NES World/Regional Maps Requests Thread

Since I'm rather anti-establishment in the realm of maps to begin with, and people for some reason think the map Dis and myself have worked on is only good for modern or semi-modern stuff, after seeing some gameplay from DEFCON (see my sig or an example), I was inspired to try some different ideas.

Bottom right is the only "filled in" version (not accurate, version bottom left), others are all "blank". It's mostly a shift from unoccupied territory being white to black. I think it's more pleasing to the eye, really - not so blinding. Darkening the ocean and the border correspondingly seems only logical.

Once you apply colors to it it loses most of the appeal though. I think it'd be interesting if it remained "black" and national colors were insets into the borders and seaborders, though it'd be fairly difficult to tell what was what at a glance in such an instance.

Just more sort of a visual experiment than anything.

I don't really like that. How about making unoccupied territory light grey? Less painful, and you could always use dark grey for barbarians...

Cold War looking Stratmap demo. City locations are not accurate at all, nor were they intended to be.

A visualization of what I was talking about earlier. I think the border outlines should be thinner (2 - 3px vs. 4 currently) as it looks kinda screwy on peninsulas like Baja. City borders should maybe be lightish gray instead of white for higher clarity.

Interesting... definitely does create a specific atmosphere. Although I still preffer the more conventional Jason-NK-etc. map.

I kind of like the thought of customizing the map, since it's (IMO) one of the things that gets stared at most. If by switching some colors around you can, even if for just a moment, make people feel like they're sitting in some bunker somewhere studying a giant screen, that's pretty cool, I think.

I'd definitely agree that the format only really works in a 1950 or later (maybe WWII) type setting, up through indeterminate future. Otherwise it's really out of place. Also an extreme pain in the ass to make, but that's another concern entirely.

I usually don't type things just for the sake of typing them. :p

Then you were serious?? :dubious:

Anyways I was going to offer you to put the "brighted" map with territories over the original black map in photoshop. But I just love the way you did it... so I think its better than any other solution.

But it was accurate--Traverse City, MI, is right on one of thosed dots. Now, perhaps you didn't intend to place it there, but...

In other words, I can read...

I just kind of randomly dropped down dots. Occasionally I would put them where I knew there were cities nearby. Forgot to color in the two in Florida.

And thanks, it does look unique... though it's something of a pain in the ass since it all has to be done manually. I suppose once you'd set it up though, it'd be fairly easy to modify during invasions and such (I doubt many people would have the patience for even that though). I'm thinking it might be useful to also come up with a new "odd pixel" city icon instead of the even "fat cross". If I can put together a GPS city list for Disenfranchised we can place the vast bulk of populated cities on the map accurately, but it'll be centered on a single pixel so odd-sized icons make more sense than evens.

I guess at that point the whole world could be done in that "outline" format to just create a dedicated Modern - Future world map, since nobody much (notable exception Stormbringer) wants to use it for anything earlier.

Is there guide to map making?

:yup: :yeah:

... what's there to guide? I mean, specifically, what are you talking about: borders, whole maps, coloration, or what?

If there was a guide, I'd include that in the big one....
