Haha, both systems were awesome. For NES, I remember Zelda I and II were impossible for me, and I remember watching in awe when my cousin plowed through them with ease. I also remember Contra was hilarious. My favorites were Mario Bros, Dr Mario, and Tetris.

Spent more time in my life with the SNES, so it wins by a little. My favorites were Super Mario World 1 and 2, Mario RPG, Zelda Link to the Past, Kirby Superstar, Donkey Kong 1-3, and later (thanks to emulation :p) FF4-FF6.

NES had Metroid and Tetris :hide:

How was Zelda deep? Implied dialogue? Like the implied dialogue between Pacman and his little yellow bubbles?

Even the gameplay was simple. There were a handful of different options, but really you were just pushing the B button in front of a lot of enemies, watching for patterns, etc. It was a very un-intellectual, un-emotional experience.

Now, I'm not saying any of this bad. Some people really like simple side-scrollers. But they're not my favourite.

Hmm... I never got the chance to play either of the systems (probably because I was born in 1994 :D)... so my vote goes to N64 pwning both of them!

pff....... I was born in 1994 and I was man enough to play the SNES! :smug:

As far as Zelda goes, it's like this:

Link to the Past > Adventure of Link > Original Zelda.

How is shooting a bunch of aliens (and asking questions later) deep? (Contra)

Man, a few people in this thread haven't really played either of them. I feel OLD.

Ignoring the technological differences for a second, lets just look at each system's iconic games.

NES:
Super Mario Brothers 1 and 3
Duck Hunt
Tetris
Zelda 1 and 2
Contra
Techmo Super Bowl
Punch Out!

SNES:
Zelda
Super Mario World
Mario Cart
Chronotrigger
Super Punch Out
FF3
StarFox
Donkey Kong Country

There are some good games on both of those lists, but I really think the SNES list has more classics. Chrono Trigger keeps popping up on "best video game ever" lists (I was never a big RPG guy, so I can't really say one way or the other), as does the Zelda game. The SNES was really the platform that landed the modern sports game as well. The NES couldn't "save", and didn't have computing juice to keep stats, or have a playbook, etc. The SNES launched NBA Jam and Madden.

The NES is fun, and Super Mario Brothers 3 is prob one of the the best video games ever made, but I think the SNES is better.

Isn't this kind of like asking "Which is better, a PS2 or a PS3?"

The NES and the SNES defined the modern console video gaming world. This was not an Atari or an Amiga or an Intellivision. For their time, both systems were pretty revolutionary. The difference is not just technology and generations.

Everything after that was essentially playing on the same theme made popular by Nintendo and Sega, who eventually failed. (I hear the real old timers about to yell about the Atari and maybe the Intellivision, but look at a screenshot of those games and the Nintendo's, and look at the controllers and how it was marketed and played. They are wildly different. The "computery" nature of the Amiga and Commodore also relegated them to relative obscurity as well.)

SNES of course! It had 3D games as opposed to NES's 8bit format. Star Fox, F-Zero, Mario Kart. To a kid who was the only kid in class with an NES while everyone else had Sega's, this was life changing!

Man enough? idk about that.... all I know is that the first video game system I ever got to play was the N64. Though I think over at a friends house I played Duck Hunt once, don't remember what system it was for.

The N64 was weak, how many games does it have that are still fun now? Three?

SNES hands down, there's good reason for all the emulation attention.

What? The N64 was awesome! Most of the games that I played back in the 90's are still fun to play, from Mario Kart, to Donkey Kong, to Goldeneye. They were all great!
