I'm pretty sure that Nice didn't fall under French control until way later than 900. I could be wrong though, but I was under the impression that France gained control of this fighting the House of Savoy and/or muddling around with Italian reunification. My European history is really rusty.

@Lightfang-Completely acceptable.

@Icekommander-If you wouldn't mind, please don't start in Nice. Also, an answer to your third question which I just now noticed... Yes... Your house can move from one place to another over time.

Example:

House of Savag gets pwnt, but the younger son escapes. There's nothing in the rules that doesn't bar him from options. He could serve another lordship, another king for that matter. He could start a band of mercenaries (Rules doesn't bar a noble family from doing this). Eventually, he may prove himself worthy of a new lordship granted by a new overlord.

Another example would be a crusade, in which the lord sells off his estate, and heads off never expecting to return to his homeland.

NWAG, you're invited if you really wanna. Your join and wage war on turn 1 style will get you destroyed extremely quickly in this NES, however.

I've decided to join this, but I'm not completely sure about what the comment means. Are you saying that waging war would provoke a coalition against me, or that it wouldn't be economically viable?

Either way, I'll try to play more sensibly this time.

In addition to your lord, you will have the members of your house. On your template will be a list of your lord's immediate family (Wife and kids). Everyone will age 1 year on February. When a kid reaches age 15, you must write a story on the education of the kid, so that his stats are influenced. Otherwise everything will be completely random. Do not worry about writing a story for your girl. You and I both know they don't matter (In the medieval days anyways )

It's a different situation in the South girls can inherit and rule, which they did. It's also not strict primogeniture, girls almost always inherit something, unless specifically barred from doing so by the parents. They can also own property, sell it and buy their own.

I also highly reccomend that people take the time to read up on French languages of the period, bugger all people spoke 'French' except in the North. Occitània was the dominant language of the South, the Bretons spoke Breton, Catalan in the far south near the Pyrenees and varieties of German elsewhere (to mention but a few). Nice wasn't French either :p

Extremely loyal to Lord Henry during the turbulent years of France's political shifts and wars. Excellent commander especially when it concerned the infantry. He is considered by his foot troops, a father figure. Every battle he fought in with his Lord was always a battle his troops knew they will get out of alive and stronger than they were when they entered. Still considered the greatest commander in France, possibly even Europe... this man has no match when it came to infantry vs infantry match ups.
Sir Thomas Lorraire/42(L/C/N/I/P)(Salary)
Great Politician and trader, this man single handily funded the growth and expansion of Dijon from small village to crowded city. Now while it does not rival that of Paris or other fine cities, it is enough to administer a vast territory and keep a flourishing trade at the same time should it be needed. This man is considered an expert when it comes to matters of coin. His political mindset though causes some worry among his peers, Lord Henry knows Sir Thomas has the throne of France in mind and continuously monitors his actions to keep his reigned in.

Located between Lyons and Paris, Dijon lays on top a profitable trade route. Dijon is also the ruling seat of the county of Burgogne thus increasing the power and prestige of the city. But it also sits on a precarious position with the Holy Roman Empire watching it with greedy eyes. (this is odd tidbits I got from the internet... not wiki. The HRE has fought France for control of the Burgundy region, but never taking Dijon, though sometimes most of the county.)

Biography of Henry the Dashing, Lord of Burgundy:

Henry prides himself in being extremely knowledgeable in warfare, but his true command talent lies in his cavalry force, his knights are extremely loyal and know that when Henry is on the field they will win. Henry feels right at home on the battlefield and thinks there should be more wars and is always devastated when the wars end. While he does not mind administering a city or even a region, it is not his strong suit, which is fortunate that he found a good friend in Sir Thomas. Henry loves the sea, and always learns what he can about naval tactics, unfortunately he lives nowhere near the sea and that there is not many books on naval warfare. Henry loves to read and plans to build a personal library in his home, he considers himself very intelligent even the professors at the local university are awed by his seemingly endless intelligence in many subjects, again only politics seems to be a troublesome point for him.

Updated Courtiers story for point alottment. A story of my family will come soon. Edited into this.

Anyone who has put values on their courtiers are not doing themselves a service. I do believe I said to write a description of what you'd like your courtier to be like. Not to simply put values on their stats. I am the guy who gets to decide on the stats. Another thing to note, the higher a courtier's stats, the higher pay he will demand. It would be nice to have some change after salaries are paid in the very begining, would it not? If I start with 1 lvl 10 city, but 1 courtier costs 5 bucks a year, and the other costs 8 bucks a year, that leaves me with 7 bucks a year to spend!

Also, Brittany isn't a part of France (Rennes is a city in Brittany.)

We don't have a Poitiers, Nantes, or Brugge, to name a few of the lordships that we could have before we begin. There's still PLENTY of lordships that could be claimed by players, if there were inerest. Stay away from alsace-lorraine, and anything east of Marseille, though.

Nous ne l'avons pas.

Bernard, sometimes known as 'La Costaud' (The Stout), is a man who prides himself on his constancy and steady rule, in both war and peace. In his youth he was a great warrior, though today his preference is to remain in and govern from his city of Lyon.

Jean-Claude d'Angueil is a knight from a minor noble house who has risen quickly through his close loyalty to the Marchots. He is a tactical thinker and clever commander, largely taking over direct control of military matters since Bernard's marriage, and prefers life outside of the court.

Guillaume La Fontaine is a minor nobleman from a merchant family, and works to manage much of the goings-on with the many traders who come to this city. He is good at what he does, but Bernard keeps a close and not entirely trusting eye upon him.

Theriault[Adrogans]
Head of Household: Hervé Theriault/28
Hervé Theriault grew up along the border with Brittany and has seen his share of conflict. His father tried to defend Nantes in 843 but it was unsuccessful. After many years of rebuilding the Nantes has almost become its former self or possibly greater. As such he has been taught politics to balance the French and Breton population in Nantes to avoid issues, and is also experienced in small scale conflicts due to border skirmishes. Replacing his father after his recent death it is time for Hervé Theriault to take hold of his family.

Cities are not limited to only one Noble family.

By the way, I think that female children should have stats as well- not all systems are exclusively patrilineal at this point, and they can still have significant influence.

I agree Iggy which is why I put a daughter into my family.

Due to demand. Women can now have stats. When your daughter becomes 15, you can give me a description of her schooling, too, and I'll give her stats.

There can be more than 1 lord per city, but only 1 lord will be the master of the city, and thus gain it's income... Unless a deal is struck or something between 2 lords, where one is granted a section of the city as a fief or something.

After doing research, Marseille has been barred. Marseille isn't supposed to be a part of France for a little while. The person who wanted Marseille is now going to be in Nimes in stead.

Iggy, a good spot for you if you'd like to own your own fief is Narbona or Poitiers, or something.

Well, I'd very much like to start of in Lyons, but if you request it, I'll move to Poitiers.

@ Amon - Can I get an answer to this?

Nantes:Lvl

*was destroyed in 843, according to wiki was not rebuilt until 946 but you listed it and I was wondering if we can just say it was rebuilt much more quickly.
