New Expansion Speculation Thread

If Laurier is leader for Canada, I wonder if there will be an immigration/emigration mechanic? That was what he was most known for from the history classes I remember.

Exceedingly boring choice if they did go with Laurier. His only real claim to fame was being a sensible leader who made good decisions and governed with above average competence.

Macdonald was a drunk who built a railroad, so a great tie in with a railroad mechanism.

Pearson was a diplomacy wonk instrumental in the creation of the U.N. and pretty much came up with the idea of U.N. peacemakers to defuse global hotspots. Natural tie in to a world congress mechanism and emergencies.

MacKenzie King was a nut job who communed with his dead mother. His dead mother was a great political advisor, as he governed longer and won more elections than any other Prime Minister. Maybe he gets a fortune telling ability that ties in with a climate change mechanism.

My personal choice, though, would be Champlain, emphasizing the age of exploration and giving Canada a chance to expand quickly and end up with a large, spread out civilization. Maybe a loyalty bonus for being far away from other Canadian cities instead of being close together.

If Canada is in there should be only one option for the UU...

Courier de bois, I hope, a unique Scout with faster movement along rivers, who adds a Trading Post in every city he uncovers.

Mountie Fort would be a good unique improvement, replacing the regular fort, giving loyaty bonus and gold bonus for trade in nearby cities.

Kristina killed Peter the Great... what are you talking about? Also, when I originally googled her I wasn't sure if I found the right link and when I got into wikipedia and saw the portrait I was like: "Oh wait, yup that's her". I really like how well Firaxis captures likenesses.

But also, I previously thought Carolus Rex was more highly regarded than you make him seem. Something of a Colonel Kurtz-type genius that had an immortality legend surrounding him during his campaigns. Didn't he revolutionize military organization and tactics to some extent as well, maybe pioneering pike and shot formations? Too bad to hear about neo nazis idolizing him, I wasn't aware of that. It would have been interesting to see what Europe would have been like if Sweden became a super power. Kind of like if Harold Godwinson had won at Hastings as well, haha.

I was more interested in how he tried to apply guilt by association retroactively to someone.

I think a replacement for mech infantry would be nice for Canada. Perhaps a Peacekeeper unit. The civ ability might be something to do with strategic resources seeing as that appears to be one of the focuses.
These are fine suggestions, but I might suggest the Canadian Corps for the UU. These were the troops that that won the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and they're commonly recognized as having been one of the more effective Allied military formations in WW1

I was under the impression that a Mountie was more of a police/detective than an actual fighting calvaryman.

You are correct, the RCMP are federal law enforcement but I can only think of them being a replacement cav unit if they do use it. The Canadian army well known around the world for having top notch artillery (WW1 sticks out), tank crews, and infantry. WW1 and WW2 the Canadian army was widely recognized as one of the best trained armies in the world so I would suspect a unit based around that time period.

Civ IV had emigration/immigration right? It was possible to steal citizens from another city via cultural pressure?

I could see similar being added as a way to make tourism matter besides the CV.

Edit: Stealing population from a city would also help directly to flip it via loyalty pressure.

Ice Hockey Arena replacing Stadium would be my guess, though it would be super late.
They are a late game Civ however.
America and Japan both have late UBs so that could certainly work.

If Phoenicia are in, I would love them to have a UI/UB that generates Tyrian purple as a unique luxury. That would be really nice.

A good choice... but too much like the Australian UU... two commonwealth nations with fairly similar UUs is a bit off, in my opinion. Unless they are a rifleman replacement.

If the climate change/disaster system do wind up being a doomsday mechanic, I think the lack of Mayans strikes me as a huge missed opportunity.

I'm not sold entirely on Canada either, but there is as much reason for Gran Columbia to be a Civ as the Lone Star Republic led by Sam Houston (which, after reading out loud, might be pretty cool jkjk)
As a Texan that's always in the back of my mind.

America and Japan both have late UBs so that could certainly work.
It would come in the Atomic Era which would definitely make it the latest unique building however.

Well well all already know what the two UUs for Canada will REALLY be

I'm kind of disappointed if this IS true (not because it was leaked, I succumbed to that pressure on my own and I have no one else to blame for looking :-P) but that we don't get either Portugal or the Mayans. I enjoy most of the choices if they are true, but...we have all other former colonial overlords of the modern nations except Portugal and it's ridiculous. Mayans not being here also saddens me.

They are my choice for a unique Commercial Hub district, definitely. (them or Ottomans, but Ottomans have other options than the stereotypical Bazaar)

Yeah this. Mayans are a slam dunk choice for an ability which interacts with natural disasters (ie: knowing in advance WHEN and WHERE disasters are going to happen), weird that Firaxis seemingly passed up on this.

Then again, the only *truly* confirmed leaders so far are Kapu/Eleanor/Kristina. The rest are still unconfirmed unless pictorial evidence proves otherwise.
