Hello, Sir!
What do you think are the most overrated games?

Currently I think Super Mario 64 DS is overrated, but that's really it. You can't play a 3D game using a D-pad!

Also, Command and Conquer: Generals suffers from lack of a minimap. How come it gets such good reviews?!

You can use the toutch screen in Super Mario 64 DS. In real life, there are no mini maps.

I think the Grand Theft Auto and Halo series are reaaaaaaaally overrated

Halo series and World of Warcraft. The GTA series is over rated but 4 was a masterpiece.

Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Most overrated game. Ever.

And yeah why don't you like it?

Civilization IV is overrated too, well pretty much the entire series is.

I can easily see myself becoming addicted to Final Fantasy VII if I played it. But I still hate all the people who went on saying "Final Fantasy VII at #76 is bad" at the IGN boards.

Some people rant about how Mario and Zelda games milk the same basic formula from game to game, but I've heard that Halo does that from level to level.

I remember there was this one time where I was at somebody's house and we played Halo, except I was later getting sleepy. I stayed up all night playing Civ4. I should've stayed and played Halo, seeing how it got better ratings. But nope, I had to be an idiot.

I forgot Super Mario Sunshine LOL, the 8/10 Gamespot gave it is a little too low, and it's still worth playing today, but it's definetely not 9.4/10 material (GameSpy and IGN). Bah. And, according to Gamerankings, it's the best GCN game I own. The camera is god awful.

Fable, Madden, Starcraft

Fable was possibly the most overhyped game I've ever played. Was supposed to be a completely open world where you make your own decision that affect the outcome of everything blah blah bs marketing. The game blew, it was linear, bad quests, bad control, mediocre graphics.

Madden hasn't improved in seven years yet it has a t.v. show.

Starcraft, I just don't get the game's appeal. I played, it was boring, I hate rts anyway. This one came to mind because my friend is raving about the upcoming sequel.

I'd list GTA, although San Andreas is a pretty beautiful game in how the large the game world is. I'd include Empire Earth 2. Also Halo 2 (ZOMG, two-fisted action). And WoW.

I suspect SPORE is overhyped when you consider it in its entirety, and how dumb downed I suspect the gameplay is going to be versus how cool it was in the videos years ago; We're all gonna buy it and love the 'asynchronous world-sharing' I believe, anyways.

I would definitely NOT include CIV4 on an overhyped list, although the Warlords expansion was semi-overhyped.

Civ 4 - obvious reasons
GTA 3 - boring, crappy graphics, full of bugs, it's only slightly more violent then mario bros, completley not what i was expecting
Final Fantasy series
WoW - obvious reasons
Oblivion - didn't seem as much fun
Mafia - boring
NeverwinterNights - it was just ok
IcewindDale2 - it was also just ok
Splinter Cell - boring
Heroes2 - ok
Seven Kingdoms - now this just plain sucks
Myst series - come on, it's one of the most boring adventure games i ever played i really don't see what's to like about them
Majesty - sucked
Freedom Force - it got very boring after a while
Shivers - sucky graphics & annoying random stuff
EDIT: yeah and Empire Earth & Rise of Nations ... didn't like them at all /EDIT

P.S. I thought Fable was a VERY good fun game. Probably because i never heard about it till i played it. And from what you said it was overhyped, not overrated. IIRC it was not rated that highly anyway.

:trouble:

You'd better retract that statement, pardner...

I suppose just knowing how the game ends really ruins it for me. It is a mediocre adventure that overtakes the vastly superior spawn of it that is Majora's Mask.

And Civ 4 isn't all that great, while Civ 3 is amazing.

I'm a bit surprised that anyone, let alone multiple people, listed any Civilization games as overrated at a site called "Civfanatics." :hmm:

Anyway, I'll second Halo, definitely.

FFVII is a very good game that gets treated as a great game, but is probably a must-play for serious gamers at this point, if only to see what the fuss is all about.

I still consider FFIV the best Final Fantasy, at least of those I've played (all up through X, sans III).

I assume you just misquoted someone, and are talking about Zelda: OoT.

Though I would consider Ocarina a great game, you're one of the very few people I've heard say they prefer Majora. I would agree, though. I always prefered Majora's atmosphere, and liked the three-day setup.

Diablo.

Click. Click. Click. Click. Click.

Yes, nice atmosphere to the game, but that is it.

I do really enjoy the Zelda games, but they are blown way out of proportion to what they actually are.

I certainly didn't misquote Swein. I believe he was asking me about why I felt OoT was overrated, so I replied to him.

OoT is linear (outside of the numerous game breakings that one can do by well positioned jumps) and is just not compelling enough for me to play when I already know the ending.

Now, Majora's Mask, on the other hand, was free form, mysterious and compelling due to the urgency that encapsuled it and how critical Link was to the city. I just didn't get that feeling of connect to the citizens in OoT.
