a city next to my wall and make me move them and then I will need another one. Anyways I will tell you whether it worked :). Also if I can get a boat out before the french hav filled their terretory up then I might just make myself a nice little beachhead on the normandy coast :).

Oh and by the way I like that you represented the welsh

They sure learned that lesson the hard way the last time. :)

[Really though, if you had an ancient and famously wealthy city sitting on the chokepoint of an international trade route, and a massive invading horde turned up at your city walls, and they claimed they were "just passing through" wouldn't YOU be at least a bit skeptical? I get suspicious if even just one AI warrior wanders one tile into my borders, imagine how the Byzantine Emperor reacted when every armed man in Western Europe popped up right outside Constantinople one afternoon... ]
