Update 10 - Year 1911
Global Events:
The Sioux northern forces, outnumbered, unsupplied and dismoralized, have officially surrendered to Japanese and Iroquois. That, however, is the only success for the Iroquois and their allies in the war this year.
(-5 Sioux divisions)
The Sioux launch an offensive on the central-southern front, reaching Mississippi and cutting the Iroquois forces in Tekzacohuacan. They also defeat a large yet dismoralized Iroquois army, which soon surrendered (it’s commander, Red Arrow, was sympathetic with the Sioux cause) – this is a sudden blow for the Iroquois. This in turn allows the German and newly-formed Aztec communist forces to take control over the oil fields (one economy level exchanged between Iroquois and Aztecs).
(-2 Sioux divisions, -1 Sioux air wing, -2 German divisions, -1 Aztec division, -10 Iroquois divisions)
Instead of having an insult added to the injury, the Iroquois soon get an ever worse injury from the east – the Dominion of Twenty Colonies joins into the war on Sioux side, and it’s forces attack the unprotected Iroquois homeland, taking New Salamanca. The Iroquois defeat seems very close now, and talks of mutiny rather then a futile fight to the death spread within the army, especially after the last somehow successful offensive – breakout from Yucatan – was stopped by the Aztecs.
(-3 Dominion divisions, -2 Dominion air wings, -3 Aztec divisions, -9 Iroquois divisions, -1 Iroquois air wing)
Not much happens in South America, apart from the rumors that Brazilians have invested lots of war funds (one economy level) into something (just so you know that I did your orders).
In Great Britain, a Catholic Franco-Irish conspiracy organization, Aulde Alliance, has decided to use this moment, when most of the army is away, to rise up. Riots and an outright rebellion (as well as several lynchings of British officials) begins in Ireland and France, though both are disorganized. Several attempts to assassin the king himself have failed.
Occitanian Civil War continues, with both sides achieving certain victories. The Burgundians have decided not to attack Germany (which entrenched along the border) and Italy themselves, but to push their forces out of Burgundy. That works at first, but then the Italians, enraged at the world viewing them as unable to defeat anyone ever since WWI, have launched a significant offensive with all it’s forces, taking Nice itself. They probably wouldn’t have lasted there long if the communist forces didn’t arrive to take control there soon. Burgundians have defeated the communist fleet and occupied Corsica and Sardinia, and also drove the Communist forces in the north of Occitania out of that area. The Fascist and Royalist factions have decided to agree to a compromise, merging their forces and creating a new government form, Fascist Monarchy with both the King and the Supreme Leader having lots of power. So now, North Occitania is controlled by the new Nationalist faction, and the south is Communist.
(-1 German division, -2 Italian divisions, -7 Communist divisions, -2 Communist task forces, -4 Burgundian divisions, -1 Burgundian task force, -8 Nationalist divisions)
Germannia is finished, and celebrations take place throughout Germany as the German Party HQ is moved to the new capital.
The Scandinavian leader is obviously not very sane. He ordered his tiny “great army” to attack the fortified Finnish army two times it’s size, and obviously the attempt was repulsed, with rather large casualties. The Finns then proceeded to counter-attack and take some Scandinavian territory, including the crucial port of Narvik. The Scandinavians DID have some accomplishments. Their submarine fleet has sunken several Russian ships from the Baltic Fleet that were trying to get in the North Sea, while Scandinavian marines have captured Turno, distracting some Finnish forces. Nevertheless, both achievements came out due to pure luck, and it is unlikely to last long.
(-5 Scandinavian divisions, -1 Scandinavian task force, -3 Finnish divisions, -4 Russian task forces)
The British fleet finished the Scandinavian job on the Baltic Sea Fleet, and damaged the Pacific Ocean Fleet, but failed to locate the other fleets. It seems that they all have gathered in one place, but where?
(-5 British task forces, -6 Russian task forces)
Since the Egyptian surrender, all was relatively quiet in Africa. Ofcourse, there were exceptions – Libyans overrun ungarrisoned British Morocco (Rio de Oro), while Liberians captured equally ungarrisoned parts of Sahara to the south of Libya Proper. No fighting takes place, though some white settlers in Rio de Oro wage a guerrila campaign against the Libyans.
Sudanese Republic is officially reinstated! The war hero Omar Hashaddin is elected president, and officially thanks the “heroic efforts of Brazilian and British people, that will never be forgotten in Sudan”. Troops are sent to help the British out in the Suez Canal Front. The Brazilians and Incans have withdrawn from the war, declaring that their war aims have been achieved.
The British declare colonial draft, promising citizenship to the soldiers and their families. While this does bring in 600,000 men into the army (+60 divisions for the British), it also has the nasty side effect of being the last straw for the Zulus and other black peoples in British South Africa and Greater Natal. Led by a new charismatic leader, they unite and take control over large parts of the two colonies (as they are ungarrisoned), with the exclusion of white majority areas, where the militia beats the rebels back – for now.
