NESLife attempt #3

And was earth after extinction any different? Mammals, birds, insects, fish etc...

Emphatically, yes. The entire dominant force in the ecosystem (dinos) was utterly wiped out. Birds went from puny fliers to massive predators; mammals went from shrews to whales and humans. Niches were utterly destroyed, animals switched functions radically, and this was from the puny Cretaceous Extinction event, which was rather small compared to some.

Right, in this NES the big creatures died like your huge land animal just like dinos did. but There were never any dominant forces in the ecosystems because the number of species we make is small so it will never look like earth's extinction. This last turn was the first turn some animal had 2 species that rule an area kinda... those guys with big noses and their counterparts with hands. It's the first time, and I hope they will evolve in a similar fashion to dinos on earth.

And thats why I see the time that passed as closer to 100-150 millions years of evolution than more than that, since no species ever had time to truly become a master of the world. We just have proto crocs...

All in all thought - I do agree that the last extinction was very small.

As I said at the time, I counted that around 48 species were killed off in the last extinction. Im not sure if that was roughly half the total or even more than that (i need to count them sometime :) ). Though its true that alot of them were hangers-on and NPC's that nobody seemed to notice.

It was bad for some players. Nuclear Kid lost his whole line of complex skeleton meat eaters evolved from Lord_Iggy's Venatoryte. I dont think he's posted anything here since :(

And how many died in the last one? Many new species died in the one before... While in this one no new creature died out :p

Dedicated players will stick around, even if all of their most beloved species are wiped out. I know I would, even if you wiped out the Ghostrex and every Scuterid.

Leafworm
Genes (0): Digging x2 Water Retention x 2 Crawling x 1 Eating Dead Things x1

Evolves To:

Uglybug: RFHolloway
Evolved from: Leafworm
New Genes(3): mass egg laying x1, Jaws x1, wings x1
Gene removed (optional, max 2):
Description: The uglybug had a number of advantages over the more primative leafworm. The ability to lay eggs after feeding gave the newly hatched uglybugs at least a chance that the other material around them had decomposed a little more to provide additional food. If it hadn't the mouthparts were more developed, enabling them to get even the tougher parts from dead things, and the wings although not much use, slowed falls from high places.

I was hoping the generic insects had "water retention x1" as they live on land already, so I could add 3 new ones - If that is not the case, I had better lose the exoskeleton.

Yeah I know, I want to evolve a new family out of them (like I made Finners out of plankton rather than one of the first four animals) but daft said you'll have to give them some feeding and water retention already...

I think it would work much better if you evolved from the Jubblerus family, if you want to get insectoid animals (Jubblers are a lot like OTL Beetles). Frankly, your guy is going to get outcompeted badly by the various scavenging Scuterids which already exist, resulting in an early extinction like so many others (Planktonus, Bubbler-Muncher, Braciola, just to name a few). Also, Daft didn't want to work with very small animals.

I would recommend establishing your own branch of an already existing family, just as a piece of friendly advice. Though ultimately, it's Daft's call. I just feel quite strongly against evolving a whole new animal from 'misc insects' or 'plankton' when one could easily evolve from an already existant species. It makes the game that much more realistic.

New branches off of plankton died off quite often, but generally daft has kept new small species alive an update or two as long as they could practically get their energy supply and someone keeps it updated every couple updates. Usually with the reasoning that they don't provide enough energy for the meat-eaters and don't need so much of their own food source as to need a wide open niche just to get enough food.

Yes, but it's stupid, evolutionarily speaking. And it would be hell to put into evolution charts. So seriously, if he wants it, take a Jubbler and mess around with the genes a bit.

@RFHolloway, welcome to the game!

As mentioned it will be hard for a brand new primitive species to survive, due to the fact that alot of evolution has already happened. It will be especially hard unless the new creature has some kind of unique lifestyle with no compeition, or no threat from predators.

I guess its more tempting to start a fresh line of evolution. But some creatures already in the stats are still quite primitive and could be moulded into whole new things.

Im afriad you don't get any starting 'genes' from the basic insects. Currently the rule is still 3 genes for any new creature or evolution.

Spoiler :
Xiavalion: LittleBoots
Evolved from: Dendravalion
Genes (25): Complex Stomach x1, Flesh Eating x2, Swimming x1, Vibration Sense x2, Eyes x2, Brain Power x1, Skeleton x1, Cartilage x1, Jaws x2, Fangs x1, Communal Behaviour x1, Water Retention x2, Lungs x1, Walking x3, Climbing x2, Parenting Instinct x1, Large Eggs x1
Description: In this harsh new environment, the offspring need all the help they can get; therefore, the parents will care for the young children, reinforcing the communal nature of the animals, until they are able to strike out on their own. Eggs are carried around in the mother after fertilization, but are deposited by the parent in tree nests when they become too large; parents hide the babies in the trees because there are few trees and few creatures that will try to go into the trees.

Phratrevalion: LittleBoots
Evolved from: Xiavalion
Genes (28): Complex Stomach x1, Flesh Eating x2, Swimming x1, Vibration Sense x2, Eyes x2, Brain Power x1, Skeleton x1, Cartilage x1, Jaws x2, Fangs x1, Communal Behaviour x3 (+2), Water Retention x2, Lungs x1, Walking x3, Climbing x2, Parenting Instinct x2 (+1), Large Eggs x1
Description: The every increasing complexity of communities of Xiavalioi gave rise to the Phratrevalion line, a species marked more for its parental instincts and fiercely clannish behavior than any other single characteristic. Still hangs out in trees.

OK found a suitable creature that gives me a bit of a jump start on the design. Is that a bit better?

Looks great to me. Though animals lay eggs by default, you might want to change the gene to 'large eggs' or 'shelled eggs'.

@RFHolloway, as Iggy said things lay soft eggs by default. I will count the egg laying as 'tough eggs' unless you say otherwise.

Also, flight lvl1 is not really flight but more like hop-jump-and-glide. Hope thats OK.

Random Idea:
Since there's often quite a delay between updates... Does anybody want to play a silly game in-between?

Heres the idea: You choose a pet. It can be any type of species from this game, whether its extinct or not.

You have to look after your pet. Feed it, play with it, train it to be stronger, teach it tricks, randomly punish it, heal sickness, clean it etc. BUT you only get two actions per turn, so you have to choose. Each turn I will post a picture to show all the pets and what their moods are. How much food/play it needs will depend on the type of creature, etc. They can attack each other if they get too bored/hungry/psychologically-damaged.

IE, I choose a pet called Mephisto, a Cool Rockster. I 'feed' it and 'play' with it.

This took me a whole 2 minutes:

I understand if people think this is to weird :)

Anyways,

Ive not posted any new pics for a while. So attached is a preview of the latest player species, minus RFHolloway's (was waiting to see if he changed his mind) and any others ive randomly forgotten right now. I need another night to draw the NPC's and probably another night for the update itself.

Decloak: And you wonder why your games feature-creep until they're so bloated you don't want to do them? :p "Oh, yeah, just two minutes more," and then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128...

Well you have a point. But really, the pet thing took about 2 minutes + 1 minute to write about it.

My first NES was a lot more complex, even on the first update, than anything ive done since. I dont even like to think about it anymore.
