I'm a few years late, but I've finally played MEM. You two really did a top notch job. The graphics, pace, and progression of the game are very smooth. It also stays very close to the standard Civ 3 play-style, and builds on the game's basic appeal. I especially enjoy the vassal system, as it enhances the dilemma of how to choose the best government.
I am playing as Venice on the big European map. I kept taking bites out of my neighbors to slowly grow my power base. The Military Alliance feature is quite appropriate, as it allows you to really play your opponents off one another to ensure your survival. After some carefully planned wars, I'm in command of an empire spanning from Portugal to Baghdad. My greatest remaining rivals are the Egyptians, the Lithuanians, and the Tatars. I've also built up quite the amphibious force of galleys and Crusaders so I can swiftly descend on any point in the Mediterranean. I'm looking forward to the Renaissance Era so I can get my best units.
The only adjustment I might make in my next game is to have the battle created unit be an Army instead of a Leader. That way my computer opponents can have access to these powerful tools as well. Greats job, guys. Glad to see the game is still going strong.
