NES World/Regional Maps Requests Thread

I haven't been able to find a blank world map of the early Silurian period that's not of a shoddy quality and doesn't have so many different color pixels, that make recoloring a map very time consuming.

I doubt you'll find one, either. Recoloring might be the only way to go.

Do we have a map of the world at any point during the Cold War?

I'm rather disappointed at a lack of discussion when you were all so eager previously to nominate candidates for rivers. What, when it's turned around so that you might have to do some work to get what you want you suddenly shut up? :p If so I'm not surprised, but honestly being so overt about it reflects poorly.

Anyway, I'm redoing both Symphonic style variants. I'm disappointed at the sea and atmosphere gradients. I'll do that when the selection of rivers has been complete. So, if you want progress, you better get to demonstrating those opinions you're all only too eager to brandish when it doesn't involve effort.

Do we have a map of the world at any point during the Cold War?
Is it really so hard to make one when you have a modern map?

cold war map: depending on what time in the war, all you have to do is recolonize some places, change the israeli borders somewhat (pre-67 give all the palestine stuff to their respective nations, post-67 give it to israel), get rid of new countiries like Timor-L'Este, and recreate the USSR. also split germany in half, and maybe austria into quarters (very early on).

The Elbe has been added, the glow has been redone, and new, better color palettes have been added. I'll probably recolor the 2008 maps so I can use the Blank color keys on them, as I like them rather better than the chopped down versions. North America has also been added.

This is also your obligatory :old: reminder that if you want more rivers you have to get the data for them.

Okay, I took the 1914 map by das and Insane_Panda and have begun to make changes to it. I want the world in 1918, on Armistice Day. So far I've given Germany's colonial possessions to their captors, made Finland independent, and given land from the Brest-Litovsk treaty to Germany, and given parts of Romania to Bulgaria as of the Treaty of Bucharest. How should I portray Russia, which is in the midst of revolution? What about China? Remember, I want the map to be of the world before the Treaty of Versailles, and after WW1. What changes should I make? (Thick lines are from the world as of 1914, and newer thin lines are current territorial lines.)

Well, for one thing, Austria-Hungary is already legal fiction.

In regards to Russia, you should probably look up two previous 1919 NESes (one by Kal'thzar, other by Stormbringer; just search for the threads they started and you'll find them).

Hey you jerks, rivers. :p I'm right on the precipice of just ignoring what the hell you people whine about if you're not going to bother whining about it articulately. I know your time is precious and all, what with the vast amount of time people sit staring at the index, but seriously this is getting pretty damn irritating.

Would you be mildly offended if i suggested some of the older style maps for the sticky map thread?

Why is it sticky anyway? How often is such a resource needed to be accessed?

Sorry, sorry. I always want to get around to this, but keep forgetting.

I'm going to ask (in addition to Elbe) for Tagus, Ebro, Loire, Rhone, Po, Oder, Vistula, Sava, Western Dvina, Dniester, Orontes, Ussuri, Narmada, Godavari, Krishnu. I'm not going to offer any reasons for their inclusion other than them being useful.

Also, I think we need more lakes. The Dead Sea and Van are certainly a must have.

I've said at least twice that I don't give a damn what is suggested. Personally though, other than maybe North King's historical series and The Strategos' Europe map, I don't think there's anything worth salvaging from the previous three threads. There's some stuff in the Alt-Hist threads that might be worth getting.

Don't know, ask Chieftess if you're curious. I asked that the Notice Board be updated, and instead it got stickied. I don't really care either way, as we don't exactly have a wealth of stickied topics and it's probably more important than the others.

Also, considering how often people blunder in asking for maps, I'd say "frequently."

The Dead Sea and Van are certainly a must have.
I'm personally opposed to the Dead Sea, just from remembering the city project. The area is already incredibly cramped with the borders and cities; I don't know there'd be much utility in throwing in a lake about all of 3x1 to 5x1 pixels large.

I was thinking simply NK's blank map with the few tweaks it had, I don't honestly see the need of an accurate world map for NESing.. we know what its really like from RL.

Its only fantasy maps which need a greater level of accuracy IMO.

But its your game, i'd not want to stop you continuing with your works.

If other people are thinking like I am, I don't want to name any rivers because that would put me on the short list of volunteers to collect the needed data, and there is no river I want bad enough that I am willing to expend the time and effort to plot it.

Because it's really quite terribly bad? I guess you'd have to try placing cities or drawing borders on it to really know.

Oh ho, a smart one who talks! Well, I'm glad to see at least that when confronted with work people prefer discretion over hypocrisy, I suppose. :p

Well, I think we need some geographic placemark in the area, and that struck as more notable than River Jordan or the Sea of Galilee.

I guess, though with the ability to drop cities down on GPS coordinates to custom order, I don't really think it'd be necessary for period maps in terms of border creation or city placement.

Also just to inform you, das, you are now on the shortlist, as The Strategos had guessed, of gathering data or finding people to do it for you, if you actually want to see those changes come about. :p

If people are curious, this is what North King did for the Elbe:

The second and third tiers are much more representative than the first of what's actually required. For a 1091km river, 124 lines (could probably be reduced to 110 - 115) in a program like Google Earth is not so bad. Less than two hours of time. It's no worse than writing orders or what have you, just more tedious. Man up.

I'll do Indian rivers next time I have a chunk of free time. This may not be anytime soon, just to warn you.

Well, for one thing, Austria-Hungary is already legal fiction.

In regards to Russia, you should probably look up two previous 1919 NESes (one by Kal'thzar, other by Stormbringer; just search for the threads they started and you'll find them).

What do you mean? Austria-Hungary wasn't broken up until the Treaty of Versailles, I thought.

It wasn't officially broken up just yet, but even that was only from the perspective of the Entente powers that did not yet fully recognise the new developments. In truth:
- On October 18th 1918, US Secretary of State Robert Lansing declared the commitment of the Entente to the causes of independence (i.e. not even autonomy) of the assorted Slavic populations. This triggered the following:
- On October 28th, Czechoslovakia formally declared independence (and Austrians seriously couldn't do anything to stop it: the army already fell apart).
- On October 29th, as per prior agreements, the "State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs" was declared. Interestingly, it wasn't a part of the Kingdom of Serbia yet, but it was united with it in December 1st 1918.
- On October 31st, Hungary terminated the personal union with Austria.
- On November 11th, Emperor-King Karl renounced the right to participate in Austrian affairs.
- On November 13th, he did the same for Hungarian affairs. He didn't abdicate, but this was equivalent.

There still were various territorial issues to sort out in 1919 (most obviously, Hungary still held many territories outside of its modern borders, such as Transylvania), but Austria-Hungary was deader than dead.

Another thing: North King, could you possibly create a 1000 BC version of the map for coastlines and rivers (mostly the Persian Gulf and China, but there might be some other places I'm unaware of)? If not then not; I suppose that I could do it myself, but you're the designated cartographer, after all. ;)
