My idea for a new form of government

I was think that of you don't have a standing army, navy or air force, you could spend the money saved on education.

OK. What do you do when your neighbour decides he really likes your land? Remember that the said neighbour has a highly effective and efficient army, navy, and airforce, and because of his military spending, he's way ahead of you when it comes to power. He launches a sneak attack.

Your move.

This strikes me as an idiosyncratic attempt at social democracy, rather than anything particularly novel. "Everyone will be equal and free", while perhaps a nice sentiment, is reduced to a pretty empty bit of off-the-shelf rhetorical fluff when you don't seem to have any plan to enact such a conclusion.

You can't have equality and freedom. Freedom is inherently unequal and equality is inherently unfree.
Because the only possible definition of "equal" is that used by mathematicians?

Darf Spud where would the governemt get the money to offer free university education? Would you be willing to cut student numbers to do it, and theres downsides to putting up taxes? Generally the working class people who don't go to university tend to get annoyed when middle class uni students bleat on about free education. Its not free it just means someone else pays for it via taxes one way or another.
Eh, works in Scotland.

Lets keep the UK together, but lets abolish those national parliaments. HI5?

Quackers: turning the block back to 1908?

Why not relieve yourself of the burden placed upon you by mooching Scotsmen? You're so quick to mention your displeasure with them, after all, I can't imagine you'd shed a tear for their exit... :mischief:

That would make Alex Salmond happy.

...I'm willing to keep the nations together to ensure his unhappyness!

We're an island. We don't have neighbours. They'd have to launch a naval invasion, and that would only be at all feasible from Europe. And we're pretty good friends with Europe, on the whole. Western Europe hasn't seen war since 1945, and there seems no reason why that would change.

Really, why do people still think that the UK needs a standing army? We're not a world power anymore, we aren't in any danger of being invaded, and if we just kept ourselves to ourselves no one would have any good reason to anyway.

Quackers screams "FALKLANDS!!!" in 3, 2, 1... :mischief:

..and I would be right.

Although I believe our undercover agent Takhisis is doing as much as he can to spread the fried monstrosity that is the Battered-Mars bar to the Argentines in an effort to obesify them.

Darf Spud, how old are you bro?

You sound like a young idealistic cat. Which is good, but I should tell you that the older you get, the more you learn about history and civics, the more you will understand why things are the way they are.

Keep studying, be open minded, don't be come old and cynical when it comes to politics and you might just be able to make some positive political change in your country. I mean you have just as good a chance as anyone else your age in your country. :salute:

You do know that government are scrapping caps on tuition fees? The fees for a place like Oxford will go up by thousands, so even if you get a loan for it, chances are you'll be in debt for the rest of your life (university graduates aren't getting as many jobs now, and the ones they do are paying less).
Yeah, cos if you go to a crappy university like Oxford, it basically means you'll NEVER get a job!!!

So what do you think? Ask me any questions you have on things I've missed out.

This is a democratic constitution, not a new type of government. What you describe is a particularly bad structure for democracy, but democratic nonetheless. 90% is a ridiculously high bar for changing laws.

its sounds like an inefficient and expensive system that would do very little to the people, I would argue to basic points, except they have been covered by others.
My advice is move to Norway or Iceland. They have similar systems there.

However on the bright side I am considering starting a thread for my government. Can't wait to be teared apart by the wolves of the OT

Something missing that's common is accountability and transparency.

-The government is required to report on all their dealings with other countries, money, etc.,. and can not make laws and deals without it being ratified by the popluation.

-At any time the government takes the law into its own hands it should become private and all finances, powers, ect.,. should be rescinded.

-Have minor third party intervene with civil injunctions during judicial proceedings that take too long.

-A special army designed to carry this all out.

P.S. this is going off the basis government is infallible. Some of these ideas are probably unenforceable too.
