Era 8: The Dentic Era
This era is named after the increase in fangs and jaws that appeared at this time. Though there were other trends, such as the appearance of more advanced gills and circulatory systems in many sea creatures.
New Evolutions:
Winners:
Deathrex did noteably well, mainly thanks to the large populations of its predecessor. As the new genes spread through the population, the new species emerged with greater numbers. The parenting instinct helped this process. Although Deathrexs rivals were technically superior in several areas, it was harder for their populations to establish themselves during this era.
Pincerdid. The combination of comparatively-excellent eyesight and powerful claws meant this species could rarely be defeated by predators. It still had plenty of plants to eat, and even urchins could feature on the menu now (but only if easier food wasnt around).
Yuckius HungusOne of the most efficient plankton eaters, yet a very simple creature. It was very easy for this species to grow and multiply. They were still completely vulnerable if a predator was desperate enough to eat them, but this generally wasnt too much of a problem for the overall population.
Zibbler-21, the evolved from of Dibbler-Revolution, is worth a mention as it won the battle against its rival the Landibblo (whose evolution had stalled). It gained the advantage with its improved stomach, and its fangs for fighting and bullying smaller creatures. Though there was still competition from other land species for the same sorts of food, so this species wasnt exactly thriving either.
Silicoalgae was the first species to colonise the colder coastal areas. With no competition, it soon had huge populations.
Algaceae Dendrorethermis is worth mentioning as it continued to thrive in the cold waters, facing less competition for its habitant than any other water plant.
Endangered Species:
Purple Hunter existed in dangerously low numbers, just like its predecessor the Red Hunter. It was now a more successful hunter, but the problem in this era was the low level of efficiency at flesh eating - really too low to provide enough energy for this complex creature. This resulted in the need to catch more prey than should have been necessary. Other hunters had a similar problem, but it was more severe with the Purple Hunter. In bad times, the Purple Hunters were usually the first to die.
Bublimeon was slowly disappearing as Algaceae Dendrorethermis gradually took over the warm shallows. It mostly survived in isolated areas where conditions suited it best. Though there was no guarantee of long term survival.
Spikester was losing out to the Yuckius Hungus and the Stingjelly.
Ragsting became a fringe species as the Leviathan, its main host, was replaced with the more parasite-resistant Juggernaught.
Vegesuck couldnt match the Pincerdid and was bullied away from all the best grazing spots.
Extinctions:
Red Hunter,
Stalkrex,
Yuckius Primus,
Tentalight,
Threadcap,
Nitros Ventus,
Pre-Finner,
Photodid,
Dibbler-Revolution,
Cephalion,
Not-Quite-as-Primitive Zeeboo,
Leviathan,
Superkiller Scuttlemeister: all replaced by their own evolutions.
The ancient
Slimeotron Deslover species (era 3) was finally squeezed out by the various newer land plants.
Landibblo couldnt find a place on land anymore, mainly thanks to the Zibbler-21.
The ancient
Biter species finally disappeared. Its combination of smelling, fangs and fast swimming couldnt keep it going any longer, in the face of more efficient and faster-breeding plankton eaters.
Zones:
Warm Shallows:
A mix of old and a little new. Diversity and competition remain high
Cold Shallows:
Little has changed. Ancient plant species are still thriving. The predators are not very fearsome here.
Open Ocean:
Still dominated by the Wavys and their descendents. New species take up the same old positions. The deep ocean ecosystem is well established.
Temperate Land:
Plant life is evolving faster than the land animals! All species here seem fairly secure.
Cold Land (New!)
Silicoalgae blooms along the shore when its not too cold.
Bonuses:
Plant award: Leafy Land-Spike.
TerrisH gets +1 gene bonus.
Animal award: Yuckius Hungus.
BananaLee gets +1 gene bonus.
Innovation award: Flying Fin.
marauder68 gets +1 gene bonus.
Survival award: Cryoalgae.
Niklas gets +1 gene bonus.
Story award: Mauritania gets +1 gene bonus.
Genes Appearing in this Era:
Pack Hunting the species will instinctively hunt in a group, cooperating to bring down larger prey, or to round up and trap smaller prey. This does not necessarily extend to sharing food with each other, or protecting the youngsters. This is not necessarily a sign of intelligence either, though brain power would be another bonus here. Obviously, this is only really useful for meat eaters. The higher the level, the more effective the hunting strategy. Low levels are little better than random manoeuvrings (but still better!).
Immune System all species have some kind of immune system, but this will be extra defence against the nasty parasite species. The higher the level, the better the defence - especially if the immune level can match the level of parasite abilities.

Problems:
@ Disenfranchised, I kept swimming for your creature, as there was no alternative transport method (im assuming theres still a animal stage that swims to a new host. Otherwise its getting too small to stay in the radar of this game)
@ Abaddon, I realised you were just reducing water retention and not removing it completely. So I havent changed what you posted. But note that lichen didnt have excessive water retention. All plants will need high levels like that to be able to survive deep inland.
@North King, circulatory system x1 was merged into gills x1. I posted about this earlier... I wont count any circulatory system genes, as this largely depends on all other aspects of the species and you can just assume it exists as needed. There will only be Gills and Lungs to boost metabolism.
@cvlowe, hope youre OK with how im handling Pack Hunting. I dont want any 'gene' to merge into areas covered by others.
