I will claim Siam.

To the Qing Emperor of China
From the Royal Court of Siam

We see the need to right the wrongs of the past and assure you that Siam does not harbour any ill intentions towards the Chinese Empire. We view the Middle Kingdom as our big brother and the soul of the Asian peoples and thus in propostion for the improvement of our sorry state of affairs we propose a 5 year Non-Aggression Pact and invite the Chinese Emperor on his way to Europe to stop over at the great capital of Siam, Phuket and sign this treaty.

We also propose that before those five years are up that the Siamese King can return to favour visit the great city of Peking and sign a more comprehensive treaty to ensure the continued advancement of the Asian people.

ooc: Siam, which is present day Thailand has always had its capital in Phuket. Bangkok is only the commercial district and the biggest city of the nation. Its like calling the American capital New York instead of Washington.

"From then on, much of Swiss politics would be about preserving the cantons' right to self-rule and the need for a central government."

The Takeover

Cantons - the Swiss autonomious provinces that formed the federation - had received more and more power over the years, and that had started religious and political struggles between them. Catholic and protestant cantons were falling into a strife. On federal level, this was starting to show as inability to make decisions.

For many, it was starting to seem like the nation was thrown to stagnation.

Josef Leu was one of them.

***

On that day, the Congress Hall was in chaos.

The representatives of the Cantons were debating religious questions, altough "debating" was not propably the right word for it. Everyone shouted, someone was bleeding. That's when Josef Leu stepped in. He had seven guards alongside of him.

He gave his famous speech that changed Switzerland forever.

"Gentlemen! Today I have come to the conclusion that you are not capable - or worthy - to rule this nation on the federal level. Today, gentlemen, I have come to the conclusion that the politics which we have followed since the days of Napoleon - to find a balance between canton's self-right to rule and a strong centralized government - cannot be preserved by people like you. Gentlemen! Today you are all dismissed from your representative duties!

For I am here to take care of everything. I consider it to be a duty towards my home country to end the religious strife, to establish a strong central government that still gives room for the cantons to use their own power - however, economic, military and - most especially - religious decisions will become decisions for the federal government.. in other words, for ME!"

Someone started to shout back for Josef Leu. He was brought to jail.

"I am sorry, but I cannot allow this nation to fall under civil war because of religious questions! We have more important issues to decide, like how to end the religious strife, and how to increase our economy", he told the representives.

***

"You really are going to make this nation great!" one of Leu's friends said to him soon after.

"No", he replied. "For I do not intent to rule for long. It is my job to establish Switzerland into the condition that when the right man comes, it will become great."

"Do you know who the right man is?" asked his friend.

"Indeed I do", Josef Leu responded. "Indeed I do."

Siam, which is present day Thailand
is already taken (a few pages ago). :p As for Phuket... what's your source? Everything I checked so far says that its Bangkok.

Interesting story, Finmaster. I assume that Swiss democracy was "suspended"?

@das: On the federal level, yes. But more on the subject on my orders..

@sheep: sorry for claiming that siam was free, I really thought it was :D

Btw:
since the days of Napoleon

Unless we assume that an Italian named Napoleon immigrated to Switzerland and attained a position of power there, that doesn't make much sense (no French revolution, no Napoleonic Wars, Bonapartes are an increasingly-important Italian noble house in this world).

Yes, I was talking about a Corsican-born enterpreuner who moved to Switzerland to sell Italian wines at a local market. He managed to create a trading empire throughout Switzerland, and spend some time in the Congress after getting Swiss citizenship. Otherweise he did not become very well-known, except for the speech he made in the congress once, in which he said that "we must always preserve a balance between the self-rule of the cantons and a strong centralized state".

A wise man he was.

Here is the revised, agreed upon version of the naval treaty, NK. (To be put in Diplomatic Agreements)

Persio-Federate Naval Treaty:

1. In return for the lease of Persia's southern port, the Federated Kingdoms will pay one eco point every seven years to the Holy Islamic Kingdom of Persia.

2. The Federated Kingdoms will send one naval squadron to train the Persian Navy up to Federate standards, for five years.

3. The Federated Kingdoms and the Kingdom of Persia are both allowed free and equal access to the port and it's facilities.

“It has been 14 years since my father has died Uncle, Ministers. I will soon be able to govern the Empire myself.”

Spoken with the voice of a young confident man it was what one would expect from any man of China with any dignity. A handsome young man, what anyone could see in China. But in the Forbidden Palace among the Highest Officials of China it was remarkable. A young determined Emperor backed to the hilt by the top military commanders would normally get his way. But that would only happen after his 18th birthday, not one day before.

“I will go to Europe, the diplomatic niceties have been already observed and I shall go. I shall tour the great cities of Europe, Constantinople, Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon and London. London! The Center of the Greatest Empire in the World! I can’t wait. You can’t stop me Uncle.”

