However, I occasionally feel somewhat resentful of thrash/black/death/etc. metal for giving any band labelled "metal" a bad name in the eyes of most people.
On that note, if your impression of metal is "it's obnoxious noise with satanic lyrics that all sounds the same" or something similar, I urge you to listen to some of the music of Symphony X, Dream Theater, or Kamelot. Or any number of other power/progressive metal bands. You have no idea what you're missing.
Till said:I enjoy metal a lot, but the other genres are not to be disregarded, either. Makes it impossible to vote. The different Metal subgenres are very hard to tell apart, in my opinion. I have no idea in which the bands i like fall. (Not that this bothers me)
My favourites are probably Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and early Metallica.
