Off-Topic Overlord
I read this book back in high school and for the life of me I cant remember who wrote it or even the title. However, I do remember the storyline with some detail.
Basically, its a sci-fi book involving a story of a young teen boy who is identified as a mutant, captured by the authorities, his family arrested for trying to help him and he is sent to a relocation planet to live - however, its not a place to live, its essentially a prison planet where the mutants are simply sent to die.
Him and another mutant are kicked off a landing craft where our protagonist gets away but the other mutant child ends up dying in the blast of the crafts jets as it takes off. Our hero is left alone to wander the jungles of this extremely hostile world, where it takes all of his mutant abilities to survive. Speaking of which, it is given that he has great strength, and some animal-like heightened senses.
After some time of learning to survive in the jungle he finds an ad hoc settlement of mutants who have also learned to survive in the harsh environment. It is here he finds a mutant girl who in turn likes him, and also meets his overall nemisis, a very large red headed mutant whose name is either McFinn, Finnegan or something along those lines. I remember him being described as very large, red hair, with a pair of horn like spikes jutting from the side of his head or neck. He is regarded as the strongest and toughest resident of the settlement, and naturally views our hero as competition to that role.
I cant remember a lot of what happens next, but I do remember the ending. Basically, the mutants come up with a plan to hijack one of the crafts that occasionally arrive to deliver food to the planets settlements. They succeed in this, and endeavor to go back to earth to attack or kidnap the person who has instilled all these anti-mutant laws and responsible for their treatment. Somehow (I forget how) they do indeed find the location of the person responsible - the 'great leader' who is in charge of the human race. Their team is basically working their way through a huge complex in order to find this guy, when the McFinn/Finnegan character has some kind of breakdown and attacks his teammates, which results in a final showdown fight with our hero. I do remember this battle being written as epic, with our hero prevailing somehow. I also seem to remember that the bad guy rapes our heros girlfriend or something along those lines somwhere in the book.
Back to the mission. Bottom line, our crew finds the head cheese, and lo and behold, the guy in charge is himself a mutant - but not one with physical powers, but rather with mental powers - the ability to control peoples actions via his mind. What happens next was rather odd in the book. Our hero and the head bad guy face off and apparently our hero also had some latent mental powers as well, and just as the head bad guy is about to kill off our hero, the two somehow switch minds/bodies in a burst of mental energy. So, the last thing I remember about the book was that our heros mind was in the head bad guys body, while his own body laying potentially dying on the floor.
I dont remember much after that, but I seem to think our hero pulled a switcheroo and ended up making things right again.
So, I would like some help in trying to find this book again. If any of this sounds in any way, shape or form familiar to you then please let me know. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but I would really like to know who the author of the book was and the title just so I can recall it once again, and possibly re-read the story after all these years.
Thanks!
Oh...and just for discussions sake. Even if you dont know or that story does not ring a bell, feel free to coment on some sci-fi books that may be somewhat like that story. Those may be enjoyable reading as well.
