Iron Maiden is epic rock. And a fair history lesson.

Do brass bands count as metal music?

Hehe... I knew someone would say that.

I listen to Satyricon. I don't care what sub-genre that is though.

I accidentally clicked on the hardcore. But then, I was thinking about HC-punk... Well, I guess it's kinda close to HC-metal (altough I have no idea what HC-metal is... is it just... umm, superfast?)...

My all time favorite band is: AC/DC, no one else compares.:band:
Most overrated band ever.

I don't like metal at all, I think almost all of it sounds the same. Classic Rock ftw!

For me, there is nothing like progressive metal and power metal when I want to reflect, contemplate, and revel in emotion. Sometimes, it's almost spiritual. However, I occasionally feel somewhat resentful of thrash/black/death/etc. metal for giving any band labelled "metal" a bad name in the eyes of most people.

On that note, if your impression of metal is "it's obnoxious noise with satanic lyrics that all sounds the same" or something similar, I urge you to listen to some of the music of Symphony X, Dream Theater, or Kamelot. Or any number of other power/progressive metal bands. You have no idea what you're missing.

there's even christian metal for those who dare, gives me the shivers though.

I enjoy metal a lot, but the other genres are not to be disregarded, either. Makes it impossible to vote. The different Metal subgenres are very hard to tell apart, in my opinion. I have no idea in which the bands i like fall. (Not that this bothers me)
My favourites are probably Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and early Metallica.

Where are you from? What is your native language, if you don't mind me inquiring.

I'm from Sweden and the most respected band from here is Ebba Grön, a swedish punk band...
oops , forgotten punk...

Perfect post.

EDIT: MY 5000th POST WOOO

Some bands that suck and are overrated: Judas Priest, AC/DC, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Korn, Slayer, Tool.

Some good "metal" (I would say hard rock) bands:

Deftones: original, does not sound like anything else out there. Except their first album sounded like Korn, but better. After that, original.

Slipknot: is actually pretty good if you "get" them. They intend to create the ugliest music around, and they often succeed. The masks, etc... not really my thing.

Glassjaw: extremely original, a total disregard for trends.

Chevelle: imagine Tool if Tool was any good. Then make it better.

Papa Roach: did their first album suck? Oh yes, yes it did. Worse than almost anything else. Which is what makes the pretty good stuff they've been doing since then so surprising.

And the best metal band ever: UNCLE DUDE!

My favourites are probably Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and early Metallica.

Early Metallica is a school book example of thrash metal, but the others are more difficult. Sabbath was one of the founders of metal so they dont belong to any genre. Priest and Maiden are "heavy metal" but the term heavy metal is often synonymous with metal. You could call them just plain metal. The Priest album "Painkiller" is also speed metal.

The world of metal genres is a real jungle, and there are many people that are very touchy about them, so if you're not interested you should perhaps not go there...
