I would have thought rubber was more obvious for Indonesia. My memory's failing - wasn't rubber part of a previous Civilization incarnation?
I feel like Batik for Indonesia really hasn't caught on. Any reason why?
I think it's because every resource up to this point is something your Civ can farm from the ground or sea. The only manufactured resources come from city-states so it's too outside-the-box for many to imagine batik, even though it's a very realistic possibility

If that were the reason, there wouldn't be nearly so many people hyperventilating with excitement over the thought that it's Glass.
I've suggested it multiple times, but it was always overshadowed by rubber and "Java", glass caught on fairly quickly by the Italy/Venice supporters.
So I just wondered if there was anyone against it or something. After a year of Bahasa classes Batik just really quickly came to my mind when I thought of the civ linked resource (thank you ASEAN), but everyone else seemed so resistant...
Is there any compelling reason why it should be batik? Never mind for the moment that it would be unique to Indonesia; a lot of manufactured goods could be unique to somebody. But thinking about building an Indonesian civ from the ground up, with all the different ways it could be done, is there anything special about batik that would make them think it would be awesome to build Indonesia in such a way as to make use of this resource which wasn't already present?
I just went back in this thread to see the resistance. It's strange: In the very same string of pages people are dismissing batik for being too specialized while welcoming glass
Also, stumbled upon the funniest resource idea one of the first few pages: Komodo dragons for Indonesia![]()
Batik seems plausible, but it would seem like an odd choice to me. All the resources so far - even the CS-specific ones - have been generic to some extent. Even glass, which would clearly be linked with Venice, is still kind of generic. At the very least "glass" in and of itself isn't unique to Venice, it's just that Venice has got the best of it. Batik is just plain and simple unique.
Unlike what some think, I don't think the resource has to be that unique. It doesn't need to give away the civ in 2 seconds. They just said it'd give away the civ. That could mean that it's somewhat related but most people would make a connection if they think about it for a minute. It could just mean that they didn't want us to narrow down the possibilities. It could mean a lot of things. It doesn't mean it has to be so specific like Belgian fries or Vietnamese Pho or something like that.
It would be a good example of Indonesia's culture and batik is one of most famous things to come out of Indonesia.