Madagascar announces “Project Green”, an elite (the best-trained in the world, some say!) peace-keeping division. It will be ready for action next year.
The Suez Massacre takes place, as Russo-Arabian massive army meets the equally massive British army. Apparently, the Russian intelligence was misinformed – the fortifications are not outdated, rather, they are a massive system of redoubts with turrets, and over a million troops there. Both sides exchange aerial and artillery bombardment, it alone taking many casualties. Eventually, the fortifications are broken by the sheer numbers (now reinforced by the Turks) and by the heavy artillery, and the tanks followed by infantry attack. However the British did not surrender easily, as they too had large numbers – and poison gas, which almost completely wiped out the first two infantry charges until the Russian general Alexander Chugunov ordered to equip the army with Arab gas masks. Eventually, the Russo-Arab forces do manage to reach the former site of the canal, which was destroyed by naval bombardment during the first British landing there. An attempt to push farther has failed due to the fresh Sudanese reinforcements to the British army. A new frontline settles over the destroyed canal, after taking hundreds of thousands of lives (one division=10,000 men). Suez soon becomes synonymous with outrageous casualties in the jargon for all nations involved. Forces of all sides in the area are tired and dismoralized by the loss of so many comrades in arms, with the possible exclusion of Turkish and Sudanese forces that took rather minor casualties.
(-30 British divisions, -4 Sudanese divisions, -25 Arab divisions, -20 Russian divisions, -2 Russian air wings, -2 Turkish divisions, -1 Turkish air wing)
The Arabian and Russian forces also act together in Arabia, where they nearly completely push out the Oceanians, who now only hold most of Oman. However this is achieved because nearly a half of the attacking ANZINAC (Australian New Zeelandean Indonesian Army Corps) force wasn’t there. Where did they go? They went to... Iraq! General Allenby, a first generation immigrant into Oceania from Britain, has led the invasion of ungarrisoned Iraq, despite facing fanatic guerrila resistance, and managed to reach and occupy Baghdad. This did damage the Arab economy (1 economy goes from Arabia to Oceania), but had the opposite effect on moral as the Arabs want to push the Oceanians out of Iraq, and partisans wreak havoc on Allenby’s supply route.
(-4 Oceanian divisions, -2 Arab divisions)
Pakistani terrorists continue to attack military and civilian objects throughout India, recently blowing up a train, killing 69 people and wounding 421. Harsher security measures are called for.
The Indian scientist Indir Gupta, followed by numerous scientists across the world, has made an astonishing report to his government. It will set the ground for a new course in practical scientific development... (see below)
(All nations in Middle Modern Age could now start a ten-year-long Nuclear Program project. It will be like a normal project, and it’s sole effects would be granting the nation that has completed it the Nuclear Power stat)
Random Events:
Confidence in government and it’s policy rises greatly in Brazil (+2 Culture, increased moral) after the Brazilian troops pull out of Sudan, having achieved their goals in the country.
Anti-war press, despite the increasing government control, is on the rise in Russia (especially after the Massacre of Suez), and many people do not want the army to fight “an Arabian war” due to this influence (-1 Culture). The army moral is not seriously affected.

Gupta’s Report
“I believe that the Atomic Age begins now.”
- Indir Gupta, Indian scientist. 1910.
In 1910, in numerous labs around the world, several amazing discoveries were made. But first, it happened in India, where the genius physicist and mathematician Indir Gupta was working.
His discoveries were monumental, and too long to list – in short, he is responsible for the way we understand physics today. The practical applications of this were seemingly few.
But in reality, Gupta’s discoveries have opened an opportunity for starting a nuclear program for Indian Empire and other nations. An opportunity to exploit the power, concealed within the atoms by splitting them. That would have many positive economic consequences, if used correctly...
...but most importantly, that could be used for a weapon, more powerful then any weapon that came before. The Nuclear Bomb. And with the World War II raging on, it seems like the weapon could get an application as soon as it is invented.
NPC Diplomacy:
From: Occitanian Communists
To: Germany
Comrade! We need Middle Modern Age technology, and quick!
From: Oceania
To: Arabia
We have your capital. The fight is over. We demand your unconditional surrender.
OOC:
Everyone, I consider that with this update, the first part of this NES – the “Road to World War II” – is over. Turkish War is now World War Two, or at least very close to it as already, two Great Powers at least are involved on opposing sides – Great Britain and Russian Republic. This means that I will update the nation backgrounds, in fact, I already did.
Btw, tenth update!
And nuclear age is on the horizon...
tossi, I understand that all of your fleets are swimming towards one location from various ports, thus some of them were attacked along the way by the British and the Scandinavians.
AnarchyRulz, Zulu Rebels are Amirsan’s.
stalin, are you still playing, or being in Japan (right?) prevents you from doing so?
