Senate Bill S 510 Food Safety Modernization Act vote imminent: Would outlaw gardening and saving seeds

Senate Bill 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, has been called "the most dangerous bill in the history of the United States of America." It would grant the U.S. government new authority over the public's right to grow, trade and transport any foods. This would give Big brother the power to regulate the tomato plants in your backyard. It would grant them the power to arrest and imprison people selling cucumbers at farmer's markets. It would criminalize the transporting of organic produce if you don't comply with the authoritarian rules of the federal government.

I've never heard of this before, and it's written in quite an alarmist fashion.

But is there really something to this??

(Yes, I have not done any further reading on this myself. I'm on my way out, but thought it could be interesting to get some reactions to it...)

Edit: Okay, so I just jumped to conclusions without checking any facts. Nothing to see here.

I looked up the bill on several U.S. government sites. Couldnt find much on it.

There is something to it. Namely that nutritional choices have a great deal of effects on health. Take out those choices, and..

Off-topic is turning into a Reddit or Drudge Report for conspiracies.

No, it's scare-mongering from the alternative/organic industry which doesn't want its products regulated. There's no sensible reason the US would want you to stop growing your own food produce.

Happens to the best of us :) .

They should match each claim with a line of text from the bill.

When's the last time the U.S. government did something sensible?

This is why you should build an underground farm lit by torches......

:dubious: ......errrrr, sorry. Forgot I'm not in Minecraft any more. :D

Anyway, I have a disagreement with the thread title: how does one control the food supply? More specifically, how does one enforce the laws controlling the food supply? Usually with guns. Gun control is still pretty central here.

Haha, yes. I just thought it was stupid that many people in the US are very vocal about protecting their guns, but that they'd forgotten to protect their food... :p

The thread titles can only be so long, and regardless, the entire story is a no-issue. :)

it may not seem sensible until you factor in the corporate lobbyists who would profit quite a bit from a food monopoly

They have no reason to worry. When you have the one (guns) getting the other (food) is a simple matter.

Unless all the wildlife is dead because everything got polluted.

No problem. Break into the Seed Bank thingy in Antarctica. Which, of course, requires guns. :D There's a wide variety of plants that grow just fine in polluted soil. If it's a problem with radioactive contamination, be careful which plants you grow--some species absorb a lot more radioactive crap from the soil than others. I forget most of the specifics, but I think lettuce is one of the worst ones.

Do you think I could get a link to this? I'd very much like to see that.

Let me guess. Your definition of sensible rules out covert plans to sterilize and reduce the population, and make profits over selling terminator seeds.
:mischief:
