Most Overrated Games

Super Mario Sunshine is overrated. It's more of 8.6/10 than 9.4/10.

Has there ever been a minimap in Command and Conquer games?

One popular choice that I haven't seen mentioned is Metal Gear Solid 2. I haven't played any MGS games, though.

I wish I could comment on Halo and CoD4, but I haven't played those games. My younger brother has, though.

One thing to remember ratings are subjective. They are just one guy's opinion. Even a site like gamerankings or metacritic are just the collation of a few dozen reviewers' opinions and have no basis in fact.

A collation of a dozen subjective reviews is still subjective.

"No basis in fact" is a steep statement. I'd say that a meta-rating site will have the best chance of correcting for reviewers' personal bias to give a frequently rated game a fair shake.

Here is my rating system:

Start at 100%

If the game is not turn-based deduct 15% right off the bat
If the game involves jumping as a major game play mechanism deduct another 10%
If the game is strategy or tactics Add 10%
If the game is an FPS or RPG add 10%
If the game is a sports game deduct 10%
Deduct 15% for any game that features any members of the Mario clan (They annoy me)
Add 5% for being on the DS
edit: Add 10% for being original
Cap at 100% (in the case of a turn-based-Strategy-RPG on the DS that doesn't involve jumping or Mario)

Now this is the highest you can get from my rating system. It can only go down from here based on the quality of of the game's implementation.

Is this a fair rating system? As fair as any other reviewer's out there as they are subjective. It is fairly accurate about how much I will like a game. (And, yes, it means that some of the RTSs that I worked on couldn't earn 100%, oh well).

By this system, many games are overrated.

warpstorm, people have made at least a million podtd explaining in detail to swein why he shouldn't be so obsessed with ratings, all of it has just bounced off this incredibly thick skull.

As PrinceScamp said, it's pointless. Swein deliberately posts this review garbage to get on everyone's nerves. Why he hasn't been warned for this, I have no idea. He's on my ignore list, so I don't even see his posts anymore, except when others quote them. It's made reading this forum soooo much nicer. :)

Okay, but what's wrong with a game not being turn-based? Or being a platformer? Or being a Mario game?

Though I think the reason why Mario games are so well rated on top 100 games list is because they are the most escapist, and that's what games are for. Mario is not whiny (Raiden from Metal Gear Solid series) or "I will do this at any cost" (Kratos from God of War series).

So let's see; the worst game by that system is any Mario game not on the DS (which is pathetic) and the best game is... Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2.

Cap at 100% (in the case of a turn-based-Strategy-RPG on the DS that doesn't involve jumping or Mario)
Tactics Ogre and its descendents, in other words.

Hey, your system is about as valid as anyone else's, except you're honest about it.

It's better to put more faith in a single proven critic than a group of unknown or unreliable critics. With one person, a reader is more apt to know how harshly he rates his subjects, what criteria he tends to use, and how knowledgable he actually is.

Alternatively, putting five hundred knuckleheads in a room doesn't get you Ezra Pound, it gets you Wikip- er, a roomful of five hundred knuckleheads.

How is Majoras Mask any less linear than OoT?
It's been a long time since I played it, but if I recall correctly the main storyline was fairly linear. However, there were several more sidequests, and generally more freedom in how one could go about doing them.

Majora also did a better job than most games in explaining why NPCs seem to always do the same thing over and over again. ;)

I know what I like and I know what I dislike. I've been playing video games since the Odyssey. Because I've played games for ages, I know I don't like those types of games as well and the reviews of I would do of them would reflect that. Heh, it's just my opinion, just like it is the opinion of the guy at GameSpy or PC Gamer.

No. A poor execution in any genre would still be lower. That would just have a few strikes against it to start with.

and the best game is... Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2.

I may just have to pick up FFTA2 this weekend as it is likely to get a good score as it falls into my biases. Note that is the highest possible, not that it can achieve that. I may still not like the execution of the game even if it is in the types of games I like.

After all, these are my opinions and you know what they say about opinions...

But unlike wikipedia, where the inputer could be hit or miss (Ph'D vs. grafitti artist), the metacritic sites are mainly polling established reviewers (gamespot, gamespy, etc..). So I still stand by my original comment.

Diablo 1 and 2, bored me fast. Cool story, but i couldn't play it
Civ 4 graphics, not the game
If I was a really big gamer, I would say Fable, but I had a whole lotta fun playing that game, so I love it
Starcraft
WoW
Final Fantasy except 10.
I'm sure there are more, but I like video games, and tend not to play anything but RTS, so meh

Call of Duty 4. It was game like decades ago. Seriously overrated.
Most annoying thing were douchy SAS guys. Especially "know it all" old captain.
Luckily RS Las Vegas II came and restored my believe to genre.

I like Captain Price :(

Although the story isn't the greatest or most origional I did really enjoy the game, both singleplayer and multiplayer.

I've never played any Tom Clancy game, although I've been meaning too.

Diablo.

Click. Click. Click. Click. Click.

Click. Click. Click. Click. Click.

Yes, nice atmosphere to the game, but that is it.

I do really enjoy the Zelda games, but they are blown way out of proportion to what they actually are.

I always thought Diablo (the demo at least) played like a grown up version of Zelda.

Now, for overrated games, I think FF7 was overrated. (everything before FF7 was much, much better).

You actually preferred RS:LV 2 to COD4? You sir, are mad. LV2 is practically in no way different from the first one and it too wasnt anything special since it was a watered down RS, made noob friendly unlike the olden RS games.

Halo.

Also, Command and Conquer: Generals suffers from lack of a minimap. How come it gets such good reviews?!
What'choo talkin' 'bout? Minimap in the bottom left corner. And hey, it might have been non-canon and structured closer to AoE, but its unique design makes it all the more entertaining.

AND it's about to get a lot hotter.

FFVII
GTA3
WOW
Halo 1-3
Super Mario Galaxy; I just never felt is was too fun, I still haven't been able to finish. Actually pretty much every Mario except 64 is overrated.

Word, Majora pwns Ocarina's ass.

I can understand somebody saying that Mario Galaxy is overrated, but Mario 3 and World probably are not. You sir, need to brush up on your act.

You can say Majora is a little better than Ocarina, but not that it kicks its ass.

And hating StarCraft is dumb if you like RTSs. At the very least, it's better than Age of Empires (the whole series). And Warcraft III has...an UPKEEP system!!! It's called Warcraft, not Peacecraft!
