After years under the yoke of foreign powers, the Polish people had finally achieved autonomy. The revolution of 1899 gained traction centered in Gdansk and the surrounding area. The rebels quickly marched south and took Warsaw. From there, the rebels declared a new, independent, Polish Republic, and aspired to liberate the rest of Poland.

The PPS (current governing party) adheres to these principles:
• independent Republic of Poland based on democratic principles
• direct universal voting rights
• equal rights for all nations living in Poland
• equal rights for all citizens, regardless of race, nationality, religion and gender
• freedom of press, speech and assembly

lurker's comment:

Ugh, Major NPCs? I thought we'd all learned that lesson from Tani's games.

They are to put major powers in otherwise relatively empty areas.

A sound idea to keep competition strong.

I'm interested to see how you fill out the map Mosher, and wish you luck on managing what's likely to be a load of those things!

Also totally stealing that traits idea.

Spoiler :

I have finished the map, with all NPCs and PCs down (except HJ since he didn't move his claim like I asked).

The major NPCs are:

The Empire of Brazil
The Republic of France
The Kazakh Khanate
Morocco-Algiers
Central Germany (dark blue in central Germany)
Brunei Confederation
Tibet (green blob)
Vijayanagar

Note that, while some nations have had their claims expanded more than others, they will also have poor IC and technology whereas smaller PCs will have superior IC and tech.

Lake Maraciabo is a, well, a lake. I would assume you cannot claim it.

It is extremely difficult to tell what are lakes and what aren't on the map as they are the same color as the provinces. I'll fix that on the final version.

It's beautiful.

But bloody hell, it's a good thing I didn't write the bio yet, 'cuz I gotta figure out a way to justify half of south Africa. :p

So what's next? I'm trying to figure out what exactly we start with and where to go from there...

Economy:

The lifeblood of nations! Money makes the world go around, and boy do you need it.

There are two economic factors in play: money and factories. Money is wonderful and can buy many things, but you need somewhere to produce those things; factories. 10 units of currency can create on factory. One factory can create one IC. IC can be sold, used to create armies, etc. Money = provinces*IC/2 (or m=p*c/2)

So according to this you need money to create a factory in order to create IC, but you need a nonzero value for IC to have any money to start with. I'm a little confused.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun here? Are you working on something for us?

We'll all have starting IC.

Can I still join?

SPQR:

spqr.png

Government: Roman Republic

Consuls:

Lucinius Octavius
Marius Flavius

Religion: Catholicism

Capital: Rome

Official Language: Italian

Currency: Denarius

History:

After the Napoleonic occupation of Italy, liberal ideas and nationalism spread to Italy. George Lucius, an American Italian, and Cornelius scipio, an Italian poet, created the ''Roman Legions'' in 1856, a secret organazation to unite Italy and restore the old Roman Republic.

Soon the organazation grew in numbers and by 1863, it had over 12,000 members. In 1867, a revolution in Rome overthrow the Pope and forced him to give up his political powers to the Rebels. In exchange, the Rebels promised to make Catholicism the official religion of the new Italy.

Soon after the revolution, all Italians Kingdoms, along with the French States, united into a coalition to destroy the revolution. Meanwhile, the Rebels split in two factions, the ''Greens'', who wanted to only keep Rome or have a loose confederation in Italy, and the ''Reds'', who were more radical and wanted to unite all of Italy.

Both George and Cornelius were members of the Reds. When Cornelius was assasinated by members of the Green faction, George, with the support of the people and the military couped the Government, outlawed the Greens and became Dictator.

A huge purge begun that killed thousands of Greens. In 1868, the Allied Armies reached Rome and started the siege of Rome. The allies had an army of 65,000 soldiers, while the Rebels had only 7,000 soldiers.

However George inspired the population, and after 3 years of siege, the allies were forced to retreat. After re-grouping his army, in 1873, whith an army of 12,000 soldiers, George begun his famous Italian campaign. In less than 6 years he managed to unite most of Italy thanks to his military genius.

When George returned to Rome in 1880, he declared himself Roman Emperor. For this reason alone, he was a marked man. In August 29 1881, he was assassinate by his own Generals, who took power for themselves.

Mark Antony (not to be confused with the ancient figure), commander of the army couped the Dictatorship of the Generals in 1886 and declared a free Republic based on the Ancient Republic. A Senate was created and soon SPQR became a true Republic. Stability was restored and now the people have belief in the Republic.

*snip* Yes. I'll work your claims in.

Everyone will start with IC.

Update tomorrow

A Brief History of Portuguese Angola

Despite Portugal's head-start in the Age of Discovery, its incursions into the African interior remained limited compared to other European powers. Most of its colonization efforts centred around coastal cities, developed chiefly for the slave trade; the Portuguese also pursued trade with the local kingdoms; missionary work educated the Kongo peoples in the Portuguese language, and the Kongo Kingdom became a chief regional ally.

By the late 18th Century military sovereignty theoretically extended from coast to coast, in practical terms its control of the centre of the continent was dubious at best, leading to frequent disputes with Britain. The Kongo Kingdom was by now a Portuguese vassal, but the lack of a substantial colonial garrison meant the kings still had a reasonable degree of autonomy. In 1890 the British delivered an ultimatum demanding the cessation of Portuguese claims between Angola and Mozambique; Portugal complied, leading to internal dissent over the monarchy's show of weakness in the face of Britain's "betrayal" of the Treaty of Windsor.

When the British empire erupted in civil war, the governor of Angola Álvaro Ferreira seized the opportunity to reassert Portuguese control over the contested territories. Motivated by an ill-timed campaign by British loyalists against the Boer settlers in 1894, a combined Portuguese-Kongo army marched on South Africa after securing a secret treaty with the German colony in South-West Africa. The resulting war lasted for three years as the Portuguese fought both British and Afrikaans troops to a bloody stalemate. In 1896, Angola gained unexpected support from South-West Africa after unrest in Germany detached the colony from the continent, and the governor Theodor Leutwein assumed unilateral control of the colonial office. In 1897, the remaining British and Boer forces surrendered to the coalition.

Ironically, the same upheaval in Europe that had enabled the campaign led to Portugal severing ties with her colonies. The bulk of the army now lay in Africa under the command of António Duarte Ramada Curto. Leutwein, whose garrison was exhausted and suffering supply shortages, proposed a consolidation of their colonies under auspices of a joint government. Curto extended an invitation to his counterpart in Mozambique, but the acting Governor-General had taken the opportunity to restyle the colony as his personal fiefdom and refused to relinquish his power. Later that year, the colonies of Angola, German South-West Africa, and the embattled South Africa were reconstituted as the Commonwealth of South-West Africa, with Curto and Leutwein as co-presidents.

Would you mind terribly if I came in as them? I've never tried playing a simple base nation like that. We could even tweak the history for a nice split into the 3 successor nations of The Czardom of Amerika, The New Confederation of America and The United States of America (I may make the USA more British Empire or something.)

It would be a tad cramped but provided no one else jumps in we should be fine.

If not then I would like to Bagsee Australia for an Empire.

Sorry about not responding in a timely manner. I'd be fine with you playing the USA if you can still submit a nation.

He can still submit a nation, as the game hasn't started yet I can still play around with the map.