“You will not go. You are Emperor! Outrageous! You are needed here, in China. The voyage will be dangerous you could be harmed, kidnapped or even killed! It’s not Europe, but India and the Ottoman Empire! The Indians could kidnap you and demand that we aid them in a war of independence for your return! Most of them are religious fanatics! The Ottoman Empire are Islamic! That foul barbaric people, they have harems that would put the Ming Dynasty to shame! You will not go!”

The Ministers stood by quietly watching the clash of the giants. The young Emperor and his leading regent his Royal Uncle argued. Most of them were divided on their opinion, but they knew they were out of their league. The ones that did intervene were the Generals supporting the Emperor and asking him to observe the weaponry of the Europeans. The regent gave up throwing his arms in disgust and assenting.

The Emperor would be going to Europe.

“You see this city Ming? A symbol of Qing durability and strength that’s what Guangzhou is. The entrance to China and one of the largest cities in the Empire, it’s unbelievable. We’ll compare all the cities in our travels to Guangzhou agreed?”

The bodyguard said nothing but nodded in assent to the Emperor. He himself was a Manchu from one of the noble clans and was a 4th degree cousin himself. They (along with a hundred hand-picked soldiers) were going to board a steamer to Calcutta then onwards to Agra to see the fabled Taj Mahal of the Mughal Emperors finished 9 years after the complete Qing Conquest of Mainland China.

Calcutta, FK India

The steamer docked in a relatively private harbor surrounded by FK soldiers and a pompous Englishmen with the Chinese Consul waited at the bottom of the ramp. 20 of the Emperor’s bodyguards went down first before the Emperor himself descended. The Englishmen bowed while the Consul kneeled and then introductions were made. Reliable guides introduced, reliable housing fit for an Emperor named and so on. Completely boring with nothing out of the ordinary aside from a huge crowd of Indians (completely normal) all desiring a look at the Emperor of China.

Onward to Agra and the Taj Mahal!

To be continued…

das my source is that one of my best friends is from Thailand and also that I have travelled to Thailand on a regular basis for the last four years.

Sultan Seljaz will prepare for his esteemed Emperor of China's arrival. He shall make sure that Constantinople is the highlight of the Emperor's voyage.

OOC: the story i'm posting is about the Taj Mahal, the next about Egypt, and then Constantinople :p But at this rate i'll never finish.... :(

Agra, FK India

“Your Majesty, in the horizon there is the Taj Mahal. Construction began in 1631 and ended in 1653 on the orders of the Mughul Shah Jahan who ordered it built as a mausoleum for his wife. Also to the west you shall see Agra Fort, which was originally a red sandstone fortress however it was converted by Shah Jahan as a palace and rebuilt extensively with marble and made fit for a Shah. Please forgive the delay to the Taj Mahal, but the weather has not been very cooperative and the streets are wet with water forcing the carriage to go at a slower pace.” The Emperor merely nodded at it and looked outside towards the homes lining the streets.

Outside, off the path cleared for the Emperor the common folk of the city of Agra gathered for a once in a lifetime opportunity. To see the Emperor of China, a tale worthy of telling their children and grandchildren most of them poor, and dirty members of the Poor Class itching for a chance to see life above them, to see the wealth of Monarchs.

Upon approaching the fabled Taj Mahal the Emperor gasped, a noise extremely audible in the quiet carriage. The building was breath taking, the architecture and design completely foreign to the Emperor.

TajMahal.jpg

“As you see Your Majesty, the Taj Mahal was designed by people from throughout the Muslim World. The Khan Ismail of Turkey himself designed the main dome. The construction efforts itself were enormous as over 1000 elephants participated in the construction work with the materials coming from throughout Asia. The white marble is from Rajasthan, jasper from Punjab, jade and crystal from China, turquoise from Tibet, and other various precious stones from India.”

The people within the carriage Chinese Consul of Agra, the native guide, the Emperor, and his personal bodyguard descended from the carriage to see the glory of the Taj Mahal in person. The white marble dome dominated the skyline with the reflecting pool glistening from the light as the 4 walked along the road followed by a distance by the Emperor’s guards.

Reaching the main gateway the young guide began to speak only to be silenced by a raised hand from the Emperor whom leaned closer to inspect the calligraphy and painting on the gateway before proceeding onwards and opening the door and stopping. Beyond the gateway was a beautiful garden lush with plants, trees in full bloom and fountains. The three Chinese sharply in took air observing the marvel of its beauty a testimony to the glory of the Mughal Dynasty.

The Emperor stopped here and turned back: “We will not desecrate the tomb of a person of royal lineage. Come, we are going to Bombay. Consul, arrange for seeds of the plants you see hear to be transported to China to be planted in the gardens in the Forbidden Palace. My dear guide you have been most informative. *Reaches into coat pocket and takes out a wad of British Pounds* Your tip good sir.”

The guide saw the tip and promptly got on his knees. “Thank you Your Majesty, my family shall remember your generosity forever.” The Emperor looked on with disdain and shock his head.

“Where is your dignity? Your pride? Your people have lost their backbone in the pursuit of wealth, may you gain something from this.”

Upon this the Emperor, his guard and the Consul left with the guide following closely.

Their time in India was past, to Egypt and the Ottoman Empire!
