NESLife V

Limbed Tambenus/Tambien
Evolved From: Tambenus
Genes Added: Photosynthesis x4, Legs x1
Genes Removed: N/A
Description: The Tambenus had found success in earlier ages through its combination of water retention and being able to survive out of water longer. This new variation found sucess from being able to move. It used primitive legs to move to new mineral sources when old ones went dry, allowing it to thrive for longer and grow larger.

Starting on updating, 24 hours remain for any additional evolutions!

NOTICE:

Species Name: Your Name (this line in BOLD please)
Evolved from: ancestor name
Genes added: (ONLY genes added)
Genes removed: (don't include this line if nothing was removed)
Description: Please have a few words / short paragraph here that sums it up.

The reason I've made a point about this is that when it comes to do doing the stats, I am copying and pasting a lot of things into google docs. Perhaps because I'm using Chrome, it copies all formatting, everything including text colour from the forum page. With the number of evolutions I'm handling (this turn looks like alot again) it really helps if things like bold text and player names are already in the right place!

As for posting the genes you add, please just post the genes you add. I am always going to check through the genes as a matter of course, and to make sure you haven't accidentally added or removed too much. If you post your own version of the updated gene list, I can't simply copy it. Instead I have to then work backwards to see what has been added or removed... You are also assuming that I will have no issues with what you are adding, and the names for new abilities you introduce. Again, its a real pain if too many people are doing that.

If you can take time to think of an evolution, I'm sure you can take time to post in a moderator-friendly format. Those who have committed violations, you know who you are! Unless you are not reading this and don't care ;)

It does take me quite a lot of time, not only to draw each species and format the stats, but also working out how all the species are going to interact so I can compose an update I'm happy with... I know I traditionally advertise NESLife as a low-commitment NES for players, but if people are just being lazy/random with evolutions, I may just miss them out in future. You have been warned!!!

I think further clarifications and stuff are due with the next update...

REPLIES:

Just a question, we've seen that Shells/Skin do provide a certain amount of Water Retention-if not very effective. Exactly how effective are they? And how effective would an organism without EITHER, and pure WR, do?

^ Well, dedicated Water Resistance adaptation is always best. I'd say things like Shells and Tough Skin are equal to maybe 0.3 to 0.5 levels of Water Resistance if you want to quantify it like that. They help as an auxiliary...?

Karka: Cannae
Cold-adapted parasitic Algaeform
Swarming
Evolved from: Atjja
Genes: Parasitism 1x, Sonar x1

@Cannae, just a heads up, but again I have an issue - Sonar seems a bit much. I am going to substitute Vibration Sense which seems to accomplish what you want. Sonar may be considered a high level of vibration sense?

Shade Chaser: filli_noctus
Evolved from: Petrosa Sparguntur
Genes added: Swimming x1, Sight x1, Cold resistance x1
Genes removed: Holdfast
Specialisation changed: Digestion (no specialisation)

@filli_noctus, I don't know where you got the idea from but I don't think its important to shadow algae in order to find plankton (and honestly, floating algae is not that dense anywhere except sheltered inland lakes where it can build up). The way I am considering it, plankton levels will depend much more on general nutrient levels / oxygen levels in the water. I don't want to start fiddling with everyone's evolutions, but I'm thinking of substituting sight for smell sense here (chemical sense).

I assume we all have "basic X0.5" senses for most things.

^ Yes, I would say more like x0.25, but still very basic senses do exist - inherited from microbial stage.

Slippius :
Evolved From : Creeposilvaetus
Genes Added: Gap Junctions ; Photosynthesis (*3)

@bonefang, aside from you ignoring the evolution template (:p) I am going to treat 'Gap Junctions' as 'Symbiosis' between individuals. This is something more general that we have already established in some species.

Every time it's come up the answer has been no.

^ Yeah, I am (currently) not happy with the idea of gaining an extra gene by removing a related one. Talking about crawling to swimming here, but what else would it apply to? Too many arguments to sift through each turn if this was implemented, I fear.

BTW, if it seems like I am ignoring Iggy's contributions, its because we are regularly exchanging messages on skype / facebook :) (if anyone wants to get in touch that way just let me know - I already have quite a few NESers on facebook).

I had been thinking plankton and algae were interchangeable during the initial write-up for reasons unknown. I changed the digestive specialisation once I realised how bloody stupid that was but I missed the reference in the text. That has now been changed to organic. The idea is that they detect the shadows created by large algal blooms and follow them, catching and consuming the organic detritus that drops out.

And Daft, if you don't want to change peoples evolutions, don't. :p Let them succeed or fail on their own merits.

@Iggy, you're probably right, I just feel a bit harsh after making people wait ages for updates, and then the first feedback is that their species died at birth :s

@filli_noctus well I've not helped the confusion, we do still have single-celled 'algae' floating around (ancestors of Neofloatus). I will keep the eyes in there, having just read this on wikipedia:

Certain species of jellyfish, such as the Box jellyfish, have been revealed to be more advanced than their counterparts. The Box jellyfish has 24 eyes, two of which are capable of seeing color, and four parallel brains[clarification needed] that act in competition, supposedly making it one of the only creatures to have a 360 degree view of its environment.[17] It is suggested that the two eyes that contain cornea and retina are attached to a central nervous system which enables the four brains to process images. It is unknown how this works, as the creature has a unique central nervous system.[2][18]

The eyes are suspended on stalks with heavy crystals on one end, acting like a gyroscope to orient the eyes skyward. They look upward to navigate from roots in mangrove swamps to the open lagoon and back, watching for the mangrove canopy, where they feed.[2]

Yeah vibration sense will work. Also shouldn't all forms of algae get a slime trait or something like that? I thought algae was slimy to begin with.

Nyet, I found it too awkward at the cellular level. Maybe if I had a biology degree it could work...

PS all, apologies again for the apparent lack of update/progress... Aside from Minecraft and simple procrastination, I am now actually getting a digital freelancing thing going, and have been working on actual work stuff. ETA on the update is somewhere next week, before the next weekend.

I'm still saying you could charge for the update :p

Anyway, I'll wait even an year for this :D It's THAT amazing.

I think I was supposed to have updated by now. Apologies once again...

To be honest, I have hardly started updating. But on the upside I have more career prospects and stuff on the horizon. The upside for myself personally, that is!

Its going to be slow going, but don't worry about me abandoning this. I have a good feeling about it and I like the way its gone so far.

Not too slow

Not helping, Quisani.

I've told you the situation - I've not abandoned this. So you just have to wait until I update and I can't tell you when that is going to be. Its nice to know you care, but posts like this don't speed the process and probably just annoy other people who subscribed to this thread.

Real Life also exists.

If you've something to discuss please go ahead, but no nagging posts please!

Aighto. When I wrote it, it sounded more wry than naggy in my head, so if it does sound like I'm nagging, I apologize. I mostly I was seeking to know if you were still continuing or if you stopped for RL reasons and simply forgot to let us know. In retrospect, I should have sent you a PM, and again, I apologize.

Still not helping :D No need to apologise, please just spare a thought for everyone who has this thread on subscribe!
